Hi im a relativley new player started in November. I have a guardian that is lvl40, and I just reached the first dungeon in my story. My questions are:

After i finish my story dungeon would it be a good idea to start farming the exp part?

If not what is the best time/level to farm exp dungeons(not just AC)?

And what is the best type of gear to have to farm these dungeons at said time/level?

Thank you for your time!

Typically people farm dungeons for tokens (for exotic gear and weapons), and for the monies. AC, CoF, and Fractals tend to be the ones ran for monies. Most of the other dungeons are only run for tokens.

You will get the best success by running dungeon explorables at level 80 in good gear, but some dungeons (AC especially) can easily be run at the recommended levels (which is 5 levels higher than the story mode).

Just about any hour you can find one person or another running dungeons. If you can’t find a group in LA or on the map the dungeons is located in, I might recommend you try GW2LFG.

The best type of gear you can run is the gear most suited to your build. Specific gear is not required for any dungeon. Just run what is best for the skills and class you have.

Some advice:

1) I suggest your first explorable dungeon be Ascalonian Catacombs (lvl 35.)
2) Gear wise, I would recomend you look into at least a masterwork (green) set that is the dungeon level or higher, a rare (yellow) set if you can manage it.
3) Let people know that you’re new to the dungeon, listen to advice, ask questions, and learn.

Explorable dungeons are meant to be challenging, and can hit you pretty hard at first if un-prepared. Arm yourself with knowledge, the wiki is a good place to start, but talking to your team will help a great deal.

If you do dungeons frequently as you level, then by the time you hit level 80, you will have enough tokens built up to buy a few pieces of exotic armor and some exotic weapons, without giving up your hard earned gold, so it’s definately worth doing.

How often you farm / repeat a specific dungeon depends on if you like the look / stats of the gear from that dungeon. A one handed weapon is 300 tokens (60 tokens per path completed), so running all 3 paths of a dungeon twice will get you a level 80 exotic one handed weapon with some left over. Armor pieces vary from 180 tokens for exotic armor to 330, depending on the piece. Off hands are 210 (focus, shield), and 2 handed weapons are 390.

The most important reason to run a dungeon though is that you have fun with the dungeon. Don’t put yourself on a dungeon grind fest treadmill that makes you hate the sight of the dungeon walls, or cringe when you see a dungeon mentioned in /map chat Have fun, and GL!

Best time is 80. Any other time you’d basically need to be carried by your team.

You can maybe get by with lower level if you know exactly what you are doing but that requires you to have done those dungeons before and since you are new the best thing to do is wait until you are 80 and have your skill build complete.

Not saying it’s impossible or anything it’s just to save you and your teammates some grief.

Best time is 80, yes, but I don’t believe that sub-80s always get carried. I have run a sub 80 chara many times in AC and sometimes it felt as if I was carrying more weight than some of the 80s. What truly matters is not the gear or the level (within reason, of course), but the players skill and familiarity. The idea of ‘you must be 80 to explorable’ is a bit elitist and misleading. You don’t. You just need to know what you are doing.

Did you even bother to read my post past the first sentence?

I stated explicitly that low levels can get by if they knew what they were doing but the OP stated he was NEW.

You can gain the requisite experience in only a run or two if you are a decently skilled player. And you can find plenty of friendly groups that will not mind provided you let them know you are new to the dungeon. Some people (like myself and my guild) will actually take a bit of extra time to explain encounters.

I don’t mean to be a killjoy but i know from experience levelling my alts that as soon as you enter a party with a Char that is less that lvl 80 you will get a swift kick.

Unfortunately this is the state of the game with way too many ‘Eliteists’ running around – best thing about these eliteists is that the only aspect of the game they are good at is skipping mobs and completing a dungeon quickly.

Your mileage may vary. One of my last PUG runs of TA was with one other person at level 80, two in the mid 60s and one who had just dinged 55 to do the explorable. I was the only one in the group who had done the dungeon before.

I will not call it the fastest run I’ve ever had, far from it, it took 90+ minutes for Forward / Up, but…. the group succeeded, everyone got tokens, and the new guys learned a great deal over the course of the run.

My advice to anyone who is new to dungeons, be up front that you are both new, and not level 80 when looking for a group, ask if people are willing to help you learn, and then get down to the business of doing dungeons as often as you want.

Avoid teams that say “LF_X_More, Fast Run / Speed Run / Money Run….” etc, as these are usually farming teams that want to optimize the run. Use gw2lfg.com and post that you are ‘new to dungeon, willing to learn.’

Believe it or not, I’ve actually seen people say “LF_x_More, be experienced or willing to learn”

It may take a little longer to find a group, I’ll give you that, when you’re lvl 80 and fully geared, you can jump in most groups and people don’t blink too much or ask too many questions. But if you keep your eyes and ears, and most importantly your mind open, you’ll do fine.
