Really matter that much in a dungeon? I know the best ones are Guardian, Mesmer and Warrior… but are the other classes really that bad?

Because I could totally see a Necro being totally amazing in dungeons, actually pretty much any class. Yet people are always so picky :/

Wtf.

Wtf.

the problem is many dugeon encounters are pretty broken.

the problems can be summed up by a few points

  • mob damage
  • projectiles
  • dps
  • defiant

Most mobs do crazy damage which will down most classes. Only warrior and guard survive the encounter well without any effort. Mesmer have very active damage migration

Many mobs uses projectiles as the main for attack- (CM i looking at you)

Warriors have insane dps which speeds up the dugeon

Defiant denies all cc abilities which make boss battles a giant dps target.

It’s preferable but not required. I have those plus an eng and thief, I do well with those as well (all 80’s), especially the stealth thief for dps and emt. Of course some players can run any class, while others… well get kicked :P But still, imo good to at least have a guard in the group, maybe an additional melee. In any case, it’ll be easier to find pug groups if you are packing one of the members of the trinity, all geared up and ready for some forced grouping. I always did like forced grouping and preferred classes anyway

Nah it doesnt really matter.

Well, except for one class: Ranger. It breaks most dungeon content due to the kitten pet mechanics (at least the necro can put/spec away pets).

Anyone doing dungeons with a ranger is either a troll or someone that thought “ZOMGPEWPEWUNICORNBOW!!!!!!” when creating their class.

Mmm…I’m not a huge fan of ranger pets…otherwise I don’t really care so long as they know how to play their profession.

I disagree. No matter what profession you have, you’ll get destroyed on silver mobs (especially Arah) if you don’t play properly. And that includes Warrior, Mesmer and Guardian.

What makes encounters easier are neither your natural health pool nor the fact that you start with 291 extra Armor Value but how you mitigate damage using your skills and how quickly you can DPS down mobs (because obviously you don’t always have 100% uptime on projectile reflection and stuff).

Try to play 5 ultra defensive warriors against Arah silver mobs and compare with traditional War³/Guardian/Mesmer and you’ll probably think different.

Some professions require more skill/effort to achieve equal or close enough effectiveness as others. This I believe is the real issue.

As an example a ranger would have to work himself to the bone to come up to par ( or close enough) with warrior DPS, he would need to be in full glass cannon, constantly switching pets for quickness and weapons etc etc.

And yet he will never match the warrior’s group utility. He can however, provide some excellent CC’s and a water combo field. Many groups will of course prefer the warrior’s group utility, especially with skills like FGJ which up the DPS of the entire team and Battle standard for aoe might/fury or AOE res.

There are also points in time where your profession really does matter in a dungeon.

some examples can be found in the shaman boss fight from fractals:

Those who wants the chest at the first fight know you need to kill all the veterans before they kick the people over into the lava. When I am on my guardian and i have a team with poor DPS, at fotm 40+ it doesnt matter if im in full glass and running through all my CC’s to push them back, it’s just not enough to take them down in time. I switch to my glass cannon ranger and can burst those down no problem. Once we get to the shaman boss at the very end, once again, I’m now better off on my guardian many times over than my ranger for its supreme defensive capabilities in the ways for projectile reflection.

Another fractal: dredge-
Thieves are much appreciated for stealth although not needed. But very useful.

If you get the path where you need to run bombs to the door, often I will switch to my mesmer and portal/invisi run bombs up.. This can certainly save alot of time.

Personally I play for fun so…

…I play w/e class I feel like and avoid speed runs (especially cof speed runs because it is too easy).

Now I’ve played 4 classes so far and they are definately all viable in all dungeons I’ve played. I can usually get good enough dps assuming I’m using appropriate traits and gear. I’d definately say my war currently has the highest dps and currently my thief is second.

Classes all have something to offer but what the group is composed of does matter.

Add more sound effects to The Minstrel plz.

The thing isn’t that professions like necromancer, engineer, elementalist or whatever are not able to do dungeons at all. But why would you choose an engineer when you can have a warrior that deals 8 times more damage and grants buffs to the group. Warrior damage isn’t OP, dungeons with 4 Warrior 1 Mesmer teams just take as long as they are (from my point of view) supposed to be. The problem is that most professions are UP, because dealing trash damage and not offering offensive support. And the problem with the ranger… is the pet. I would prefer a level 40 thief over any level 80 ranger in Arah.

Wtf.

Full zerk 4 war / 1 mes is only optimal for speed farming CoF 1.
3 war / 1 guard / 1 mes has gained popularity thanks to some popular speed-running videos and the DPS check in Arah P4 (Simin fight before being fixed).

Can you complete any dungeon in a reasonable time with virtually any setup? Yes.

5 Rangers doing Arah Path 2 in less than 15 minutes? I’d like to see that.
4 Warriors and 1 Mesmer (all berserker) is probably the best team-setup for every dungeon except AC. A (berserker/knight) guardian just make the run feel more comfortable.

I say it mostly depends on skill and knowledge, however profession matters a little by what utility you bring. Lets look at guard vs ele.

1) A really good guardian will be able to time when to share aegis, they can know when to heal the party, grant stability at perfect times like in time warp, they will be able to pull and gather mobs into a cluster (like the 4 cat-bots in fotm) to easily aoe them down. A bad guard won’t be able to do all that, but can still share some healing, and will be able to hopefully provide some stability and aegies at random times.

2) A good elementalist will be able to share auras to help chill/stun foes, share might, and fire aura if D/D. A bad elementalist will either auto attack or randomly lay down combo fields hoping they get used.

My point is that if you’re really good and know your class, it shouldn’t matter. If you’re bad then you might be less useful on one profession than another.

RIP in peace Robert

As long as you aren’t expecting perfection, with proper skill and reasonable level/gear I think any group is viable. A guildie Mesmer and my Guardian picked up 3 PuGs for a run, I don’t remember the dungeon but it wasn’t one of the easy-mode ones. We ended up with a Ranger, Thief and Necro. We did pretty well in the end. It look us a bit longer than a normal guild run with voice chat for everyone but the three PuGs knew the dungeon, their class and their role in both.

If you are expecting speed runs and perfection then you might have problems.
