I’m coming back from about a 5-6 month hiatus and I was gearing up with ascended knights because I was mostly tanking during raids. I’m trying to get back into it and i’m now wondering is tanking on a guard still a thing, or shd I be going zerks?

(I almost exclusively play my guard btw).

Sure, but pugs have a fetish for chrono tanks.

meaning 90+% of the time, they’ll want the tank to be a chrono. just because that’s how everyone else does it. even though a guardian tank would probably be better for most groups

Well every Class can tank but most Groups prefer Chronotanks because the Chrono DPS itself is kitten and you aren’t sacrificing any DPS by making the Chrono a Tank.

Still, its possible for every Class to Tank some have to sacrifice more DPS than other but it will still be enough for the Group to kill every Boss with a Toughness Tank.

This isn’t actually true. A zerker chrono can do up to 12k dps (while providing buffs). And it’s not like a tank guardian or necro or thief suddenly drops to 5k dps just because they added a little toughness and defense. They can still do high damage.

And on that note, I wouldn’t use full knight’s to tank (or any knight’s at all, opting instead for crusader or cavalier for my toughness). You should aim for 1500 toughness. No one else should have more than that.

Guardian can tank the same things it could in the past (VG, gors) without a problem. In wing 2 none of the fights have a set tank. In wing 3 it isn’t impossible but there is a strong incentive to have a druid tank against both KC and Xera.

I rarely do pug groups so I haven’t seen this chronotank fetish, but this is my experience. Personally I like to have a guardian or chrono (or 2nd druid if you have one) tank for VG and a druid tank for everything else.

I hear what you guys are saying, and thanks for the replies.

Before I left though, I had been working a full knights set (my 1st ascended set). Is that basically useless now, or at least definitely not the best option? or is there anyway I can swap the stats on it for a minor loss?

Ascended crafting is something foreign to me. Only got to 500 armorsmithing because I wanted to raid.

In essence you’re spending 10 spirit shards, 5 ectos, and the cost of whatever exotic level insignia/inscription you want for the new stat type.

You lose your runes though, and your agony infusions if you don’t pull those out first (24s for the thing that pulls that out, the rune puller thingamajig is overpriced and pointless though).

Everyclass can tank, most do it well, issue with it us chrono tank is prefered fir many reasons. N no not just becuz of everyone else is doing it.
Main reason is you need 100percent quickness and alacrity. Mesmer dps us one of the lowest thou. So if you have to bring a chrono you make him or her tank. So you dont sacrifice another dps slot. Thou with the mirrior make up you can take 2 chron98s so all 10 people get perma alacrity. But yes groups also been making eles tank due too you not sacrifice a dps slot or haveing to drop chrono. Healtank has it’s giod uses issue is healing as a tank most others dont get heals on most bosses as much as they would if the just a healer

Ascended armor is not particularly important, especially if you are only using it to tank. If I were you I would make an ascended zerker armor set for general raid use. Then for tanking you can just get a couple of knight’s rings from fotm and a knights amulet for laurels + wvw tokens (or just laurels if you hate wvw that much). This will put you at 1409 toughness which should be enough for any situation. You can buy more knight’s trinkets in case your druid is a full clerics clown but the accessories and backpack are more expensive and it’s pretty typical for druids to be able to manipulate their toughness anyway. For emergencies you can get some bowls of tropical mousse, which I believe is the cheapest 100 toughness food (it costs ~20s/hr and the next cheapest is ~70s/hr).

My guard is a mix of Zerk and Maurader armour and Cavalier trinkets. However, I have not used her to tank since like February. I have my chrono and necro geared up for that and like it a lot more. Chrono is also preferred because of the sheer amount of Dodge/evade/absorb/block/invuln’s they have.

Although, I have been itching to give my cleric rings and commanders earrings/amulet to my ele so she can be an auramancer healer and tank and pump out fury, regen, and others. But we have not gotten to the point where we get to play like that yet in my static group.

So, sure, you can prolly tank with your guard if you run into a Zerk chrono but if the chrono has commanders gear, you would have to go with Zerk or a diff class. Just as I only use my necro tank when we have a Zerk chrono during our training raids. Especially as it also makes it easier on the healer.

Daenerys Ceridwen – Druid && Vexia Gracen – Chronomancer

To my knowledge, yeah. I have certainly not seen anything else. But I do not pug enough for that.
