Attitude About Dungeons
Couldn’t agree more. I love dungeons and think they have a ton of potential, they just need some attention. Dungeons could be as interesting as the new content, but they need some upgrades to make them more challenging, which would take work (but far less than designing content from scratch).
I also desperately want new dungeons. Raids will be fun, but I want 5-person instanced content that takes place on the world map (and is hence more relevant to the current day lore). I’m not exactly going to be able to find 10 people to play super challenging content with every night. Each campaign should have at least one new dungeon (or more) along with a new Raid.
Is it really that difficult to assign a few people to do a review and update of dungeon and boss mechanics so they can be engaging and rewarding content options for leveling and end-game characters?
They did this for AC, then disbanded the team and laid off Robert Hrouda back in 2013.
Dungeons were hyped pretty hard leading to launch. At the bottom of these forums you can find a link to https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/dungeons/ with such gems as
“Dungeons are huge, private adventure areas that only teams of high-level players dare explore. The risks are immense but the rewards are great for those who brave the hazards of the dungeons of Tyria.”
and
“There are tremendous risks for those who brave the dungeons in Guild Wars 2, but the rewards are great—each dungeon has its own unique armors and weapons that can’t be found anywhere else. The armor from the Ascalonian Catacombs is different from what you’ll find in Sorrow’s Embrace, which is different from the treasure found in Caudecus’s Manor.”
It’s hilarious because nowadays the best way to get the dungeon armor and weapons is not by running the actual dungeons, but by doing PvP. But it’s not like there are exclusive ascended trinkets locked behind those dungeon skins…oh wait.
The way they can just abandon content like this is shameful. I seem to recall, but could be mistaken, that one of the reasons why the level cap is 80 and will remain 80 is so that content doesn’t get abandoned.

- Dungeons!!
- Fractals!! Dungeon team disbanded.
- Raids!! Fractals get the dungeon treatment. Dungeons “disincentivised.”
Those who think raids are going to solve all of Anet’s instanced content problems are going to weep when they see this pattern continue:
4. Super duper raids!! Raids get the fractal treatment. Fractals “disincentivised.” Dungeons deleted.

That’s what I’m kind of thinking at this point as well.
And, yes, expecting us to passively accept the abandonment of content, especially when it’s almost the entirety of 5 man experience in the game, is very, very preposterous.
Someone at Arenanet has, from day one, consistently made bafflingly poor management decisions, and almost the entirety of the game’s struggles can be put on that person. Things like a year’s worth of temporary development creating a massive content vacuum that the game will never recover from, turning outfits that people paid for to customize their look into lame one-pieces and tonics, going months without balance patches, and now this dungeon thing are complete head-scratchers. I can’t imagine any other AAA MMO pulling these kinds of stunts, and I play a lot of them.
