CoF path 2 - kiting bit
There isn’t anything that needs fixing. You are meant to kite that part of the dungeon, that is it’s unique mechanic. You even said so yourself.
It’s been 4 months since the game launched and yet we are still forced to kite/graveyard zerg the kite-event.
And that segment can be done by killing the mobs. Granted the party need to have good dps to pull that off effectively but I have done so in PUGs before.
Honestly this makes me quite angry when I think about it.
CoF path 1 and 2 are by far the most popular dungeons to farm in game. They are literally done by hundreds of people every hour.
It’s been 4 months since the game launched and yet we are still forced to kite/graveyard zerg the kite-event during CoF path 2 because ANet can get their act together and balance the event properly.
It would probably take a capable designer 15 minutes to sort out something that is causing hundreds of in-game deaths every hour. kitten like this should have been the top priority after launch but here we are, 4 months in and still kiting these stupidly overpowered mobs in circles.
I have never experienced and MMO company that has been so slow and/or reluctant to fix/balance content that a large portion of their player base consumed every day.
They can be dps’s down if you focus target npc’s in a certain order per mob spawn but have to dps them quick.
But as far as fixing and balancing content every dungeon has been basically ignored since the launch of fractals, almost every evening running any given dungeon they seem to be getting more and more buggy, some even to the point of not being able to be completed, I even had nights recently where we spent more time bug reporting than actually playing. Really hoping the big Jan/Feb updates fix all of this.
It is very well possible to just kill the mobs right now, even with a weak composition you can kill up to 70ish% and then kite without dying at all.
It’s not that hard, I see less and less people kiting it. I’ve probably done it 30+ times doing CoF 1-1-1-2 money runs in the past month and have not kited it once with various dps group comps and never failed.

You can kill or kite. If you kill the smokelord that spawns in the first wave, you can partytank/kite with no deaths even if you don’t get to kill everything.

you can easily just kill them >> who says its a kite event.
its-a-defend-him-while-he-places-his-bomb-event,
but as everyone here says its hard
not really, but it requires a diff approuch then the rest of the dungeon
As many have said already, the ranged mobs need to be chopped down ASAP. Done this many times already but only with a proper DPS group.
Usually I can’t kill all the mobs. But by FF on smokelord, you can start to kite much later, like 7X%.

Are you having a giggle here mate? Nobody is “forcing” you to use stupid pug workarounds. Honestly I’m sick of this mindset of any time something in the kitten endgame, where everyone is level 80 and fully geared, finds a section remotely difficult then it’s time to go and complain on the forums about it or find some silly exploit.
Anyway, I’ve never met a pug that I couldn’t guide through killing in the defense event (Provided they didn’t have MF armour or were 5 sig babbies) so I’ll try and help you here.
Potentially the most important part is the opening moves, because if you don’t kill the three starting flame legion really quickly, then they will start to add up and you will fail through simply being overwhelmed. Now, the most important target while killing is the godforged smokelords. These are priority one. You must burn them down as fast as you can every time you see them. There is one that spawns with the initial three, and one that spawns roughly 2 minutes in near the end. With the initial spawn, you should take the moment of calm before the storm to create a fire field and use as many blast finishers into it as you possibly can within reason. You should then have a fair few stacks of might making the first battle quite quick/easy, but to be sure, you want to try some control/manipulation on the initial wave to ensure you don’t mess up. If you have a guardian, get him to use Binding Blade to bring all three together to DPS them with ease. If you have a Necromancer, before the fight tell him to switch one of his utility skills to the well that blinds on each pulse, and use it on the smokelord – most of his attacks will be nullified, making him no more difficult than a regular enemy. A thief can do the same thing with pistol/sword or general thievery. If anybody has control effects that they can use, use it on the smokelord wherever possible. After that the only creeps that spawn are ones that are not as much of a trouble, but it’s still not time to rest on your laurel because they do some large damage. This is more of an attrition fight than a straight up DPS fest, so you need people giving out buffs , heals, and condition removal wherever possible – water field into blast finisher is an extremely underrated heal which will really help you. When the next smokelord spawns, repeat what you did on the first one and then it’s just easy creeps from there on out.
The other flame legion type that people may have trouble with is the flamethrower (godforged flamelord?) creeps. They have a lot of sustained damage but they move slow and are predictable, and if you interrupt them they don’t start attacking for a while longer. All in all it’s Smokelord>stick together, buff allies, take down other creeps>smokelord>win.
Honestly I will be extremely disappointed if anet nerf this event, it’s one of the few things in that whole kitten path that I actually enjoy. Devourers? Boring autoattack. Bombs? Sleepwalk through it. Magmacyte? Glitchy irritating time waster. post-nerf boss? afk autoattack damage sponge. Where’s the fun anymore?
really bad engineer
i’ve killed everything in that room around the 91% mark.
the best possible thing you can bring without doubt for this encounter, is a Guardian with a Greatsword.
Binding Blade is one of the strongest abilities ingame, use it.
this event was changed a long time ago when CoF2 was overfarmed because of how insanely easy it was.
the issue at hand is that this particular event is much harder than most events in any other dungeon excluding Arah and when SE1 got changed.
the balance of difficulty is out of place, but it’s by no means impossible to kill them all.
my group always focus the casters down first.
Smokelord is always no.1 priority, he spawns with 2 Shadowblades, these are also very hard hitters, binding blade is great for gathering them up and nuking them all down, they should all be killed asap.
next focus on the fanatic, the Archers are not so much of an issue because they will spend most of their time attempting to run away from nearby players and stay at range, things like Ring of Warding cause them to just stand there hitting the ring for a good few seconds.
Hellstorms (flamethrower enemies) are killed very easily with Retaliation.
Flame Callers have innate stability, you cannot pull or push them so when he spawns try and drag the Fanatic who spawns with him together to aoe them both down.
the Blademasters do very little to cause for concern and because they are melee spend most of their timing just dying to any cleaves/aoe whilst you focus other targets.
Probably it was a month ago when I was with a pug doing path 2, a warrior single-handedly solo-kite all the mobs inside that room. No deaths. The rest of the members were just watching outside with amazement. That was the only time I saw someone solo-kite that room without dying.
Did CoF path 2 yesterday. During the dungeon, we clearly saw that our group DPS was very high, we were competent players and fairly skilled.
Magg kite room, we said kitten it, we’re fighting.
So we fought. Make sure to take down the big ones first, the “silvers”. Then it’s a piece of cake. We didn’t die, maybe a few downs here and there.
Completed 100% with just killing mobs in a couple of parties before (all of them were pugs groups), you need someone with CC lock though like a hammer specced warrior to stop the smokelords and hell storms from CCing to much.
And if the players can’t dodge the smokelord eruption or dark field then they are just bad, no excuse for that.
Also one of the big mistakes I’m seeing people make is that they are reviving people. Reviving people in that part is stupid and only gets you and the downed person killed, you revive people by rallying them through kills, never with the F button (unless you have a warbanner).
lv80 Necromancer, all professional skills unlocked, working on the final norn elite skills.

I saw an ele kit to around 70%
If the rest of the group can’t even do the other 30% or 40, then it is quite an useless team.
seen a guardian and shout warrior kite it 100% without dying, also like everyone else says, kill them all if you have the right group, worse case scenario kill until you get overwhelmed then start kiting

Well, if your party is more on the tanky site, kite. If your guys are DPS specced, kill.
If you try the opposite in each case, you are most likely not going to have a good time.
Even when pugging, instead of kiting this part, I instruct my party to kill everything. We just burn everything down, starting with smokes and the mages, the hard hitters. With me as a GS Guardian, I pull all the mobs together (Binding Blade) and as the main target gets burst down, the surrounding mobs are burned down pretty fast by the aoe. This is a process of target calling, fast dps and smooth crowd control. I simply refuse to kite these mobs and out of my past 36 runs I’ve only failed this part once (with magic find pugs). You don’t need any specific class to do this, I have done this many a time with my ranger and no I repeat no heavy armor classes in my party, or mesmers. I actually find this is a more difficult encounter if you choose to kite.
I think what needs more of look at is path 3, I’d love to be able to take pugs on that but they are always very reluctant to go, resulting in having to take guildies
It can be noted that on path 2, more often than not, I have to explain to my pugs the concept of actually killing these mobs instead of kiting. many have never done it before an are genuinely surprised by how easy it is. Try giving it a go sometime, as long as you don’t have signet baddies and magic finder’s this part is not so bad.

I’ve been in PUGs that killed rather than kited. Granted thats a bit rare since PUGs are generally undergeared and played rather poorly. For example, I’ve been in PUG groups that couldn’t kite that event.
“overpowered mobs”
Yeah please get rid of any sort of difficulty of the game. Because ppl are willing to farm so you need to make it easy.
Just try to fight like a man rather than kitting. They are meant to be killed. If you can’t kill them you should think : what’s wrong with my char/team? rather than : these mobs are overpowered.
My guild does this dungeon almost daily and hasn’t had to kite this room for a long time, why don’t you try killing them sometime instead of kiting.
If you’re thinking kiting is the only answer then you’re allready in trouble. I never kite and the odd time I pug what I say to convince them to try killing is that kiting you will die, killing you may die. Why would’nt you want to try and kill, if it goes south just start kiting no harm no foul.
Also have never not even once failed killing, I just ask them to attack what I target and it all goes smooth. Have done it as the only guard in a dps group, have also killed with 4 guards and an engineer.
Just try it you may be surprised. My advice, keep them grouped(there are tricks to this if you dont have alot of cc but this is not a tutorial thread) and ignore the trash, they die from aoe all on their own.
You can kill the mobs if you team is half – decent…(Though most people who run CoF are generally really bad).
80Rng – 80Wa – 80Thief – 80Grd – 80Ele – 80Engi – 80Necro
I do this dungeon everyday and I force my group to fight to the end. If the group is weak, yes, we wipe 2-3 times, but then they learn, and are thankful. How do I force them? I play together with my gf and when they are like “go for meatshield” and some strange random numbers afterwards, we both sit down and say that we want to fight. They usually agree :P and I find it rather easier imo. I’m a guardian and i do most of the “heavy-lifting” in there yet sometimes i dont even pay repair bills, which is amazing. Gives you that feel of accomplishment
1-2-2 is for scrubs.
All in on the Smokelord. Call targets and focus fire.
As most people mentioned here, you can just jump on smokelords and all other mages that dish out serious dmg and tank/kite rest of melee and ranged squad until its over.
It really isn’t hard if you call targets and everyone follows. If you kill first 2 or 3 spawns completely you will have no problem kiting rest of them until magg blows up everyone in the room.
Try with friends and bring some consumables if you think you don’t have enough dmg, i’m quite sure it will work.
P.s. full exotic armor and weapons are needed.
