Beginners guide to dungeons?
I’ve played a lot of GW2, but have never run a dungeon. I’d like to, but I can’t find a good guide to dungeons in general. Plenty of guides to specific dungeons, but I want answers to questions like
1) Which dungeons should I do first to get a feeling for what they’re like without dying too frequently?Ascalonion Catacombs and Citidel Of Flame are the easiest
2) Does there exist a list of dungeons that shows difficulty, average completion time, minimum level, etc?
No but im sure people would type that out for you (im lazy)
3) How do I actually find a pug for a dungeon I want to run?
gw2lfg.com
4) Is there some type of protocol for introducing yourself to a pug, such as specifying dungeon experience, describing my build, etc?
usually peopls say “sup”. Alternatively you can post your class/gear in gw2lfg.com
5) Do most pugs coordinate their actions, such as calling targets, intelligently using combos, etc, or is it mostly just “do what you think is right”.
“do what you think is right”
6) Is any profession OK for any dungeon, or are there some dungeons that are significantly more difficult for certain professions?
eh. as a general rule don’t be a squishy melee.
Anything else you think I should know?
Not really, just post in gw2lfg, join a party and follow the other people’s leads. You’ll be a pro after a couple runs.
Thanks.
you’re welcome (maybe, not sure if i helped)
1. You should have gotten emails as you were leving up that told you when you could start doing Dungeons.. My recommendation is to start with Story Modes. Going in the proper level order because if you do that, they kinda tell a cohesive story
Ascalonian Catacombs (30)
Caudecus’s Manor (40)
Twilight Arbor (50)
Sorrow’s Embrace (60)
Citadel of Flame (70)
Honor of the Waves (76)
Crucible of Eternity (78)
The Ruined City of Arah (80)
2) I don’t know about “difficulty, average completion time” but http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dungeons will at least till you minimum recommended level, and location to all of them.
3) Stand around in LA reading Map chat, or visit www.gw2lfg.com
4) Not usually
5) Depends on your class.. your expected to know what abilities you have that are very helpful in specific situations, and if you don’t know, ask.
6) Any Profession is OK, but some like Guardian and Mesmer are Highly sought after because they are useful in many situations
The above is my opinion, and personal experience, and will likely be contradicted by every post that comes after it..

rangers right now aren’t a good class in pve, they need several mechanics buffed, so they are actually able to compete with the other classes in dungeons(ranger is lacking support with the only support coming from the spirit of stone and the water combo field; ranger is lacking dps or needs to go full condition which has the problem, that the conditions still need to tick off, while other skills do the damage instantly; ranger can go melee, but bugged skill 1 on 1hsword also sucks)
so all in all i’d say, just don’t play a ranger in addition to the stuff posted above
The only thing I’d disagree with in the above suggestions is #4. Always announce you are new to the dungeon when running it for the first time. It’s not just a courtesy, but it could save your backside. If you get a boot right off (happens rarely), it’s better than having it happen halfway through after you’ve wasted time and probably silver for repairs, and kitten off a bunch of people with your rookie mistakes.
Otherwise, find a guild. Seriously. Find some folks who won’t mind holding your hand through those initial learning runs. It’s always better than PUGing, especially for the inexperienced. There’s a guild forum you can go to which always has a ton of active recruitment threads. You should try that.

I strongly disagree here. Rangers are one of the strongest classes in general PvE. In dungeons they are a bit weaker, but a good ranger is still a very good boon in dungeons. High maneuverability and good condition stacking with a pet that can be useful in most instances.
As for utility, they have Healing Spring which is a heal, regen, condition removal, and a water field. There is also Signet of Renewal which can remove all conditions from all party members.
Many complain of Pet AI, and I do as well, but that does not mean the pet is entirely useless in dungeons. You do need to set the pet to passive and manually tell it what to attack and you will still find the pet useless in some instances such as boss fights. But the pet is far from useless.
Rangers are a strong class. Maybe not as strong as warrior (but what is), but still a strong class.
Main: Caeimhe – Sylvari Ranger
Alts: Charr Guardian, Asura Elementalist, Human Thief, Norn Necromancer
