Q:
Dungeons is mostly empty
Ever since HOT came out, everyone was busy doing the new expansion content. That could be a factor. However, for very new players or players without HOT, dungeons is a great way of having fun and getting nice rewards. In my perspective, ANet is simply trying to make players participate in the new expansion, which I understand. But they should have not completely cast aside the dungeons.
New content doesn’t really matter that much. Silverwastes and Fractals are available without HoT. Rewards are equal or better than dungeons and they require a lower amount of commitment. Dungeons are only better if you need the tokens. Even for the tokens sPvP reward tracks are probably a better choice. You don’t need a group and you only need around 10minutes(assuming queue times aren’t too terrible) to make a bit of progress. None of these have daily limits(sPvP reward tracks have daily limits if you are doing it with custom arenas).
Arenanet have stopped developing the dungeons and have essentially decided that FoTM, Raids, and LS content are the way forward. Dungeons have basically had the rewards dropped to discourage players from doing them (that way Anet don’t have to worry about squashing bugs and can divert players to their newer content forms).
It is a massive massive shame. I’d love to see them revamp dungeons a little and make them viable play options.
Anet wants to stop supporting and don’t want people to run dungeons any more. Which has half screwed up people wanting to earn original legendaries.
My opinion is that while I don’t have have an issue with the gold drop being reduced, they really should have increased token reward for completion to compensate for the change.
i still like running dungeon as they are a diversion from the usual 3 swamps in fractal for better loot. and honestly it’s a shame, i would like an alternative to fractals from time to time. in my opinion there was no need to nerf dungeon reward. there should be plenty of content for everybody in an healthy game, not tube in map where the loot is best per hour

While I agree with you about SW and Fractals giving better rewards, but the content is very repetitive. There isn’t any new islands in fractals, however the higher you go up the level, it get progressively harder (makes it more fun) and is compensated with better rewards.
For SW, it is the same thing over again: Go around chest train, defend the forts, wait until map is 100%, defeat mordrem boss. Get good rewards and loot.
I have only been doing sPVP to get the dungeon tokens and armours currently. So in one reward track, you can only get 180 tokens, 3 weapon chest and armour chest. Reward wise, it’s great as you mentioned. But I can seriously boost the amount of tokens if I did the dungeons. If I managed to do all paths in one dungeon, you can get a total amount of 240 tokens.
On the other hand, there are a handful of players who doesn’t like doing PVP, so what are they going to do? A quote from another player on HOT Economy forum: “Players who enjoy playing dungeons will have either lower income or will have to play content they do not enjoy as much in order to maintain their existing level of income.”

This comes up pretty often. Don’t hesitate to make your own listings though. I always do and the party is usually full in 5 – 10 minutes. Sometimes we just 3 or 4 man the paths where that is possible if necessary.

Sink or swim, man. Gathering is mind numbingly dull, but extremely lucrative. Every day I run two or three toons to rich ore nodes and chop wood along the way. It’s not much fun, but worth a solid 100g a week at least.

@OP: You have to go deeper (to search for and read all the threads about abandoned dungeons). It’s an old theme and goes back to almost at the beginning of HoT.
Seriously, it’s an excuse that anet claim to balance the rewards in dungeon. Look at silverwaste meta, I’d rather do dungeons rather than kitten around silverwaste.
