Lots of people have been having trouble with the mesmer boss in Ascalon Catacombs from what I’ve been reading.

Supposedly we’re supposed to separate the couple using the stones, but even with a team of level 80s, that didn’t work out in practice.

So after killing the other bosses, we tried to revise our strategy to find out what we were doing wrong, and we noticed a door connecting from the necromancer room to the mesmer room which you can close/open with a switch.

So this time we tried pulling the female boss into the door-room and closing the door before the male could come in, and to our surprise, the strategy worked! We were able to kill her with ease!

However, we also noticed if we pulled her too far, she would teleport back to her original location! This leads me to believe this door-strategy is unintended (Odd considering the setup of the dungeon?)

Considering how difficult the Mesmer boss couple is, I think ANET should promote this strategy because it’s the logical thing to do in a concept intended on separating them.

This is also the FIRST dungeon, so simplifying things to the likes of this rather than complicating it with the stoning-method might be more welcoming to newer players.

I really think the door-method is also a more fun way of fighting them. I hope this is promoted instead of changed.

Yeah, you are leashing one of them but not the other.

Probably a bug, but then again, since you figured it out, I’d mark that down as a win.

I sincerely hope the bug is the teleport if she is pulled too far into the door-room.

This boss is impossible without the door-trick. I’ve only done it once before using the stoning-method.

Are we talking about the couple boss on story mode? if so i’ve never had to kill them by the door or stone method.

The stone method works, you just need for someone to pretty much be the designated stone thrower, and also for that person to have a modicum of intelligence so that they don’t throw the stones in the wrong direction. At some point they will teleport back together, you just need to stay calm and let the stone thrower do his job and maybe help out a bit, since one they’re standing right next to each other you need to make sure that you don’t knock them too close to each other constantly.

the door method was done in a review before release.
They teleport to eachother within the room.

Generally i hae been using a strategy where one person keep the attention of one of them and kites them away. Thats pretty easy really.

I was taking her away and the rest kill him but i like taking him away. when they teleport to each other that makes it hard.
Anybody know what causes that? once they are together i use rocks to try and get them apart.

im thinking a hammer fighter could do something similar.

A Thief is really useful because they can use steal and get something to fear them apart. Unfortunately, some of the Thief CC abilities don’t work, but the steal is one that has consistently worked.

This is how I have done it, I play thief so I would steal go in and fear and then have someone kite the other away.

When one of them reaches ~50% health, and then again when one is about to die, they teleport to the centre of the room. You should hear the dying one say something similar to “Come to me, my love”

We have run this dungeon a number of times in our guild. We found the best way to do it was to drag them towards the 2 separate platforms. Then have 1 person on the man (usually someone with knockdowns and stuns) whilst the other 4 take out the Mesmer. This has worked well and we have been able to get through the last couple of attempts with very few players entering a downed state at any point.

The lovers in AC story really aren’t terribly difficult. We usually use a combo of boulders and running away when you have aggro to get them to break up (pun intended.) Especially late in the fight there tend to be a million boulders lying around.

Is your method an exploit? Maybe. I call it clever use of the dungeon to overcome a problem that shouldn’t be a problem in the first place.

One of the early beta videos posted about dungeons used this exact strategy. They separated them by the door with the switch.

When I did this, my group wiped quite a few times on these two. Finally, we were able to beat it when I (Warrior) held aggro on the Mesmer and I just continued to run in circles around one of the coffins in the main room. The Mesmer kept losing LOS on me so most of her casting abilities missed as I would run around. My group then proceeded to burn down the guy on the other side of the room. Kind of a cheap strategy but after we wiped 4 or 5 times on them, we were relieved to beat it.

I remember one time we killed them they wouldn’t move from rocks due to a bug. They eventually stood directly on top of each other and made the fight 10X easier. Each rock instead of hitting one hit both. Two of us kept both couples perma knocked down since they were inside each other 0_o.

/shrug.

You can easily kill them by having two people of your team constantly throw rocks at both bosses. They can barely even do anything when done properly.

This is true. Boulders are the best control option for them; they are a man’s best friend.

EDIT: Also having all 5 members continuously pelting one after the other is dead is hilarious.
