Exploits and bugs in fractals
wait, how is that bugs or exploits? isn’t that more like you’re using the pillars as a shield, more like a tactic?
That’s exactly what it is. People just like to throw around the word exploit on these forums the same way Bioware made people throw around the world entitled.
The words “tactic” vs. “exploit” are not as cut-and-dry as people like to think. The line is nebulous and has a lot to do with severity and intent. You can see in long-lived MMOs like EQ that, over time, some “exploits” become moulded into tactics by the playerbase and eventually utterly incorporated into legitimate gameplay. Kiting, for instance, was once in that nebulous realm between legitimate tactic and mechanics exploit.
The important thing is for people to not get up-in-arms about someone labeling something an “exploit”. Too many people see it as a statement of “you are cheating and should be punished”, when really they are questioning whether that particular tactic is balanced and should really exist.
I was actually in a group last night that jumped down my throat for not know a particular exploit in the colossus fractal. considering how they acted I’m honestly surprised I wasn’t kicked. After that I attempted to learn the exploits on the fly with them but I found myself constantly ruining the exploits since I didn’t know about most of them. The exploit only being explained after I did it wrong, of course by “explained” I mean caps lock, name calling, and profanity.
What I didn’t get though was we wiped a single time and completed the daily in under an hour easily. It was a completely smooth run even when the exploits didn’t work (thanks to me screwing something up). They were a competent group completely able to complete the dungeon normally and good players. Even recovering well from multiple bad situations, we didn’t in any way need the exploits but they were still considered mandatory for the run. Some of them actually made the run take longer than it would have been if we just jumped down and fought the bad guy.
It’s almost like if the exploit exists you must use it no matter need it, it slows you down, has high risk to reward ratio or whatever reason or you are a “noob”

Feign Death was another big one. Was originally intended to allow monks to drop agro similar to rouges ability to hide mid-combat. Then people began to split with it and a new game mechanic that defined the way class was played. Something that directly changed the role of the entire class.
Most exploits speed up the dungeon run or minimize deaths, no matter which way you look at it. If they did not they wouldn’t be used (why take longer and have a higher risk of death?). If dungeons were all underwater length and they fixed the exploits I don’t think many would mind, but the ones people exploit the most on are /shock the more longer drawn out fractals (Dredge/Cliffside for instance).

This is getting ridiculous now, ive lost copuntof the groups I( have beebn kicked from for standing my ground and NOT cheating my way through these fractals.. Something needs tro be done and FAST.....
Tis only what you can do for all
@Jezath: then go find a guild or a group that will do things your way. Yes, people are telling you either their way or the high way. But pretty on the same token you’re telling them it’s your way or the highway.
Samething with people want to fight Kholer, go find a group that want to fight him. The group is not forcing you not to fight him any more than you forcing them to fight.
When I want to run thing a specific way, I make a guild group. When I pug, I go with whatever the group decide, remember it’s an MMO where you play with 4 other people, it’s not just about you.
Since we can’t discuss on this topic about the 2 real issues of Fractals (Dc-rejoin and Time investements on findind a group) tied more on the general design of the dungeon.
I have one big question unresolved: How much time is required in the “Devs” mind to complete a Fractal of average level (5-10-15-20-25….) by an average group often composed by pugs???
I ask that because sinche the last buff to the dungeon mobs an “average” Run was 1h-1h:30m… And before that buff that pushed the complete time to 2h 2:30 I rarely met someone asking to exploit something to make the run quicker….
I feel like the exploits abusing is in a first place an answer to how bad balanced and time consuming is the Fotm in his totality.
Eternal Looking for group time (aw c’mon addressing a third part website to resolve the issue is just ridicolous)
Dc issues wasting every effort and time invested (my curse to you still running)
Comunity fragmentation
Tons of consuming time bugs along all the istances
now buffing mobs number-toughness-damage….
I like the agony concept i don’t like to run the same fract level the day after and find twice the mobs 3 shotting the party….. at least put some effort on comunicating better the “fix” you apply or just say Fotm still in betatest enjoy at your own risk.
(edited by Deu.1852)
I won’t be initiating exploits but if my group really want to use them I won’t bother to complain except if it takes longer than the normal way. Knowing you can get dc and not be able to get back in the fractals make me tolerant towards some exploits which make you save time even if I don’t really like it.
But some exploits are just plain stupid and useless and only make up for a lack of skill or team play.
For example, the ettin one. One time I had my group who wanted to do it, imo it makes things slower so they agreed to not do it. What was my surprise when I saw our group wipe because of bad focus on mobs and not helping people who were downed. The one who wanted to do the exploit kicked me cause it was “my fault”. I told him what went wrong and it had nothing to do with using an exploit or not but just not playing as a team. Other in the group wanted me back so we started again and managed to finish the lvl.
Today, one wanted to do the exploit on the first boss in the colossus fractal. I find this one plain useless too as this boss isn’t difficult and you won’t really save time as melee have to go range and may not dps as much. Result was the dongeon was bugged, we had already finished one fractal so we had to start everything again. Needless to say people were pissed off and rage quited.
I had someone in my group do the ettin one today and he managed to bug him into his cellar making it more difficult and longer than it’s supposed to be.
I really hope all these exploits are gonna get fixed soon.
As for skipping mobs. It’s not an exploit imo and if they wanted to fix this, they should just make the mob not reset aggro when you get far enough in dungeon and that’s it.
I just came across a new one.
Lava Fractal – If you are looting the chest that spawns for saving the captives during the shaman fight, and the cutscene of him jumping off occurs, you will be stuck on whatever weapon set you had equipped. You can not swap weapons, you can not change weapons in the current slot. Getting downed and even death does not fix it.

Have you tried changing weapons manually on the hero panel? (like put another weapon on the set you’re using)
I had this bug once and this resolved it.

Tried that, didn’t work. It fixed itself after we finished the Fractal and moved on to the next one though.

The bug that happened to me is kinda hard to explain since i don’t know exactly why it happened but i’ll try anyways.
We completed the ice fractal as the 3rd and i was jumping around at/on the walls of the bossroom(guess this caused it?) as we got teleportet into the jade maw fractal. As my loading screen finished I saw myself standing inside the jade maw fractal and the next second a new loading screen appeared that brought me back to the, already completed, ice fractal.
I could reunite with my group with the checkpoint at the start of the jade maw fractal (there were still mobs at the big bonfire), but i can imagine it to be quite annoying if you cant manage to die.
With people talking about the asura fractal, it’s not only that you can use the pillars to LoS (which clearly seems fine), its the fact that if you pull the golems far enough out, the asura will stupidly run back and forth between the ‘too far past pillars’ and his center spawn point, very rarely even bothing to attack anyone in the process, which is clearly not intended to completely avoid him even casting his attack.
Now on the other hand, maps like Ascolinian is an open map, it’s a battlefield that I can navigate to my objective, why is it considered an exploit? Because it’s something you don’t want to do? I’m asking this since last week when I pug a group and we got it, everyone start hubbing the wall immidiately and no-one said anything.
You haven’t seen the real exploit. If you have a mesmer in the group, there’s a path on the right side of the starting area that takes you up to a point where a mesmer can teleport on top of the wall (clipping/teleport exploit), then use the mesmer portal to bring the rest of the group up with him. There is a similar path on the left side. You can bypass the front gate and its guard entirely.
Running up the stairs on the wall on the left side once you get through the gate and skipping the barricade requires careful jumping but nothing more.
There is also a way for rogues to get behind the gate too and simply solo the gate / dulfy through the gate while the rest of the team can sit at the start and wait. Not 100% sure on how they get there (as i’m not a rogue), but its definitely not mesmer only
Skipping past mobs if u r able is not an exploit i agree(jumping over the wall in ascalon is exploit, running past mobs isent), but the others... It really upsets me that this game has turned out to be one for cheaters and not good honest players like myself. Why else would i get kicked from groups for not willing to cheat with them.. I always say it before i join the group and always on the third fractal they cheat and i get kicked with no reward for all my efforts..
Also I am utterly shocked that a dev would post all the eexploits on the forums. This problem has increased multifold since this thread has started..
I have even come across players that dont know how to complete some of the paths without using the exploits.. This astounded me...
For myself the fixes just cannot come fast enough... This has truly shown me the ugly side of human nature and i have hardly played much since this started happening to me..

It is a game. Were not bank robbing and taking an old grannies life savings. It is a game. Also it is because of posts like yours the devs have no clue where real attention needs work.
Yes its a game... Thanks for that little nugget of wisdom you felt applicable to bestow upon me
Contrary to popular beleif the devs read all posts... Whats the matter? scared of losing your exploit?

What part of “We’re mad that anet’s too busy nerfing everything than fixing gamebreaking bugs” don’t you get?
the part where you try to derail this thread perhaps? Thats also your opinion dont try to put words in others mouths.
Tis only what you can do for all
Watching people like Jezath white knighting developers for spending more time on bugs/workarounds/exploits that do not benefit anyone in any way but time spent, while leaving serious flaws, amazes me. Probably i should also get reported for spending over an hour kiting Champion to Pact location in order to unbug Temple of Balthazar chain of events? Due to life commitments i have a very limited time to play this game hence saving a little bit of it for something i enjoy doing is completely reasonable. And i DO NOT enjoy fighting my way through dredge fractal at all. That place is a long, daunting, mind-numbing & uninteresting waste of time.
I’m always the one who asks party members when group forms up if everyone is ok with skipping certain sequences and most of the time i have zero disagreements. However, when it happens, it is just a matter of 2 seconds: kick and move on.
(edited by Morpurgo.6371)
@Morpurgo
I highly doubt those people actually play the game or they do not play the rougher dungeons. Or else they would feel the pain of repair bills and no drops on a “minimal” grind game. They are the ones that spread ideas like the “70+” things to do in GW2 that had such momentousness ideals like “try to outrun a centaur”. In another thread a guy flat out said he would rather have new content than working content. Really? Those people are the reason MMO’s flop.
Yes after nearly 200 fractal runs making them longer with NO benefit to us (fixing HORRID RNG system, which is easy as pie) makes us a little ticked off.
(edited by Dead.7385)
im by no means a white knight and theres also no need to project onto me the ossible failure of mmo. There asre things i dissagree with and I have a right to my opinion just as you do. Just because i do not beleive in the same way does not make my points any less valid than yours.

I’ve been a fan of FotM since i first started with it, but since the fix for the colossus fractal it is quite annoying – not because that bossfight now takes longer, but because with that premature fix other bugs got implemented, having caused me several wipes just for the purpose of trying to reset the boss now, 2* taking ages and 1* just making our frac run end right away, since half of us just quitted after some tries…
What I’m speaking of:
- sometimes the boss spawns no minions after dropping the hammer, sometimes he drops infinite minions
- if you bring the hammer with you there is now 2 hammers, one of them seemingly not working
- seal status and boss hp no longer seems to be connected, mainly the boss being already down, seal on half hp or more sometimes… the boss will start refilling hp, but the bugs of not spawning and stuff will just go on
- on my last run the seal was clearly down, no hp left, we tried progressing for a long time, 2 quitted already – then we found out we just had to jump in front of the seal and then hit it with 1 normal attack – really, what the…?
Please please deactivate that fractal until it’s fixed or work on a fix at least – the way it is now I’m really losing my interest in fractals, it’s no fun at all to spend like 30 minutes just on trying to bypass some stupid bugs.
So far you got these points:
1. “Everyone must play like I do”
2. “No fun allowed”
3. “Anet is infallible and criticizing it is tantamount to killing puppies and eating babies”.
- seal status and boss hp no longer seems to be connected, mainly the boss being already down, seal on half hp or more sometimes… the boss will start refilling hp, but the bugs of not spawning and stuff will just go on
Pretty sure this has been the case before the patch. I remember doing the boss the normal way many times and if the seal wasn’t destroyed, the boss would regen health.
It is becoming almost impossible to run fractals without having to put up with exploiters/hackers/bugabusers on my team. When it gets to the level of people walking through walls (like the increasingly popular dredge fractal exploit) it just starts to become ridiculous.
I’m often having to leave groups because of this, since I like actually playing the game instead of just bugging everything. I have also started to report people seriously abusing obvious bugs (like the dredge fractal walking-through-walls bs). However it seems that anet does not care at all – these kinds of bug should be hotfixed not left in the game for weeks. Soon it will be the case that I wont be able to run fractals anymore because I will just get kicked for not exploiting.
Fix this Anet!
A righteous man I see, who wants to extend his righteousness to other people as well. Dude, we humble folks are just here having some fun after a long day of work, we really don’t want to be banned by saints for how we played and we would really hate if someone rage quits just for us skipping some time consuming but pointless trash. As a matter of fact, if someone rage quits for whatever reason after a 2 hour fractal run, s/he is guaranteed into my perm ban list. But you seemed to care more about your righteousness in playing. Why don’t you spare the live of iceman boss in dredge fractals since he seems innocent to me and he killed the dredge powersuit? Why don’t you join your ‘kill everything’ zombie and pretend to have fun running the same map, same routine over and over again, all by yourself?
Please go somewhere else with your political correctness in game play. There are more important and annoying bugs to be fixed than your self esteem. After all, to be rewarded with a chest or some loot after a 2.5 h dungeon run is critical to us average players but now you are urging anet to fix the shortcuts in dungeon and make it into a 4 hour run without fixing the dc and other problems that f*rt to us everyday? You must not be human? Do you live in Arah?
And again, kitten your political correctness in MMO.
im by no means a white knight and theres also no need to project onto me the ossible failure of mmo. There asre things i dissagree with and I have a right to my opinion just as you do. Just because i do not beleive in the same way does not make my points any less valid than yours.
I agree with you that there is no point in blaming somebody personally right now. But I do understand a lot of people’s anger today. The fractals, good as they may be, still have a lot of issues that hinder progress (you see the impressive list on page one.) In contradiction to those, there were relatively few, which actually made going through the fractals easier (some of them still there, like jumping the wall in Ascalon.)
I think what’s upsetting people right now is that yesterday’s patch prioritized fixing exploits (wich introduced new bugs) over fixing bugs. I’m totally with you that these exploits should be fixed evetually, but it should have been made sure that the rest of the fractals run smoothly first. The way it is done now, it’s going to put many people off the fractals and who knows how many of those will return?
2 bugs, I just found 2 days ago:
-After finishing the Ascalon fractal, our team was still transformed into Charrs, we were in the Dredge fractals and we were not able to pick up the Bombs to break the door, forcing us into resetting the run.
-The Ice fractal, there is an Ice condition right? when we killed the Elemental and ran through the forest to fight the Boss, I forgot to stay next to a bonfire to remove the Ice condition, when fighting with the Boss I still had the condition and worst, I had the condition still in the next fractal (swamp), I tried everything, even dying, and the condition was still there making me useless to run in the swamp. Lucky, the condition was removed when entering water just before the boss fight in the swamp. But what if the next fractal didn’t have water?
I don’t know how to reproduce these bugs, it only happened once (in different runs).

Me neither, I was not able to reproduce this, I don’t have a clue why this happened, it was only once out of 30 runs.

.
I had this one once and the next fractal was cliffside (which has no water) and the effect was taken off me after a few moments – probably because there are torches standing around at the beginning, not sure though.
(edited by CorneliusCoffin.3169)
Cliffside is so broken now it’s not even funny. Right now, if anyone gets it, you either spend a long time just trying to get through it, or you don’t play it at all. That infinite mob spawn is really bad, and they follow you all the way to the beginning the of the hallway where the firecracker ramps are. I don’t plan on running Fractals until that’s taken care of. It’s just too risky to have that as the last Fractals. The issue is not whether you leave the first group of chanter mobs alive or not as a work around, but simply the crazy endless spawning mobs that won’t go away once you hit the seal
I don’t know if anyone has noticed this but in the underwaterlevel, where the Krait is usually stuck in the ceiling, there is a hole in the ceiling that lets you step out of the fractal entirely. I don’t really think it can be used as an exploit, since there’s no other way to get back into the fractal, but it gives you and interesting look at the fractals from the outside. There is for instance a small scaled version of the giant from the cliffside fractal standing beneath the main hub.
Be warned though, don’t go there when you’re actively doing the fractals as you may fall into water holes there’s no escaping from (which is particularly emberassing if the whole group wipes and you can’t reset and everyone has to restart the fractals all over.)
EDIT: Upon checking the area out again, the guy under the main hub seems to have vanished with yesterday’s update.

Someone already reported that and said you can go from there to the ascalon fractals. Once you get close enough, the Charr NPC will start following you even into the next fractal where they’ll give you a hand (they cannot attack underwater)

I saw Ascalon, didn’t see the NPCs though. I was also able to make out the swamps, the ice fractal and the dwarve fractal. The jade sea fractal was somewhere in the air and you were able to make it out because there was “Jade Kraken” written into the grass, when standing under it, same goes for the main hub, where “HUB” is written on the ground.
To be fair this might actually be exploitable in some way or other, I didn’t really look for exploits as I was far to interested in just exploring the area.
Speaking of the Asura fractal, I don’t get why Harpies have a knockback – it does make the ascent challenging in that it’s annoying as hell. Add more harpies, make the harpies hit harder? I don’t understand design concepts like this where it seems the developers goal is to piss off the people fighting in the dungeon.
It is NOT fun to get knocked down – it is NOT fun to lose all control of your character constantly via knock backs, drags, knockdowns.
@Lothair
I don’t think knockback is the culprit here. But the way the platforms are designed is. You can’t dodge roll on them to evade, and the only real way of evading is jumping from one platform to another before it hits. It makes the dungeon pad out as if your jumping you aren’t DPSing.
I can see both sides though, my brother REALLY hates it and I don’t really mind it since at least it doesn’t kill you…….well unless it bugs out and kills you.
With enough practice you can jump evade the knockback so that’s just a skill problem in the long run. The main problem is sometime you can not see it coming because the red circle appear outside the platform. And it’s not a problem with just this map, for example when you fight the tree in Swarm, you have to stay around the dry area to see his circle, if you stay in the water area most of the time you won’t see it.
They need to change the AOE area to something like a light shade instead of just the paremeter.
Strafe back and forth while killing harpies… there you go.
Like any projectile, they go to where they think you will be while moving. For small platforms, this means they miss the platform.
Something so simple yet everyone has to QQ because they think everything is too hard while standing still and auto attacking.
https://www.youtube.com/user/strife025
Except it’s an AOE and can cover the entire platform. Except like I said on some platform you can not even see it’s coming due to the red circle doesn’t appear due to the size of the platform. Except it can be targeting someone else on another platform and spill overs to yours.
FYI, I have no problem with this since we run a very tight group, usually with people rotating stability and reflection. But that doesn’t change the flaw with the warning rendering.
Oh and a bit of advise for you: advise can be offered in good will, I don’t understand why some people seem to think the best way to offer hint and tip is to insult others when doing it.

More often than not is that complaining comes in the form of “I’m really a good player, there fore if i find it impossible or too hard, do something about it because in reality i actually am not as good as i think i am but have trouble accepting this”

Yes I know it’s an AoE… it explodes on solid ground. Since the platform is so small, when you are strafing it targets an area in the open sky which causes it to miss and not explode.
Sure it does involve everyone strafing since if it targets someone standing still you’ll be hit, but the point is if everyone strafes back and forth it misses.
I do it all the time in my group, it’s not that hard. Then of course you have stability or reflect skills as backup in the rare instance it does hit solid ground.
It’s a hell of a lot better then standing still and auto attacking since the knockback will miss you 95% of the time while strafing vs hitting you 100% of the time while standing still. You can do it in conjunction with other skills, it’s not like it’s one or the other.
https://www.youtube.com/user/strife025
The only problem I have with the harpies is that they are able to spawn-camp players, making it very frustrating for a team to recover when some people fall down and go back to spawn.
And I’m going to take a break from this game until ArenaNet can put Fractals back into a acceptable state (maybe closer as it was before the recent “fixes”). I don’t plan on wasting my time on bugged out kittens, I have better things to do. Like ranting on the forums…
There was a necro in my party that was able to purposefully bug out the Archdiviner multiple times in the Cliffside fractal. He was using minions and, by doing something (I’m not sure what), he could get the boss to not do any attacks. He could do it at the beginning of the fractal as well as at the end with the final seal. The boss would run around a bit, but not do much. He said, “Just don’t fear the boss,” because fearing would break the effect.
I don’t know if was me, but i still have fun fooling people my minions are some kind of magic special creatures able to do amazing things hahahaa
The next quote explain the bug, minions are not involved at all
- Collussus First boss fight; use 1200 range for an easy win. Boss won’t aggro
