When it comes to coming up with the build, I should be all good for that.

However, the team I’m in is lacking condi damage for the red boss in the first fight.
I’m currently a condi necro and it’s not capable of putting out the Condi burst as well as i know some other classes can, so I’m going to be changing class to help better the team.

I’m wondering what class would be better to hop towards? I’m leaning towards a viper engineer as I know that is arguably the highest DPS’ing class in-game right now, on top of providing a truck ton of burns to condi burst.

It also (due to how versatile the engineer is) opens up the ability for me to spec as a tank if needed due to how sturdy they can be with the right traits.

Would this be a smart choice?

If you can play a condition engineer effectively you should absolutely do so. It is head and shoulders above every other condition class in the game at the moment, and even a full tank condition engineer will out-damage any other condition build you can run. It is simply very difficult to play, with a lot of kit swapping and timing cooldowns, and without that experience the class will simply not perform.

Outside of engineer none of the other condition builds really shine. ATAT Ranger is the best on paper, but requires a stationary target that you won’t get in raids – against a moving target it is kind of a pile. Guardian and Warrior have middling condition builds that are closer to hybrids than real condition damage, and neither is really a top DPS build.

I’d say that necro is actually the best of the rest – it can crank out a lot of conditions, does reasonable burning, and being tanky with a lot of condi and boon removal provides utility. Venomshare thief might do a touch more damage than a condition necro, but not by much and offers way, way less utility. Nothing else is really attractive IMO.

TL;DR – play engineer unless you can’t

Honestly?
Are you 100% certain it’s not a gear/build/l2p issue?
Are you playing condi Necro? or Reaper?
Using Viper/Sinister gear?
Is someone else in your group throwing out chills (which over-writes your Deathly Chill)?

Condi Reaper
It’s not REALLY a fair comparison (Several of the others didn’t use food, pvp gear has less stats, group buffs like might scale classes differently, etc…); but as a very generalized comparison, it should show you that condi Reaper isn’t “trash”.
You should be able to compete on condi team just fine.

Now, if you are trying to min/max, then sure.
Roll Engi and hope it doesn’t get nerfed before you’ve got it geared.
