DR? (Diminished Returns)
DR is still in place, just better now. In this last patch we adjusted DR, but how it works shouldn’t punish efficient/speed running players anymore. If you run the same path continually you will still be hit by it, but we’ve looked at the data and made tweaks in hopes it won’t be punishing players who are legitimately completing things very quickly.
We’re watching it though to make sure nothing weird happens because of it. Please do report your findings if you feel you are hit by it unfairly so we can look into it.
Since DR is a safety net system for exploits, we’re likely not going to announce when and how we made changes to it.

When ya’ll did this “tweaking” ya’ll broke dragon DR.
So DR also affects Fractals of the Mists?
That may be the reason for all the complains that the forum are getting about the loot on fractals…
So i just did arah path 3 with my warrior, i can do it right away with my necro and dont get hit with dr for the tokens?

DR does not effect fractals in the same way. What players are seeing is just RNG.

Im sorry but i dont believe i do fractals since the launch(+-3months now) and Never, Never got a jade maw chest without a rare, after the last patch pufff almost everyday now, and as you can see on forums im not the only one, if its really RNG theres alot of ppl with bad luck.

I’ve been doing fractals since the launch and almost never got a jade maw chest with a rare. Lately I’ve been getting multiple rares out of the chest.
Anecdotes are worse than useless for trying to track alleged changes in RNG as people will only ever comment when things are going poorly. Of course all your anecdotal evidence is from people having poor luck, they wouldn’t ever bother to comment otherwise. It’s like interviewing people leaving a bar and freaking out that almost everyone you talked to had been drinking.
Sorry for the off topic but are you planning on change some of the materials for some weapons/items
For exemple:
Right now is extremely expensive to add +5 agony(infuse) to the backpack, cmon 250 Glob of Ectoplasm really!? there is unique weapons that can be made on the Mystic forge that cost less.
and the Infusion for exemple
Precise Infusion = +5 Precision and +5Ar costs 100 Vicious Claw and 20 Mystic Coin ??? for more +5
I still dont know what is need to infuse a Amulet but if is something like this( +50ectos or +50 t6mats +5mystic coins) i will stop doing Fractals.
And to be honests theres is really no reason to do +20 fractals, theres no better loot.

This pretty much sums things up. People rarely comment when something is working properly, and usually only bring things up in a positive light if there is a discussion about it and they feel provoked to do as such.
For instance, we recently made it possible to join and reconnect in fractals. Prior to that patch there would be a new thread nearly every other day about how bad fractals were because of disconnects, and those threads would be the most popular. But since fixing it there hasn’t been a single thread about it, or any comments. It’s just the general nature of people to happily enjoy things instead of taking the time out of enjoying something to exclaim that you are enjoying something.
Let’s just admit the facts.
Play the game your way, enjoy DR.
Play the game Anet’s way, enjoy Fractals.
Seriously just admit you want everyone in your sandbox and we can just all play bobble-head.

Hey Robert, if I take one of my several characters, and just leave them parked outside of a given dungeon, and all I do with that character is play that dungeon, will I hit DR? (assuming that I also play other characters in other areas most of the time and only run the dungeon on that character every few days).
Likewise, if I park another character in a single area and run the local events with them, and that’s all that I do with that character, but I do plenty of things with other characters and don’t spend more than a cycle or two on that one character, then does that activate DR on that character?
I would travel around more from location to location, but waypoint costs, especially at levels above, say, 30 or so, make that prohibitively expensive.

They pop up after every major patch. It’s especially true after this patch as the improvements to fractals (namely the disconnect fix) lead towards more people playing them.

OMG patch nerfed loot! is a hallmark of MMO’s since 1998. every single game wihtout exception, even mere maintenance patches.

People have been complaining about bad loot since day 1 of the fractals. It isn’t new, and generally I don’t bother to answer those questions since it is just RNG and speculation. Some people find a precursor in that chest, and others get blues. Just the nature of RNG whenever you open that chest.
I’ll ask around tomorrow to see if anything changed, but looking at it right now I see no changes to the fractal chest loot.
I would travel around more from location to location, but waypoint costs, especially at levels above, say, 30 or so, make that prohibitively expensive.

I’m not sure if he’ll be able to answer that, but my experience has been yes. I had a character parked in Cursed Shore for Pent/Shelter/Jofast, and it appeared that character would develop DR if I never left and did anything else. After taking the character to WvW and some dungeons for a few hours and returning to the same event running my frequency of drops occurring and the quality of those drops appeared to improve significantly.
As to waypoint costs, it’s my experience that if you’re spending enough time in an area to have your drop rates affected, you’re going to make more than enough gold to make the waypoint cost trivial.

Hi there, thank you so much for the response, at least I have a slight clue what is happening now, yes indeed I do park a few level 80’s at the dragon area. Is this behavior frowned upon and are you suggesting we shouldn’t do this or is this an unintended bug? (the reason people do this in the first place is because of the absurdly high wp cost lol). Also, i don’t always just park the character there, I often take them to WvW and stuff to do things (does wvw not count as a good enough map change?). And yes, even after doing some wvw, I still get a bug.
I’ll ask around tomorrow to see if anything changed, but looking at it right now I see no changes to the fractal chest loot.
Speak with Colin Johanson, they are investigating loot issues with the game that people have been experiencing.
And yes while there are people who don’t see a loot issue, more people have been experiencing loot issues since the Jan 28 patch.

i don’t understand. personally, i don’t play (nor camp) the meta events, but i’m not sure how to interpret the two quotes above.
assuming i’d leave one of my characters at the location of the shatter event, and would only log in with that character to do the shatterer event, and then log out again, would that hit DR after a while? if i repeat this over and over, of course.
what exactly do you mean by “play the events”? play the events of the meta-event chain? play other events in that area? play events in general? it sounds like exclusively playing the same dragon event (the shatterer one, in this example) over and over, and not doing anything else with that character would lead to DR.
for the record, i’m aware that you’re probably not allowed to answer most of these questions and i can understand that. it’s just something i’m wondering about.
but still, thanks for the previous responses, Robert!

I interpreted it to mean that if you’re completing the whole meta-event chain, rather than just the boss fight, you would likely be doing enough to avoid DR. But that doesn’t seem like it would work on Tequatl (who has no leading events).

Can you clarify this a little more? There have been many people wondering why DR is occurring in dragon events in this thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Dragon-chest-bugged/first and maybe you could shed some light on the situation.
From my experiences, since the last update, whenever I do the same dragon event twice on the same character, I get DRed and don’t get a chest, regardless of how much time has elapsed between dragon kills and regardless of whether or not I play (and do events) on other characters between dragon kills. For example, if I were to kill a dragon before going to bed and then come back the next day and log into the same character and kill it again, I would not get a chest.
Is this the intended behavior? It certainly doesn’t sound like (in this case) DR is fulfilling its role of “safety net system for exploits”.
Thanks for your responses, I appreciate it!

The loot is crap. Utter crap.
I should NOT be getting blues from The Claw of Jormag.
Hardly ANY of your content is worth the reward anymore.
I understand the need for patience and hard work but the fact is the drop rate on rares and exotics is barely enough to even give people hope. Even masterwork gear in some cases……
You do not have a good balance of risk vs reward.
It is ALL crap nearly ALL the time.
I never understood reason why the DR is in game. One acceptable reason would be protection agaisnt bots, but punishing players for farming is.. well.. strange. As they are suppliers for most of people that rather buy stuff from TP rather than getting themselves.

Can we just get rid of “blues” from fractal chests? Seriously…last time I did fractals it was at lvl 32 and i got blues and greens from Jade Maw chest…kinda disappointing

Perhaps it migh be wise to reduce the variance on that RNG then. When one person gets a precursor and everyone else gets blues, it is going to generate irritation at best, dissatisfaction, anger and severe diminishment of enjoyment at worst.

So no loot for anyone? As soon as drop rates increase by any significant amount the same people are going to start complaining that their drops have no value because “everyone has one”.
See posts where people complain about tokens and how it is bad because it allows everyone to get the same thing and the lack of excitement because there are no “lucky drops”.
DR is just a terrible design for devs that are inable to balance basic stuff out in a good manner and thereby shouldnt have had the job in the first place -.- give it over to the new people which can actually come up with a good solution FGS!
I like this game, but it’s sad to think that one of the big reasons i’m excited for the elder scrolls online is the chance to be REWARDED for the things I do in that game.
I feel like i’m crawling through the desert digging for water in this game.

Now I don’t know about the loot system in Elder Scrolls Online, but if it would give every player the best possible items from a chest every time, then those items would be as valuable as blues in GW2. Also the economy would be non-existent in that game. If that game would indeed have minimal gear progression, then I suppose it’s just that type of game. And please don’t make untrue statements like not getting rewarded in GW2, there hasn’t been a single MMO so far that gave you rewards as frequently as GW2 does for every activity (XP is in fact also a reward).
Need to do something about the players starting the dungeons, because if you dc at the end and he leaves you say is it worth playing and not getting the final chest?
Im so kitten off this is happening to much we are allways not secure because we have this concern risk of spend time for nothing.

Well if it was a sub based game, i’d agree that having DR in it would be a very bad idea but as this game has no sub and runs off a microtransaction system(RL cash to gems to gold), i can see why they would put DR in and keep a stranglehold per say on drops. It forces you to use their store with RL cash or just suck it up and play the DR game.
And yeah it is great against bots but they have evolved. Now i guess they sell legendaries.
@defi.4127. I don’t think people are really complaining about “rewards” in the effect of xp. I think or at least i am complaining about the drop rate on stuff like lodestones, T6 mats and exotics. Try to go out and farm for a specific T6 mat or a lodestone. The drop rates on em are ludicrous. As for exotics i understand they should be rare but since starting this game at headstart and running 3 80s everyday through dungeons, fractals, dragons, i can honestly say i’ve prolly gotten no more than 10-15 exotics as drops and thats in a 5 month period. That’s a pretty kitten low drop rate or i’ve got really bad luck.
Am I legendary yet!?
(edited by Sauzo.6821)
^^This..I have 9 lvl 80s and had one parked at every meta event that had a chest so as to avoid WP fees.
Congrats on 9 of them. I’m working on my third now.
So long as you play the events you should be fine to park characters in a given area.
This is not working.
Example: Fire elemental chain in Metrica. My smaller character does the events leading up to the fire elemental. As soon as the elemental actually appears, I bring in a level 80 and kill the elemental. No chest.
In between events such as these, my other characters are wandering around the world killing things… I don’t JUST log into events.
I don’t know what the larger picture here is, but I do know that I made multiple 80s to park them at important places, and now I’m doing quests and getting no reward. I do not find this a fun experience. I don’t know how to ‘play the game properly’ in order to make sure I get the rewards I earn. It’s extremely frustrating.
Thanks for reading.
“Since DR is a safety net system for exploits, we’re likely not going to announce when and how we made changes to it.”
“The issue with the dragon chests should only effect people who park characters at dragons and don’t play them anywhere else. Is this what you are doing?”
Logic:
1) DR == anti exploit system
2) DR punish people for playing event on that character they want to
3) playing event on that character they want to == exploit
4) exploit == bannable offence
Why don’t you just ban us for not playing your game the way YOU want?
So a group of us just did CoF Path 1 so 60 tokens. We changed to alt characters, ran CoF Path 1 again, but this time 3 out of the 5 people in the group only received 30 tokens. The other 2 received 60. Same group of 5 people though so I am not sure if this was intended.
There is something broken in the DR mechanics. I cant get any more chest from Tequatl event while getting gold-medal every time. Tried porting to different map and did different events and mobs, came back to the dragon and got no chest. Dont know what to do now beside not spending any cash on the shop until this broken thing is removed. And yes, stop telling people how to spend their time and how play the game, if they bot or exploit something ban them, if not leave them alone!
DR is a terrible idea whose point was to lessen the gap between casual and hardcore players. It, in fact, has only made that problem worse. The less you get out of your play time, the more valuable every bit of play time you do have becomes. DR does nothing to deter botting or exploiting, it just makes it more difficult for average players to obtain what the bots can get ahold of.
Saladtha (Lv 80 salad sidekick to bears) | Dunelle (Lv 80 eviscerating muppet)
Karmell (Lv 80 human might dispenser) | Vast says hi~.
I’m getting 30 tokens every time I do CoF p1 now, doesn’t matter what character I use (Yes, the daily just reset too). What’s going on?

We’re working on our DR system and looking at new data all the time, and like all things there may be bugs or unexpected quirks in it. If we just outright banned people who got hit by DR, that wouldn’t be practical.
It’s entirely possible that the DR system hitting parked event characters wasn’t intended, but was a result of us fixing an exploit or other problem within the system, and it just happened to slip by us in testing.
And like I said before, DR is a safety net to prevent exploitation. That means (to me at least) that is is not the metric for us to drop the ban hammer on people – we have other data used for that. There’s different ways to possibly unintentionally hit it, and I’d think it rather unfair to ban people over it.
For now DR is hitting parked characters who you don’t do anything else with but that specific thing. To avoid being hit by this, whether it is intentional functionality or a bug, do some other stuff on that character.
I wish we didn’t have to have the system, but when exploits arise players abuse them, so we have to have something. We’ll continue to evaluate its functionality and fine tune it.
@Robert Hrouda
Once things are tuned down, there’s a chance the DR System is going to be taken away? It felt for me more of a time “solution”, but yea, main concern is, once everything is tuned, if it is going to stay or not, you know how it can be sometimes.

I don’t think it will ever go away, because there’s always the potential for something to slip past us and enter the game. Not all players will abuse things, but the potential threat to the economy and the game is too high to go back to a system where a safety net is not in place. We saw the data from when it wasn’t in place and what things were like for CoF, and we simply can’t go back to a system open to exploit like it was before.
Of course, I am not in charge of such things. People paid much more than me get to make those decisions

I can’t speak for anyone else, but any “safety net” against exploits, that negativly impacts how NORMAL players can play the game are generally not worth having.. theres a reason stuff like DRM has gone down the drain, It may be SAFE and EASIER for the dev, but it has a negative impact on the players ability to play the game..
And Yes, I realise DRM and DR is in no way the same thing, but it has similar problems, it negativly impacts the average joe consumer.
And while you DR system is not the WORST example of this I’ve seen, it most definatly has a negative impact on what options players have when playing, It dosnt become “do what you want to do anymore” It becomes “do what you want in moderation, or we punish you”
DR system or not, I still can’t walk 2 feet in frostgorge without running into a choochoo train of botters that you would have to blind not to see were following a pre-determined path.
Same goes for DR in dungeons tbh, there would be no reason to have DR in dungeons if not for the fact that certain paths are so easy, that they would be to farmable without it, Again DR is used as a shortcut by you as developers, rather then fixing the actual problem.
And like it or not, these pre-dr events happened, and the ones who really pay the price for it are newer players like me, who are now quite limited when it comes to catching up economicaly to other players.
