There is a video floating around You tube of someone using tokens from dungeons to purchase swords and then dropping them into the forge for a precursor. I don’ think its possible but a clan mate is trying to prove me wrong by doing it. Any possibility this is true?

Indeed it is. It is how I got my two precursors. In fact it is the only way I try. I’m trying now to get the staff for a friend.

Run the dungeon, get tokens, buy 4 of the same exotic weapon of the type you desire and toss them in. It isn’ guarenteed to get you a precursor, but is a free way to try plus running he dungeons are profitable themselves.

EDIT: took me 3 tries to get my hammer, and about 6 for Dusk. The chance isn’t any better or worse than any other 4 exotics, its just an inexpensive solution.

Doesn’t sound out of the question. You can use the weapons obtained with badges of honor as Mystic Forge fodder as well, so makes sense that the ones you get using dungeons tokens would follow the same formula. Would just likely require a LOT of grinding because of the random factor in the recipe.

Although, if the guy is just shooting for any precursor in particular, he should be forging the off hand weapons instead, since they’re cheaper to purchase.

Indeed it is, i got The Energizer and Dusk by throwing in AC Shields mixed with AC Focuses (?).

You should also be able to sub one of those weapons with a Mystic Forge Stone if you have some sitting around, though you’ll receive a random weapon type as a result. If you’re not using the MF stones for anything else it’s a nice way to expand the available forge attempts.

I’ve spent possibly close to 10,000 CoF tokens trying to do this. No luck yet, but people have done it so I keep on keeping on…

Hahah oh no no, my sweet summer child. There is no guaranteed recipe for a precursor as of now. Anyone who tells you differently is having a laugh.

As far as I understand, you have a chance at a precursor wherever you can loot/obtain a lvl 80 exotic weapon (since that’s what a precursor is).

When tossing in 4 exotic lvl 80 weapons of the same type into the forge, your result pool is basically all lvl 80 exotic weapons of that type.

As shown here. Unless he just recorded every attempt. This guy makes a point showing you which swords he is using.

He’s just yanking your chain. It’s not guaranteed, and if it was, the prices would’ve crashed ages ago.

If it is guaranteed precusor price won’t be 500. more like 15 gold.

So unless it is some secret recipe no one knows or the guy in the video just got lucky. Many people video everything. No big deal.

works with WvW tokens. I tried 3 time and got 2 sparks in a row that way.

Exotic greatswords are 390 tokens, so four of them equals 1560 tokens total. Most people will just do CoF to get four of those, but any four greatswords will do. Now that I’m finally geared, all my tokens from the various dungeons I enjoy are going to go towards greatswords and I hope I get something better than a pearl greatsword for them xD.

Hmm. Depending on the precursor you are aiming for and the current price of ectos, you could probably run any of the 70+ dungeons, spend the tokens on rares to salvage, and then buy exotics off the forge with the ectos you get. You might be able to get more exotics to throw in than the 4 you get from the dungeon vendor for the same price.

I found thakittens cheaper to make rare pauldrons and break them down for ectos. Then sell for exotics.
