Q:

For raids (starting with Vale Guardian), I’ve heard a few folks in-game stating minimum DPS requirements (via the golem in the Special Forces Training Area).

So a couple questions:

1. What’s the recommended DPS for Raids (if different by raid, then specify for Vale Guardian)

2. What simulator settings should be used to obtain measurement (full boons? full class buffs? max vuln stacks? etc.)

Not starting any arguments about gear — I’m just looking for info so I can set some goals.

Part of me thinks that someone in ANet was thinking “hey, wanna see something funny? Watch this…”

So for reference I predominantly pug raids (started this summer), I have about 35 total kills, so I’m certainly not an experienced vet, but I’m not exactly a rookie either.

If you are saying that groups are going to make you go to the golem and demonstrate your dps, I have never seen that happen. Literally, never once.

What they may be referring to is your ability to do a smart rotation of your skills in a raid fight. If you are doing proper rotations, you could try to reach the numbers given by qt here: http://qtfy.enjin.com/dps They explain their conditions.

You should try to reach numbers close to the given numbers. However, you must keep in mind that they are completely min maxed, including the agony infusions and expensive food (which you should use for raids, but may not want to waste on just testing). You are going to be 100 power/condi damage below or more most likely. Additionally, I have heard that qt likes to do these tests multiple times, and then report the absolute highest dps rather than the average. If your getting within 10% of the stated numbers, you are probably doing a correct rotation.

However, the biggest thing I want to emphasize to you is to understand your role in the raid. For example, at VG an ele might get put on green circles team. That ele will most likely want to bring lightning flash instead of a dps boosting utility.

The point is, doing a proper rotation is certainly part of raiding, but it is far from your only responsibility.

I can’t speak for others, but my guild uses class benchmarks. For example to raid as a PS warrior, you have to have 17k dps, or as a condi reaper you have to be over 19k dps, eles have to be over 30k on large hitboxes. Just some examples. If you have a specific class that you are wanting to play in mind, it would help us if you could tell us what it is, that way we can provide you with some numbers that you would be seeing.

If you are wanting a generic dps benchmark, then you would have to take the boss and divide it’s HP by the time limit on the timer for an idea of what average dps you would need.

Your DPS in an actual raid will be very different to what you see in training area. You will often have to interrupt your rotation, might get downed and have the boss move out of your AoEs. If you want to practice your rotation against a stationary boss anyway, the DPS benchmarks by qT should be very close to the theoretical maximum. They will always specify the setting (all buffs/“realistic” buffs/…). Also keep in mind they use food for the tests.
If your numbers get close to theirs, you know your rotations pretty well. That’s just half of the success though, you need to be also able to execute them under the pressure of a raid.

And if this isn’t obvious, every class has different theoretical maximum DPS. You usually only bring eles and DDs for the DPS, other classes are there for some kind of utility (healing, buff sharing). You should still be doing as much DPS as possible, but even with perfect rotations you won’t reach the numbers of a DPS class.

Understood — I wasn’t trying to imply that DPS is the only criteria for a successful raid.

I simply need some goals that I can work towards — and the Training Area is the only empirical measurement that I’m aware of.

This is exactly what I was looking for: http://qtfy.enjin.com/dps#Ranking
