I haven’t been able to find an exact answer, but here’s what I ask.

Do you HAVE to do story mode before you can do explorable mode? Like, if you were invited to a group, and while they have all done story mode and you haven’t, would you be able to go? Or would it deny you into explorable?

Only the person that enters an instance portal first needs to have Story Mode completed. I know it first hand – yesterday I finished CoE explorable even though I’ve never been there before.
