Fractal Profession opinion wanted.
if you choose not what you want, but what others tell you – you are gonna have a bad time
hi there,
in my opinion you should use your mesmer, you will never be kicked because mesmers are the most useful classes in the game. They can port, use stealth etc. Mesmer would definitely be my first choice.

Well, I don’t care which class I play, they all have their pros and cons.

Mesmer is pretty useless in Fractals tbh, and of the professions he posted, would be quite low on my list. It has it’s uses, but other than being a Reflections + Timewarp bot, it’s pretty limited in it’s uses, especially since the DPS is very situational.
Elementalist:
Huge damage if played right (I’d recommend one of Zelyhn’s builds). Personally, I use 0/30/10/20/10 in Fractals, because I usually run with enough warriors to get 100% Fury uptime, and also because 30/30/0/0/10 makes you so squishy it’s not even funny anymore. I died to one hit of one of the skelks in Swamp for example… And I didn’t even see the little kitten coming…
Pro’s:
- High DPS (highest in game if you take LH, but I don’t like it)
- Perma AoE blind for trash mobs (glyph of storms)
- Nice utility: fire fields, AoE stun, Chill, Blast Finishers, condi removal (depending on traits/weapons), condition destruction, …
Con’s:
- Squishiest motherf****** in town
Thief:
Also pretty useful, hits really hard, but is hard to play as well. I don’t know much about a thief, some people hail it, some people hate it, I don’t know who to believe. It most certainly has it’s uses in Fractals, but there are better options out there.
Warrior:
Safe bet. Always high DPS, good team utility (Fury, Banners, Might), never be frowned upon. There aren’t many cons to a warrior except for that if you run without decent guardians that know how to blind stuff and reflect, you’d be better off running the elementalist.

Which makes it not so safe of a bet at all.
Yet what’s said of other classes is very true. Mesmer is mostly a feedback/mimic bot, Elementalist posesses one of the highest dps values available yet offers a plenty of versatile utility, thiefs have less general utility but can use stealth.
Warriors provide fury/banners and hope to get carried.
Safest bet would be a guardian in my personal opinion, but you didn’t list one.
Mesmer is god tier with the right fractal rolls and mimic.
Don’t feel bad that you didn’t get to join the party that kicked you because you were playing an elementalist. It’s obviously not a very good player, because if he were he’d knew that profession really doesn’t matter. You’d have to make up for his lack of skill that run. Good riddance I’d say.
Warrior is a good safe choice, and so is ele if you can get use to how squishy they are. You can then swap to thief for stealthing on dredge if your group needs it. Also mesmer can be used as mimic bot. All 4 classes you listed can be useful so you may aswell just pick one you prefer on jade maw and use that most of the time. And swap to whatever you need.
For pugging any class will do well so long as you understand the class and the fractals.
That said, with out enough projectile defense certain fractals will become painful (grawl shaman boss for instance). Of the ones you listed Ele, Thief and Mesmer all have great options on this end.
Anyway pros and cons:
Ele
see what Bright said
Thief
Pros:
- Spammable blind fields for trash pulls.
- Stealth for skipping mobs/performing content
- very good single target DPS
Cons:
- Without a fire field cannot help much with party buffing
- Also quite Squishy
Mesmer
Pros:
- Ability to steal one of mossman’s axes for a potential insta kill on the next level
- plenty of reflects (trait your focus)
- Alot more survivability with vigor on crits and blurred frenzy
Cons:
- Low DPS except for the rare case when your phantasms get left alone
- Both SoI and TW rely on your allies sharing buffs/having DPS to be useful
Warrior
Pros:
- Decent DPS
- Plenty of party buffs
- Good health pool + heavy armor = great defense even with berserker
- Having multiple isn’t a bad thing (not so much with the other classes)
Cons:
- no reflects
In any case, you really shouldn’t have too many problems with those four classes. While I have seen pugs advertising “heavies only” most of the class dislike is still directed at engi/necro/ranger.

Warrior. There are a lot of sophisticated answers but the simple truth is that they are just the best PVE class, only surpassed by guardians in high fractals. Class balance essentially doesn’t exist. Thieves for example can be great in some fractals but just horrid in others.
If you’re in a guild group or ogranized group that plays together regularly, I think having 1 ele or 1 thief would be fine, along with a mesmer and guard.
If you’re pugging, your best bet is to go guardian or warrior. You can go mesmer, but honestly I think 2 mesmers is worse than 2 guards or 2 wars. (in most situations)

Well I did some FotM 40+ with 2 mesmers and it went just fine, but it was with an organised group (or semi organised) ^^’. So yeah with pugs, your best bet is guardian or warrior.

Don’t fall for his bait. He’s gotten better, so it’s hard to tell sometimes. He’s evolved from dumpster dumby to MLG troll.
You mean that he is now a malicious sith lord?

It’s funny how people keep parroting mesmers are reflections/timewarp bots but they don’t call bots all the rest of the classes when they also have very defined roles based of a few skills.
Difference is mesmer has very situational dps. Due to clones dieing. So if you dont need the utility they are a really bad choice to take. Whereas other classes can atleast provide decent dps at all times.

Indeed, even my druid provides great dps.

Many people in higher fractals are stuck with “heavies only” mentality, so elementalist and thief are often looked upon with caution, warrior and mesmer(because of utilities) would be the safer way to go, if you’re planning to run with pugs mainly.
Looking as you’re bored of warrior and thief, I would suggest to try out mesmer – getting through lower level fractals will be a good opportunity to learn the character better.

I have something in mind but I cannot use header tags and increased font size.
Thief:
- Urban(8/10): incredibly trivial with one, can blindspam/pull all the trash packs on the way to the boss (stack behind houses to stack them up), average for the boss, can help a lot with rezzing and cripples.
- Uncategorized(6/10): can stealth through all the harpies; pull all the golems together and blindspam them.
- Volcano(7/10): 3rd/4th best profession (guard > mes > skilled thief = average elementalist) for this fractal, has a lot of cripple and CC for the first 2 parts, and has Smoke Screen and Shadow Refuge, AoE spam for the final boss (and also possibly Smoke Screen on downed trait).
- Snowblind(6/10): convenient here, it can solo the bonfire part and blindspam the trash at the elemental; not too useful for the final boss though.
- Underwater(2/10): awful, the ranged options and usable signets are all terrible, no access to blindspam or stealth
- Dredge(9/10): obvious, very good for all parts of this fract (can even Basilisk the heal of the final bosses when they don’t have the aura!)
- Swamp(7/10): good for running the wisps, and fairly good for Bloomhunger because of Smoke Screen and high melee DPS; not great at Mossman though
- Cliffside(8/10): a skilled thief is incredibly good here, all the seal fights become trivial because of blindspam (at higher levels you could get crit for 3-6k), and it’s a lot easier to deal with the final boss’s adds too.
- Maw(7/10): Blindspam and teleports combined with Shadow Refuge are very useful here.
Overall: ~6.5 -great to have a skilled one, but not recommended to have more than one or a pug, most random thieves don’t know the tricks that would make them decent in fractals.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
Honestly, I think I’m going to stay with my mesmer. They are the most fun and useful of all the classes I listed.
Like I said, they will all eventually have 55 AR, I just needed advice on which one to main and get 55 AR first (since the last 10 AR from laurels/Guild Commendations seems to be longest time gated part for me),
Thanks again!
i posted in the wrong thread >.> …
Well mesmer is way more useful that they say:
Mesmer is situational…..fortunately has a trick for each single fractal except maybe ascalon….
Also pug parties likes mesmers ……
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.
