Hey guys, sorry for a kinda vague post, but some friends and I a recently returning to GW2 after having not played since around 2 months after launch. We have no idea what the current state of PvE is, but we are interested in doing dungeons (and potentially WvW at some point). We never got much of a feel for whether certain comps were better than others and what not, but I wanted to see if you guys could recommend some good setups or general strategies that would help us hit the ground running. I’ll probably be returning to my Engineer (which I have NO idea what is currently good with, I recall grenades were good in PvE as I left) and one of my friends will probably be picking his Necro back up as well, not sure what else we’ll have from there. Any advice you guys can provide would be extremely helpful and save me a TON of reading… Only two of us really did instances at all last time around and we we’re not terribly “efficient” at it, so some general team strategy would help immensely. Thank you so much for any help that you can provide guys!

Welcome back.

Hard to sum it all up in a post. Especially w/o knowing what dungeons you have access to as strategies can vary to some degree depending upon which path you’re looking to attempt.

When you get your group together, and if you’re on a NA server, send a whisper and can provide a walk through of some of the dungeons.

Guardians emerged to be preferred team members of PUG groups as they are pretty decent in keeping an average group alive. However you’ll find that most dungeons are much easier with DPS so most people opt for a full DPS with a skilled group or DPS + 1 guardian for a generic group.
Unless you want to finish a dungeon at record time, necro and eng are both great and fun to play with. Stay away from turret build in eng though, that one still is quite weak in dungeons. I haven’t seen necros run minion builds in dungeons either, while it’s fun to do so in open world.

Sweet, thanks! Guardians were already seeming to be pretty preferred when I was around back in the day, so I guess not too much has changed there. The thing that always interested me was that it seemed like if you played things correctly, pretty much any class combo could clear dungeons together just because of how the game is played if the team executes well. Glad to see that seems to be the case still =)

The most efficient team setups generally only include warrior, mesmer and guardian. But that’s for very efficient speed clearing.

You can still be very fast and efficient with any setup as long as you have high dps. I personally prefer my entire team in zerker (rampager if are condition build). A tanky guardian can sometimes help when the pressure is really on, but it’s really only needed for 40+ fractals imo. As long as everyone knows their class well and plays smart, any high dps group will breeze through the regular dungeons if at least one person knows the dungeon. I recommend everyone visit the profession subsections of this forum and find solid dungeon dps builds. I know people like to say “cookie cutter”, but there is a reason why certain build rise to the top, they’re just better. You can still conform most builds to fit you better.

I also recommend taking Mourningcry up on his offer. If you truly want efficiency, running with a pro who is patient and can show you the mechanics of each section will set you on the right path. Feel free to add me as well. I like running with new dungeoners who want to learn efficiency, it means pug dungeons will be that much better in the future.

Don’t expect to be speed clearing instantly. When I did my first few dungeons i was like “OMG SO HARD Y SO MUCH DETH!?!”. Now I have more tokens than I can spend.

Good advice, thanks. We may take you guys up on that offer at some point, initially we’ll probably read some guides and try to figure things out on our own. Not that GW2 is very similar to things like WoW, but we are at least proficient at functioning as a unit from things like that and I am interested in really experiencing these dungeons and figuring them out adds alot of intrigue for me. Thanks again for your offer (which we may take you up on) and advice!!!
