Ascalonian Catacombs is too hard now I think
Deadly Legends [DDLG] – Stormbluff Isle
Watch out I have been debating this all day and anyone that thinks it’s to hard is a nub or you should “enjoy other aspects of the game since your not skilled enough”. I feel your pain I had that happen earlier. What was in your group? Professions, glass cannons, and that type of stuff? Did you take out statues first? Did you avoid circles of death on the floor? Did you avoid her web spray? Maybe we can figure out what went wrong.
It’s easiest if you just have everyone either go ranged or stay behind her and watch out for the circles. The entire fight is simply not getting caught by her web scream thing and being caught in a circle.

My guild just took 4 lvl 80’s and a lvl 63 into AC explorer path 1 and could not get past the Champion Spider (mostly because of the little spiders)…after running this dungeon many, many times. Wait, before you say we’re built wrong…we’re all accomplished in PVE (with 100% world completion, daily farming in Orr, and able to hold our own in WvW).
IMO, it has become way too hard since the latest patch on February 26th. I feel that this game is becoming too frustrating. Since there are other options in the MMO world, I’m thinking of branching out and trying others because of this. Is anyone else feeling as frustrated as I am?
Few things:
100% World completion means you know how to walk around until things on your map light up. This is not indicative of performance.
Daily Farming in Orr is usually accomplished with large groups of people. This is also not indicative of performance of 5-man groups.
WvW is usually accomplished with large numbers as well. Again, not indicative.
If you are having issues with the Spider Queen (who I believe is one above Champion in monster grade, I think), consider pulling the small spiders up onto the stairs and then jumping via the shortcut on the wall back down, forcing longer pathing and allowing you to whittle them down.
Oh, and one more thing. If you want to check out a group of level 35s (hopefully) clearing it, look in the other thread with the Stream link and hopefully we’ll be able to show how to complete it at the minimum level.
I dont want to hear that people need to change players or that your just not good enough to run the AC. That is hog wash. I have run that place over a hundred times and it was hard enough before with all level 80’s in exotic gear. It upsets me when I hear people say you need to be better. IT IS NOT for level 80’s in exotic gear, it is for level 35s in 35 gear. So when I go in after the last patch with my level 80 buddies and we can not finish it or we glitch out after battling for hours you have to realize that there patch was terrible. I know for one I do not wish to waste my time in there until they fix it. A game is supose to be challenging yet fun and enjoyable, it is not supposed to make you angry and depressed. When you get past the spider [if you do] you might as well forget Kohler just run past because you cant fight him anymore. So after trying six times you may decide to run past but then the hatchlings have been increased 100% and they have 4 times the health and half the time they are invulerable. After 2 hours you give up and say you will never come back cause really……what is the point. If arenanet wants you not to play there game they are sure doing a good job of driving us away.

Either that, or they’re trying to raise the standard for players who are actually able to complete the dungeons. The fact of the matter is, there will be people who are good enough, and there will be people who aren’t. Dungeons aren’t for everyone. They are, like you said, supposed to be a challenge, not only for you, but for the myriad of other players that play this game. Thus, your definition of what might be “incredibly frustrating and difficult” might be a cakewalk to others. Perhaps your bar is just set differently from Arenanet’s.
I disagree that this particular boss is too hard. I had a group with a couple of 35s and the rest 80s. At least two people in the group had no idea how to do the boss, but we still managed to beat it on the first try.
What I do think is a problem though is that people claim “We need an elementalist for part 3”. Maybe it is possible to complete without one although it is difficult, but the main problem is already that people think an elementalist is needed. No dungeon should rely on a single class.
I’m just wondering why they would choose the first dungeon of all to make ultra hard.. rather than keep that fairly easy and then crank up the difficulty for the last high level dungeons instead? :o

Yeah, well that’s your problem. There shouldn’t really be any mini-spiders around when you fight the Champion. They should only last maybe 30 seconds into the fight before you focus them down and start hitting the boss.
Plus they don’t even hit that hard. I run that on my glass cannon Ranger and they have itty bitty venom spits. Stark contrast to any schmub in SE hitting me for 2k.

Ughh they changed the mini spiders… They pack a punch in numbers now…
After arguing on both sides in the past I can tell you each sides point of view and arguement. From the people that like the new AC.
1.You crave a challenge and more content in the game. You have most likely leveled and geared more than one character and your wanting more to do in the game.
2.It flat out keeps things fresh and brings back the learning experince.
People that don’t like the new change
1.Farmers have to go to CoF p1 now. Which I was fine with that because I never farmed AC.
2.People are scared they are going to do this to all dungeons and make it a nightmare to grind for the armour set/skin that they want.
3. People are worried this will kill the dungeon/make it an elitist nightmare (which btw it is already showing signs of doing.) Not even half the people that were running it pre patch are running it now. And I looked on Gw2lfg earlier and requirements for nearly every single AC ad on there was be experinced and be lvl 80 no newbs/whipes/or going down repeatably or kick. Elitism…
4.Increase time to complete the dungeon thus making it longer to level, reduced reward (actually you could run old ac paths in half the time you can now),and the frustration that goes along with pugging.
5. Worried it will scare new players off from this content. If you have horrible experinces in the first dungeon what do you think a new player is gonna feel about higher leveled dungeons???
Anet I belive said ( don’t shoot me if I am wrong) but they were trying to inspire people to go out and explore the world more. Thus trying to kill AC farmers/grinders. And if that is the case we should see a big CoF buff in the near future.
I wish a dev would listen to me when I say this and get there opinion on it… BUT why can’t there be an Elite Explorable Mode??? Increasing difficulty and reward for running the elite but leaving the regular explore mode alone for people to grow in and experince it in a more calm matter without the risk of getting facerolled every 5 secs plus no elitism and a casual player could easily slowly grind toward the armour they want. It would make both sides happy and offer another UNIQUE challenge to the game. I think I am actually going to post this as another topic.

Curious to know if you’ve run the dungeon since the latest patch on Feb 26th?
We ran it last night. The mini-spiders that launch at the start of the Champion Spider fight have been significantly enhanced. They are much tougher to burn down. We wiped several times last night. This happened to a group that has run this dungeon in explorer mode (all paths) about 75 times over the past several months. We got so good at this dungeon that we were able to run all 3 paths (not speed runs) in about 1 1/2 hours. We often would 3-man it (which I grant you probably indicates that it was too easy, but, now, I can’t get through the first part and it’s quite frustrating. I was using this dungeon to farm gold and level up. Now, I won’t bother to even run it. In fact, if they do this to all of the dungeons, you can bet I’ll find a different game to play.
For those that say we need to get better, I understand you are probably expert gamers and are far superior to me in GW2 gameplay, but, this is the first dungeon (a starter dungeon – if you will) which would imply that this dungeon is the easiest. However, IMO Citadel of Flames path 1 is now waaaay easier – and just as lucrative.
Also, – consider this – many of the people in my guild don’t have time to play for hours on end – much less spend all of their time on 1 path of the starter dungeon. They would prefer to do a variety of things (Farm, Fight dragons, kill ppl in WvW, etc.) and if they get stuck for several hours wiping multiple times in a dungeon – well they just won’t bother. It begins costing too much to run the dungeon and a lot of us would prefer to make gold, not lose it.
If this is how A-net wants to expose new people to dungeons when they get to level 35, then, I think they are mistaken. IMO, they should nerf this dungeon and beef up some of the later dungeons. Then, they will get more casual gamers interested. As it stands, they’re just turning off the casual gamers (which I can assure you make up the vast majority of us). That can’t be good for the long-term survival of this franchise.

Step 1) Kill Gargoyles First.
Step 2) Kill all the little spiders first
Step 3) Attack the Champ
If step 2 is too hard for you then:
1) Have lots of condition removals
2) Have things that reflect range attacks
3) Don’t stand in Champ Spider AOE.

Hey, add me in-game. I’d be happy to help both of you guys out.
I prefer enjoyable game experiences, not exercises in frustration with random people on the internet.
ANet believes in running a game like it’s a circus and the players are the circus animals jumping through a never ending series of hoops to play.
The dungeons are just more of the same in that regard.
i got to say: as a lvl 63 eng at my time i ran ac story mode(yeah, kinda late i know…) and with 4 other lvl 80s we ran it. it was my first dungeon, and it was amazing how every ascalonian ghost at the start took us 5 minutes to defeat… maybe were not as good, but we were all pretty awsome doing a mass of combos-but still-5 minutes!
Having never run AC exp till today, I was always told it was relatively easy. I’m not too experienced in the ways of dungeons, but, having run the story mode 3 times, I felt it was time to move on. So my lvl 80 eng, 2 lvl 80 thieves, a lvl 80 mes, and my brother’s lvl 42 warrior decided to try path 3. We never made past the Spider Queen. Me and the mesmer went for the statues and the Spider Queen spawned right on top of us. I was down in 5 sec. followed shortly thereafter by the rest of the party. Though we tried several times, either the Spider Queen or her hatchlings would drop us fast, though we dodged and such. Mention was made of reflect and condition removal but I couldn’t pop my elixirs fast enough. I’m now guessing dungeons are meant for only hardcore lvl 80 warriors/guardians with full exotics who have spent years doing this type of thing.
My brother used AC to lvl up his warrior and said it was easy. But then came the Feb. 26 update. For reference, the first time I was in a group for CoF path 1, we couldn’t dps the boss fast enough and had trouble with the switch room. The second time, me and 4 other 80s couldn’t get past the Slave Driver. I consider myself to be a casual gamer so maybe my skill isn’t enough but it is quite off-putting for me to run dungeons now.

Even AC story is tougher. They need to bump it’s “required” level up to 40 or so.

Aiming an important part of the game soley at elite players is a really dumb move. You’d think Anet would know better.

If you’ll actually take a look at the video, you’ll see that we actually had pretty relaxed form through the entire dungeon. There is nothing “1337” required to run AC Ex. In fact, the entire time we were joking about how we were “MVP” because half the time we didn’t know what any of our skills did. We ran the dungeon in that video with fresh lvl 35 alts that we really didn’t know how to play extensively, and only had theoretical knowledge of.
If you think the spiders are hard, wait until you get to ghost eater in path 2. Crazy frustrating.
Dunno about Ghost since the npc bugged the third time I tried a while ago. We had a lvl 80 eng, ranger, 2 warrior, and lvl 59 ele for that run, and it worked for the spiders this time. Went well until the npc bugged actually.

I don’t understand why everyone has sooooooo much trouble with the spider/spiders. I can usually take them all out by myself dying only 0-2 times.
I have a video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmkhyONc7m8
First of all this was done in one take so there are some fails/destroying of burrow that I decided not to omit. Also go to 5 minutes in for spider solo.
Wethospu (hope I got his name right) has posted a much better melee solo of the spiders which you can also check it as its a much better example but I don’t have the link.
Edit: Here is a link to a thread where some help with the spider was posted incase anyone is interested.

If you think the spiders are hard, wait until you get to ghost eater in path 2. Crazy frustrating.
I found that one to be easier than the spiders :/
Not hard. Just not any fun. Just look at the bosses: Spider now spams annoying and overly long AoEs for the sake of making him “hard” but killing any chance of trying to melee him, Kholer’s ads are harder than Kholer himself, Howling King spams the most frustrating mechanic of a condition known as confusion that ruins any fun that could be had because it becomes a war of attrition than an actual boss fight, the Ghost Eater is nothing short of frustrating due to having way over-toned damage that takes you by surprise due to a mechanic that pretty much says “DON’T FOCUS ON THE BOSS” to the point where it’s a convienence when his AI freezes twice a fight and you have to CC him to fix him, and how Colossus Rumblus was changed from Howling King 2.0 to Grenth 3.0 and now relies on an NPC that was likely programmed by an intern.
I’ve soloed it, so no it’s not that hard.

If you’re talking about issues with the Spider Queen, I believe there are certain mobs that you kill that will trigger more and more spider spawns. You’ll notice that the spiders are a mix of low-level and high-level ones that take different amounts of damage. I BELIEVE killing all the low-level ones will trigger additional spider spawns, but don’t quote me on that.
Just when I was starting to be a dungeoneer, gathering tokens for my first dg set, the whole place is a lot more difficult now.
Why monsters in dungeons have to hit so hard? These were supposed to be trash mobs.
Also, the frequency that conditions are applied on you makes me think that condition removal its irrelevant.
No…I wasnt running a glass cannon. I was a guardian with +30 in vitalit and P/V/T exotic armor. Still.. I felt like was wearing toilet paper.
Made 3 runs with pugs this wekend. Once we made till that part when you have to protect the NPC, and failed for 4 or 5 times, when half the group ragequit. Two runs ended by the Spider Queen..the new poison its just..insane.
This was frustrating to say the least.
I mean…this is supposed to be the first dungeon..why does have to be so hard?

You don’t need lots of conditions removals or tanky gear, when you can dodge or simply sidestep. I run with Berserker gear and was still able to solo the Spider Queen, as you can see in the video I posted above.
Simple…. Only three scenarios I can think of that makes it possible to fail with lv 80 party.
1. You don’t follow known steps, heads, little, champ
2. Your vit is lower than 16k going in, that number is a guess because my glass cannon ranger doesn’t even get 1 shot in that dungeon.
3. And the one I truly believe, you don’t dodge. The poison is the only thing you have to worry about. If it kills you you didn’t dodge, if it kills you multiple times you new to learn to dodge.
It is solo by many people, I’m in no way an elitist and had to solo it with what seems to be the least loved class.
While I am nowhere near a top notch player; I am probably better than the average. I find these new AC Ex even easier. I do not run with a group, but pug 99% of my dungeon runs.
It comes down to two things:
1) Knowing your class
2) Knowing the encounters
Here is what I’ll say about the Spider Queen:
1) Don’t rush
2) Know how / when more little spiders will drop
The room is divided into two parts. First is the main floor and the second is the raised half where the two large Gargoyle heads hand. Do NOT go up the stairs. Clear the room out first and leave the little spiders on the stairs. This will give you plenty of time to clear out the heads (avoid hitting any more little spiders). Once a few on the raised platform die a wave of little ones will drop. Avoid being near the stairs and clear out the main floor. By then, then Queen should drop. Clear out the little ones and then her.
Don’t be afraid to change your utilities. You don’t have to run the uber dps ones at all times. On my thief I like to use:
1) Hide in Shadows (heal + condition removal)
2) Signet of Agility (cures conditions on me AND nearby allies)
3) Smoke Screen (reflects the poison spit)\
My guardian is a shout build, so pure of voice completely negates most of the junk in that room.

Man, all these threads about people being too lazy to get better. The people who post these kind of threads need to stop thinking “we’re good players, we should be able to beat everything” and start thinking “if we can’t do this, we need to re-work our strategy, practice, and play better”. Yes, not everyone has the time to learn or learns at a much slower rate, but I guarantee in a few months time, most of these threads about AC being too hard will be a thing of the past once pugs learn how to do them with blindfolds on.
Messing around with the spider queen in my small 3man family guild we found that almost all of the spiderlings will pull all the way back to the first graveling mound. All the way back to the repair anvil actually. The queen will not pull even close to that far so most of the spiderlings can be killed (aoe poisons ect burns them down quick) without her interference. Someone needs to pull them though and has to be good at running back up the stairs past the flame throwers without dying. Then burn down the
Flame turrets till it is only her. We three managed to get her to 25% health and I do think we could get good enough to kill her after some more practice. But my kids got bored tired of wiping! And wanted to do something else so that was that. Something I zwanted to try cheesing was getting the event ghosts from below the stairs to fight the queen. But I doubt that even if they would fight that either of them would pull far enough.

Yep. I remember after a few weeks after release, people were saying the old AC was “too hard” and/or “impossible”. Then a few months later, after people had taken the time to learn the mechanics, it became “too easy”. Aside from the bugs, I think most of the problems seem to be a teamwork problem and/or lack of experience with the new mechanics. Some PuGs will prefer 80s because it probably makes them feel more confident in the teams abilities, given that they have no idea who they will pick up. You’re grouping with strangers, so you either put some restrictions to put your mind at ease, or you can be patient and try to work together regardless of who or what is available for the challenge.
Part of the reasons that these dungeons get popular is that people spread word of how to beat the mechanics and others try it out. I never thought Arah would be a regular dungeon for my static team, but we’re running it in under an hour for two paths (usually 2-3 hours per path) thanks to weeks of practice and Strife’s video tutorials on youtube. The old AC paths used to take groups 40 minutes or so until people spread word about faster strategies.
Most of these complaints, I believe, are just initial shock reactions because the new AC is still unfamiliar to most (the bugs are very discouraging, though). I’m not going to throw labels around, but I’ll just say… maybe if given enough time, people will realize AC isn’t so bad.
OK first of all IMO I think the difficulty of AC has for sure increased, that being said there are some that I agree with about learning how to replay it again. There has been alot of conversation about the spider queen and I believe that it is because most have not been able to get past it. In reality there are several more bosses in there that have increased in difficulty also. When I began to play AC it was my first dungeon as a green horn [this is my very first online game so I am really a nub] but I always was able to run AC on pug all the way through, now it is a huge frustrating effort that I choose not to partake in. I appriciate some of the advise in here but honestly if I have to go watch videos to learn how to play a game, it is not going to happen. I dont have that much time guys, come on some of us actually work. In the two hours that it takes to play the silly thing [which by the way I loose half of in armor repair] I can make in world play. I think my plan is going to be to wait a couple months and then run it on pug when every one else has figured out how to play it. ofcoure there is the chance that they will change all the other dungeons and everyone else will quit playing the game. :O(
Meanwhile, a rag-tag team of drunks recruited from guildchat cleared the “new” in AC 2.5 omnombars when it came out.
Stop being bad.
i do not think the AC paths were tested with lvl 35, no TS/vent etc. and all stuff in blue/green
THEN you can tell me it is ok
Blue/greens without jewelry, because open world is easy enough.
Two things:
1. It’s been done.
2. TS/vent is not necessary to complete any of the content.
Also, MF exotics and level 15 bling is more than enough to complete the most demanding content in the game (Simin back when 4-1 was pretty much necessary).

Here’s your testing with lvl 35s.
I’ve had 20 min Arah runs, 2 hour Arah runs, 7-10 min AC runs but also AC runs that we never finished. Partly all with the same people. What does that tell us? Sometimes we suck and even if dungeons in this game are mostly doable brainafk it is not recommended to try so (brainafk).
