Cannot wear two of the same rings from fotm?
So here i was overjoyed to finally get my second Red Ring of Death. To my surprise it did not let me equip my second one; i laughed and tried again thinking i misclicked or something, but turns out to be true, you cannot wear two of the same type. I was quite upset because i gave no in game warning or anything. Now my question is why? why is this a thing? you can wear two orca rings of the same type and two pearl rings of the same type but why can’t we equip two of the same rings from fotm? because i wasted my relics cause of this. Refund my relics or add a in game warning to warn future people or something..
sigh Red Ring of Death clearly comes with a “unique” warning and there is an exact alternative to Red Ring of Death. The Crystalline Band – which has the exact same stats as Red Ring of Death but a defensive infusion slot as opposed to a offensive one. I don’t know why the devs made it like this but that’s how it is. Just save-up relics for a The Crystalline Band – problem solved!
Also, according to wiki, "You can’t equip two identical ascended rings, but you can equip the “normal” version of the ring and its “Infused” version at the same time". So get one our your Red Rings of Death infused and you can wear two!

The rings are labeled as “unique” on their tooltip. Maybe it’s just me but that was a pretty clear indicator that I wouldn’t be able to double up on them.
If you open a ticket and you’re more polite than you were in your post here (understandable given your frustration, but still…), they might actually refund your relics. Just explain that it was an accidental purchase.
What kind of “warning” is that? i just thought its unique cause its ascended and has a unique name…to the average joe like me that “unique” does not say much. Man thats just agh……ten days down the drain…what am i suppose to do with my second ring? sell it to a vender..listen anet, i love you, but that…sigh…so upset :\..

Umm… am I missing something or isn’t “unique” a pretty standard MMORPG (and non-mmo RPG) terminology used by pretty much everybody. Just how much information do you want them to squeeze into that tiny tool tip?
Also, didn’t you browse the vendor? Didn’t you notice that there was a ring just below the Red Ring of Death with the exact same stats? That should have been a pretty big clue that maybe you should at least ask someone before buying a second Red Ring of Death.
I mean, I feel your pain, but I can’t fault Anet here.
This is my first time playing a mmorpg…and was not aware of the “standard” meaning of “unique”…and those two rings are quite different, one is defense and other is offense; being a pure offense, defense is the last thing i want on my items. Just saying before you buy should be a tiny toggleble warning.
Here’s a copy-n-paste of my situation about the whole “Unique” situation from a similar thread:
The term “Unique” would be kind of confusing for those who have never played other MMO’s before, or those who came from GW1 in which Unique had a different definition. In GW1, Unique was an actual rarity like how in GW2 we have Exotics, Rares, Masterworks, and so on.
In GW2, Unique is like how it is in other MMOs which you only can equip one of that same name (eg. You can’t equip two Red Ring of Deaths; but you can equip 1 Red Ring of Death and 1 Crystalline Band, both have the same stats but different infusion slot). Though I don’t think one would know fully of the definition of Unique if GW2 is that player’s first MMO.
Sure one could use Google to figure it out, but having the player to rely heavily on Google on playing the game (unless core designs are specifically designed for the player to use Google) is just bad design.
A simple suggestion for ArenaNet would be to put a notice that would appear before before purchasing any Ascended rings stating that the rings are Unique as well as the in-game definition (meaning: not relying on Google or the /wiki command) of the term to better educate players in making logical purchasing decisions. After the warning has been displayed, then it would be up to the player to either cancel the purchase so that they can purchase a different ring, or continue to purchase the ring for other purposes.

Thank you Ari, good answer. But i just got my answer from Anet, was worth a try to ticket it.

what did they say?
“it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun, rather than having fun”
Guild missions say otherwise.
I’d assume they said what they usually say in these situations: “we do not have a way to refund incorrectly obtained items.”
Which is also what they said in connection to an item which is actually bugged, so the mistake wasn’t even on the player’s side.

Lesson learned. Everyone has to learn the terminology, usually at a price.
I understand that it’s annoying but we all have to learn the rules of the games we play. Take chess as an example. When I capture en passent, or castle, sometimes the player opposite to me has no idea what I’m doing. I will explain and teach him, but I will not take back my move.

Yeah, I don’t play other MMOs so I had no idea about the ‘unique’ terminology either. Luckily I heard about it before purchasing identical rings. But I do agree with a lot of people, just putting ‘Unique’ on the item doesn’t mean a lot to me.
You can ‘infuse’ one of the red rings of death and then equip both. One ‘Red Ring of Death’ and one ‘Red Ring of Death (Infused)’.
The funniest with the “Unique” terminology is that it shows up on various bags and has absolutely no effect there.
The fact that “Unique” that matters shows up first on ascended items is a very very very late place to teach it’s meaning to players the hard way. It probably had no usability problems in the original Ascended rings design since you could only get them through pure stupidity RNG.
Another point showing that those pink items are badly though out and a rush job.

Doh! Yeah I found this out the hard way too when I finally saved up for a second Ancient Karka Shell Earring. The last MMORPG I played was EQ and these items were labled “LORE”. Also not very descriptive but after playing for a while eventually everyone learned what it meant. Just not very helpful for new players.
