Q:
Hey all,
I’d like to get something straight, since I’ve heard many different stories.
Is Dungeon Selling/Buying legal or illegal??
My personal experience with support was this answer:
Thank you for contacting the Guild Wars 2 Support Team.
Dungeon Sellers and Dungeon Buyers are considered Real Money Traders, which is a violation of the User Agreement.
We recommend not to do it, because the failure to comply with these rules of conduct may result in the termination of your Guild Wars 2 game account according to the Guild Wars 2 User Agreement.
This was mailed to me on 25-11-2013
Please make sure you have evidence of your claims! aka Links or screenshots!
Thank you
Edit: found this 11 month old post where it says it is legal…

Just a little something to think about. Basically the title says it already.
Isn’t playing in a meta setup also “playing how I want to play”?
Because technically I think it is. It is the preffered playstyle of what I will call “efficency oriented players”.
I don’t like the label elitist for a lot of the regulars here, because elitist carries a certain flavour of snobbism in the MMO-community. Something that doesn’t necessarily apply to a lot of the regulars around here. The same way I don’t like how some people use the term casuals by the way. But I’m digressing from my own topic.
Some may put it differently and call it more interesting/more challenging/faster/superior/whatever or as my choice of words implies: more efficient.
But nevertheless it is how someone “wants to play” opposed as to how someone else might like to play.
This is where I have trouble agreeing with some of the regulars here. You call someone out because they might use the “how they want to play”-argument. But aren’t you basically doing the exact same thing?
Before the flames start to rise – I’m afraid something that will happen sooner or later as always when this topic is discussed – I would like you to remember: I do not argue the fact that a meta setup will be much more efficient and faster. If employed properly that is.
I simply would like to point out that imo it is simply another form of “playing how you want to play” and criticizing someone for that argument doesn’t necessarily help your cause.
I can understand not wanting to play with someone not sharing the same philosophy about how to play the game. Because if something like that happens either side infringes on the fun factor for the other side.
But frankly put, that is not a one way street and works both ways or from both points of view.
Jus a few thoughts that crossed my mind while waiting for Tequatl.
I think a lot of the “play how I want” talk comes from people who ask for build advice then tell everyone here how wrong they are.
Another thing is people constantly want to run these support builds, which aren’t really necessary in this game. People come here from other MMO’s where the trinity is the norm and act like they are helping the team with their low DPS builds that heal a little, when in fact it causes more harm than good.
Zerk is the meta for a reason, not because that’s the way people want to play. This games design is, for the most part, a DPS race. A Large part of that stems from lack of creativity in game mechanic design and hard hitting mobs/bosses with large health pools.
I PUG because I am not in a guild and I will say this. You can tell when people are running zerk and when they aren’t. I can’t ever remember a time where a group with mostly/full zerk wiped in a dungeon, things die too fast. On the other hand, when I am in an obviously low DPS group, wipes can and do occur fairly often.

That makes me question why play the game at all. Because it sounds like playing a meta setup simply for efficiency and not because you like it.
I simply can’t bend my head around the idea of spending my free time playing a game for fun when it’s not fun.
Hence my assumption people use meta setups because they like the playstyle. Efficiency alone can’t make me do that. But of course that’s just me.
For me efficiency is an important part of the eqation that makes GW2 fun for me. But I can’t see it as the only viable dogma.
Play How I want is an invalid argument for dungeons. You are joining a party with 4 other players and I dont think they should suffer because of you. Its not playing how you want , it’s getting carried how you want.
I honestly think that playing how you want is beyond selfish if you are playing where your presence actually matters. The only place where you should really play how you want is the groups that simply dont care . “Everybody is welcome , roleplaying and killing everything !!!!” This is a play how you want group but when somebody asks for efficient runs and you get a cleric staff guard it makes no sense.
And trust me those play how I wants dont wanna join those slow groups , they want the fast groups while being carried with their bad build.
Honestly if I was a guard and wanted to “support my party” I would just use the hammer and spam protection but NEVER full cleric and staff . God its so awful, its just ridiculous.
I play how I want. It involves mighty infusions and pink gear. Boom, I’m Commander Casual (since president was seen as inciting “unrest”).
People playing the meta don’t play how they want. They play how it’s best, and if what it’s best changes, so do their builds.
What I don’t get is how anyone could possibly think people who use meta builds don’t play for fun. Once you broaden your horizons, its more than apparent that people running the meta are having much more fun than those who always hide behind the phrase “I play how I want” to purposely under-perform and waste time.
People playing the meta don’t play how they want. They play how it’s best, and if what it’s best changes, so do their builds.
They make conscious effort to choose what they believe is best and therefore are doing what they want which in turn is reflected in their style of play: they’re playing how they want.
The same logic applies to non-meta setups, but in this game there exists a clear cut best…
Someday I will make a bearbow ranger to get my revenge against pugs who wasted my time with terrible builds. Oh wait even pugs kick rangers , anybody has a cleric warrior build to share with me ?
There is a clear distinction between the two camps.
How I want to play is the best possible way I can play. I use DPS meta builds and tactics because that is the best possible way one can play.
How others want to play are based on misguided notions and false beliefs. They use inefficient non-DPS builds and tactics because they think that is the best possible way one can play.

That’s precisely what I meant. Everyone decides “how they want to play” at some point. Be it meta, rp or whatever.
That’s why I consider the argument “playing howsomeone wants is bad” simply wrong, because that is what we all do.
Quick (I hope the abbreviation is acceptable, otherwise please tell me), you state meta players play how it’s best. I would say most efficient, but we can argue semantics all day and I agree that would get us nowhere.
What troubles me is that you say they don’t play how they want. Are they forced by the general terms and conditions? I think not. it is a voluntary choice.
Why would you not play a game how you want? For me playing a game how I want to play it is almost synonymous with playing it for fun. Otherwise I’d go look for a different game.

You might have noticed that I find the notion of playing a game and not doing so for fun alienating. I never said a meta player doesn’t have fun. I presume they do so and partially so because they chose to play a meta setup.
Do they have more fun? That’s something everyone has to find out and decide for themselves. I don’t presume I can chose for someone else what he would consider more fun. Why do you?

This kind of argumentation is exactly why i started this topic
I agree that expecting to be carried by someone else is selfish. But do all those people really hope to get carried? Or are they actually believing they help their group with their playstyle?
I partially agree with your second paragraph. It all comes down to the group composition. If you made it clear in your groups descritpion what you are looking for and someone with a different intention joins, well shame on them.
But if you don’t, you basically invite everyone. It’s two different philosophies that clash here. Or two opinions that weigh differently how their fun is generated.
Sometimes it is as simple as for example playing build you feel comfortable with and enjoy.
Of course if your form of fun clashes with the fun of anyone else, well that doesn’t mesh. But why would their fun be less important than yours? If they absolutely hate the meta setup because they don’t like the playstyle, yet you want them to go there, aren’t you the one infringing on their fun?
Swiftpaw put it rather well in another thread that I have problems finding right now, so instead of quoting, I can sadly only paraphrase how I understood what he wrote.
In a perfect world, meta-gamers and the rest of the population (for lack of a better term) would never clash, because it would be simply easier for them not to intermingle to avoid confrontations. That would solve all the problems.
To clarify, from here on I’m stating my own opinion again and I’m no longer paraphrasing.
Sadly, this isn’t a perfect world. And I’m aware there is no easy solution for this. I mostly created this topic to have people remember that both sides are playing how they want – for fun (I hope).
And that neither should try to force the other to comply with how they want to play the game.
You do realise its meant as humour. And yes we do play how we want. But we have the common decency to run builds which benefit the group and make runs go smoothly and quickly. Which happens to be how we want to play (being helpful).

Honestly, then some people have a weird way of expressing their humorous intent.
@Silber, trust me they do indeed get carried. Sometimes I dont attack for like 10 secs just to see what’s up with their DPS and the boss is simply not losing his HP That means they are getting carried . When I lvled my second warrior in cof , I was switching at the end boss at 10% hp and when I came
back the boss was healing with crystals instead of losing hp.
I never had a soldier or cleric gear , so I have no idea how much dmg it does but omg it must be so awful , can you imagine 4 people attacking the flaming effigy and he is HEALING . No joke btw , im not trolling this is true story. It happened to me at least with 7 parties when I lvled 11 -80 in CoF.
EDIT: i forgot that I’m using a soldier gear in tpvp but even then all my hits are crits , thanks to
UF trait , so OP!!

This article sums up very well the differences in player’s mentality.
Introducing…the Scrub
The derogatory term “scrub” means several different things. One definition is someone (especially a game player) who is not good at something (especially a game). By this definition, we all start out as scrubs, and there is certainly no shame in that. I mean the term differently, though. A scrub is a player who is handicapped by self-imposed rules that the game knows nothing about. A scrub does not play to win. Now, everyone begins as a poor player—it takes time to learn a game to get to a point where you know what you’re doing. There is the mistaken notion, though, that by merely continuing to play or “learn” the game, one can become a top player. In reality, the “scrub” has many more mental obstacles to overcome than anything actually going on during the game. The scrub has lost the game even before it starts. He’s lost the game even before deciding which game to play. His problem? He does not play to win.
(edited by SkyChef.5432)
I had that happen once before, 2 people left to level their characters, my DPS guardian got knocked back, but the other 2 guys were still attacking full speed. Yeah, healing like they weren’t even there. I jumped back in and it was losing life again, at about the same speed it was when there were 5 people there.
You’re not playing how you want, you’re playing how the game wants. Dps spec’s aren’t meta because we say so, they are meta because that’s the way the game was designed.
And that, OP, is the clincher. Everyone is playing how they want (unless they’re using a build that they dislike, which is a silly thing to do). Sure, some are more efficient than others, but ‘play how you want’ is nothing more than a moniker applied by people to belittle others that choose builds that are not up to their standards.

Incorrect. It’s more commonly used by those running substandard builds in defense of their unwillingness to change. It was only after a mass of cases like that which coined the “play how you want build” status to certain more popular substandard builds.
People who follow the meta are willing to change as soon as the meta changes. People who are labeled as ‘play how you want’ players are adamant about NOT changing, regardless of any factors that doesn’t revolve around their own stubborn desire to run what they want.
People who follow the meta = Open-minded. Always looking to change their builds to improve and optimize.
‘Play how you want’ = Picks their own builds and refuses to listen to suggestions from people on how to improve their build, regardless of reasoning or mathematical proofs.
Is it really that hard to understand?
Play how you like, whatever you think is fun.
But if I’m trying to run an efficient group I won’t be happy if somebody is wasting my time with a bad build/gear.
If I’m not trying to run an efficient group at that point in time.. if I’m just casually chilling out.. you’re welcome to join.
The meta is something which quite a controversial issue in any MMO which has buildcrafting. The meta always optmises a single or a small set of playstyles, so if a person doesn’t like playing those styles, they naturally feel that its unfair on them, whilst to the people for whom the meta falls right on their favorite playstyles, they don’t see a problem.
I’m baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.
Ok so. Play how you want.
It’s really just a humorous term to sum up these examples below. I believe it originated from multiple threads long ago (and even now, I believe there’s a few in the guardian forums) where many people simply abandoned logical and rational conversation when arguing the efficiency of their build posts and ended with, ‘welp, I play how I want.’ or ’that’s just your opinion’. It was just that sort of lazy argument people used to get themselves out of thinking.
The common applications for this phrase:
Example 1.) The Ode to Obal.
I have a ranger, and I want to play a ranged class, I want to use bows and bears because that’s what makes me happy. I want to use cleric’s ascended weapons because I like the color of the skins. Oh, you don’t like that in your dungeon, where 4 other people have to deal with my choices? Well that’s just too bad, I play how I want. Stop oppressing me.
Example 2.) The deluded.
I play full tank guardian, all pvt gear, AH mace/shield and staff. I heal my team and tank for them. If you don’t understand that then you are just being elitist. Dead dps is no dps. I’m the last one alive in every fight. While you’re all dieing, I’m ressing you up off the floor. Failure to connect the dots is pretty clear on this one. The blame is shifted to everyone else.
Example 3.) The mistaken noobie
(Note: not a particularly bad attitude, just new. We were all there at one point.)
Generally we can mistakenly refer to noobs as running ‘play how you want builds’ when they don’t know what to run and so run poor builds. That is where the association can come in and often times it’s hard to tell if someone is just new, or if they are in one of the above categorie due to thier poor build. Often times they are just lost as to what to run because there is alot of conflicting ‘opinions’ out there. Once it’s determined the player is just a noob and willing to learn and change his ways, he’s not in the play how you want category unless he decides to delude himself or not care.
Anyways, that’s generally what I and a few others mean when we mention that phrase. It can be interpreted many ways, but that’s the gist of it from me. It’s hard to sum up all these different things in one phrase and it can certainly be taken the wrong way.
(edited by swiftpaw.6397)
For me, “play how you want” is just an excuse to use bad builds, play badly, get carried, […] etc.
I have several buddies from one of my guilds who’d run trashy builds on purpose most of the time, because they either enjoy them more or simply acknowledge they’re bad at the game, which i don’t really care about, because they’re good people.
With pugs, however….
Let’s say they don’t stay in my groups for long, unless they carefully read the description before joining and do/use what they’re asked for(berserker gear&melee as much as possible).
Sometimes you also get people who just follow the meta blindly without even knowing why. A good example is people, including the runners, running Zerker in collosus when most of the fractal really isn’t about damage. Even in level 39, getting themselves wiped every 10 seconds from almost unavoidable 2k explosions.
Yes, cliffside is also all about damage. Not sure what kind of trash players you’ve picked up, but i’ve had my fair share of those.
I’ve also had groups that wiped to chanters at the arm seals(on old lv28-48) while i was going to the other side to smash the seal. The 4 of them had such little damage that they couldn’t clear chanters in time without getting wiped, because they deal such high damage.
I think it’s important to note that some people really do just play the builds they’re happy with. I run a sword/shield & greatsword warrior with full Celestial Gear and Shout Heals. I find that I like having the security of being able to heal in a pinch, and still put out enough damage to be relevant in most game situations.
I also realize, however, that my build isn’t geared towards speed clearing, experienced groups. I know that my build won’t measure up to the standard of those groups, so when I run dungeons I always put “Noob Friendly” in the tag. I typically get grouped with people with some understanding of their classes that can benefit from the support I provide, and I get to run dungeons without people kicking me for not running a meta-DPS spec.
In short, if you join a group clearly listed as “speed clear” and can’t pull your weight, then yes, you’re being disruptive with the build you’ve chosen, and playing your way is going to get you kicked, just like complaining about my group being full of noobs and people in crappy gear is gonna get you kicked from mine. It’s all about ensuring a good experience for everyone, and it’s up to us to determine what that means in any given situation.
A lot of terms get a different meaning when used in these forums.
For example: Everyone that tries to complete dungeons in the fastest time possible gets called out as an elitist, even if the definition of elitist wont fit on them.
The same is true for the words like “casual” or terms like “play how I want”. Playing how you want is per se not a bad thing, however thats not what this term is used for in these forums.
A typical “play how I want” player usually plays a full soldier warrior with shoutheals, a 1,5k range camping bearbow or a heal guard and thinks he is da baws in dungeons and wont accept people telling him otherwise. The controversy really starts when these guys run into the forums, post their builds and defend their viability in terms of damage output/time efficiency to the teeth. And while it is wrong to immediately fault someone for playing a suboptimal build, it is also wrong stating that this “suboptimal build” is really the way to go and you should gtfo, kitten, etc. .
So yes the term “playing how I want” is used in a wrong way, but it helps when describing someone that wont listen to you, no matter how hard you try to tell him.
Edith: Funny how st f_u gets censored but gtfo wont …

Explosion damage doesn’t appear on combat log and doesn’t get prevented by Endure pain so it’s not normal damage. That leaves either pure damage which ignores armor or percent damage which ignores armor and scales with health. I suspect latter because that’s what they have used a lot recently which means your toughness has no effect and vitality just makes it worse.
Most people don’t run bad builds in dungeons because they think it’s the best or the most fun, but because they bring their WvW zerging/roaming or open PvE builds into dungeons. With the exception of “tanks” and “healers” who are convinced they are helping their party.
The problem is that a lot of “I play how I want” still wanna run dungeons fast. Some don’t, and post “no skipping/stacking” or “casual friendly run” and I think that’s great. But a lot of them have no problems joining speedruns, probably because they think the rest won’t notice, which is false.
And assuming that they play how they want because it’s fun is saying that people in this game run dungeons because they are fun. Dungeons themselves aren’t fun anymore for people that’s been running them for a year. Running with friends using voip or with cool pugs is pretty much the only entertaining thing about dungeons right now.
A few pet theories of mine to explain the play how you want mindset. I rate each one by how much it makes me cringe when I hear PHYWs use them.
1. “I don’t like to respec between pve and wvw.”
This is either because the person doesnt play a lot and doesnt have the gold or whatever to maintain two separate gearsets or he is lazy.
Cringe factor: 3/10
2. “I wvw a lot, and PVE is easy so you can play whatever”
This person is similar to the first, except they bring a WvW elitist mindset in. They are pro-zergers (clearly insanely better at pvp than you could ever hope to be) and they don’t mind letting you know how easy pve is as they Scepter/shield the boss down with their Healway Guardian. Since they didn’t take ANY damage (or immediately healed whatever they did take) it proves they are right, and it doesn’t matter that it took 10 minutes longer to finish the run than it could have, because PvE (unlike high stakes wvw zergs) is a pass/fail test.
Cringe Factor: 8/10
3. “This is what I enjoy playing.”
This one knows that shortbow ranger is bad in dungeons, but plays it anyway because he simply finds it fun. He isn’t deluded about the effectiveness of his build; he just likes it better. This one seems innocent at first and you’re inclined to excuse it, but then you realize the ugly truth: he only cares about his experience and doesnt give a kitten if the build he enjoys playing is a nightmare for everyone else in the party.
Cringe Factor: 5/10
4. “the meta builds are for sheep, my build does 10x more damage than those dumb zerker builds. Celestial does nearly as much direct damage as zerker and the extra condition damage puts the dps over the top. Ofcourse my build is better, look at how fancy the graphics are on my youtube channel.”
No need to mention names, but this is the type of guy who doesn’t actually understand the game or the mechanics or the math behind it, but does understand how to make well-editted youtube videos promoting horribad builds. Inexplicably, this person equates build quality with youtube views. When challenged on their math or game mechanic knowledge, they will revert to one of the other PHYW examples here.
Cringe Factor: 7/10
5. “This is a support build because I like to be supportive to my team, NOT dps.”
This person is a relic of some other MMO where there was such a thing as midline support builds. They subconsciously crave the old school trinity class system because it allows them to safely blend into the background and finish dungeons without their team realizing they aren’t good. In an ironic twist, this was the very same person who was incredibly excited when Anet announced that there would be no trinity in GW2. They mistook the concept of ‘no defined healer or tank roles’ with ‘anything goes and everything will be viable.’
Cringe Factor: 4/10
6. Try Hard Casual Ninja
This person hates hardcore players so much, for some reason that seems impossible to determine, that he goes hardcore in griefing them. most often you encounter them only rarely, like a ghost, usually followed by a cursed shore loading screen. Or as a silent down vote on a youtube speed run video. Like an assassin, they quickly enter your party kick you out of the instance and are gone before you even get their name. They love youtube and reddit downvotes, another way to anonymously express their displeasure of people doing things they disagree with, yet aren’t affected by. Some are misguided white knights who think they are helping the community, others are simple trolls and yet others are people who think they are somehow winning a non-zero sum game by aggressively promoting casual gameplay.
Cringe factor: 10/10

This should be its own thread, and a sticky.
I don’t see how paying someone with in game currency to do content for you is in any way a problem or a ‘real money trade’. With this mindset you would have to completely disable the trade post, as, with it, you’re fundamentally paying someone to farm an item for you. This conversation has no need to go any further, unless Anet would like to enter the realm of double-mindedness.

This answer from the Support Team makes no sense to me. Why would dungeon sellers be considered real money traders when there’s no real money involved? I would take the answer from the Support Team with a grain of salt even though I’m not a big supporter of the whole dungeon selling thing.

I’d Like Facts with Evidence <3Keep your opinion for yourselfs please, it’s not that hard!
The thing is, your e-mail from Support Team is not a fact either nor does it make sense.
That’s your opinion, Which I asked you not to give as it’s not of ANY means contributing to an answer of the very first question.
Once again, Don’t post your opinion!
Hey look, another waste of oxygen. Those hearts alone are a dead giveaway that his only intention is to kitten people off. Humanity is such a disgrace.

Hardest fact I know of.
It is legal to sell dungeons so long as the path was done legitimately. Gaile Grey is an angel of truth.
If we try to get a dev response on anything in the dungeon forum section it is a complete lost cause. It’s a pity someone had to contact support about it.

Forum:
A meeting or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged.
So coming here demanding no opinions is, in itself, an oxymoron. I’ll even let you google that one yourself.
To answer your already answered question, your support ticket response is only relevant if the paths are being bought with real life currency. The use of in game currency is very much allowed so long as people were not kicked in order to free up the slots. This still has nothing to do with the selling of slots, rather griefing people out of their deserved reward. This is not an opinion, this is a fact.
@Dolan,
Thanks That’s exactly what I wanted to hear, you smart mouthing yourself over a player that just wants an straight forwards answer.
I wanna thank Katary and swiftpaw for actually contributing to the question
I’ll update this topic once I have my own support answer back
Here’s a quick recap. Why would you still need word from Anet? The support team may just have confused Dungeon Sellers selling for in game gold with real money.
“Thanks for pointing out that we seemed to have had a bit of miscommunication about offering “runs” as a service in the game. I can tell you that runs are not disallowed if they do not in some other way form a breach of the User Agreement or Rules of Conduct. We consider such an offer a form of a “gentleman’s agreement” where two parties agree to a specific service for an agreed sum in in-game currency (or in-game items, as the parties decide).
Naturally, if the run itself involves the use of an exploit, that service is strictly and fully disallowed. (And of course we want to hear about any exploiters.) Runs for real-world money or goods are, likewise, strictly prohibited. And if the service ends in a disputed situation — for instance, someone offers a run and then leaves the party, or offers to pay and then declines to do so — then we may take action against a scammer, if an agent is able to confirm what took place. But because the service is a gentleman’s agreement, we do not get in the middle of repayments, re-dos of the run, etc.
Thank you for asking about this. I’ve written and circulated an internal e-mail so that all team members are clear about our policy on this.
Regards,
Gaile Gray

Hello,it is allowed, if you have a dungeon (you take as an example Arah) alone or in pairs legally – ie, without skips, exploits, bugs or other illegal means – through play, then sell in-game Lfg tool against gold to player ?
Thanks in advance for the answer.

[11/10/2013 08:57]Hello […]
Thank you’ve turned to the European support team.
There should be no problem, as long as it does not violate the User Agreement, or if you play through the dungeon without exploits or similar.
Should any questions or problems arise, please contact us any time you are available.
Sincerely yours
GM Andi

They obviously do use game breaking mechanics though or boot people since dungeons are impossible to do with less than a full party.

Oh, stop it, you. <3
From another thread that went in a similar direction…
If you think your time is valuable, then it’s in your best interest not to waste it. If you think the time of your party members is valuable, then you also shouldn’t waste it. That means doing dungeons as fast as possible – all dungeons, across the spectrum from CoF p1 in 6 mins to Arah p4 in 30. Doing dungeons in those time-frames necessitates certain professions in strict builds. We call those builds “PvE Metas.”
I dislike wasting my time. I dislike wasting other people’s time. I really, really dislike other people wasting MY time. Therefore, if you’re not in the meta for your profession, go take a hike. Anyone who deliberately wastes his own time AND the time of the people he parties with by not playing efficiently is: 1) incredibly disrespectful to his party members; and 2) a noob. I don’t have time for that, so I won’t play with those people. What I WILL do is provide the resources necessary for those people to escape their noob-dom; in regard to Ele, I wrote a guide to the meta for exactly that purpose, to teach noobs how to play efficiently.
