The harpies man. Now i just made the anti melee post so you can see i know at least a bit about instances so feel free to skip the noob talk.

Anyone got a good and fast way to do them? Especially with randoms? I almost always have 2 randoms in group and.. it takes so much time to kill them all you know? Anyone using a good tactic to skip those?

I have a mesmer in group no thief thou. (Invis purposes.) Just lookin for advices like the gnarl start area where you run on top where the boulders come so gnarls come in a single way. Since i learnt that that start is so easy with randoms.. looking for something similar if there is any.

Lots of reflects is all I can really suggest. Guardian wall, feedback bubble/traited mesmer, traited shield warrior, Ele/engi magnetic shield, etc.

Stace (Lv 80 human quickness portal bot) | Sarcasmic (Lv 80 elixir-drunk norn pyro)
Saladtha (Lv 80 salad sidekick to bears) | Dunelle (Lv 80 eviscerating muppet)
Karmell (Lv 80 human might dispenser) | Vast says hi~.

I generally kill the first couple using ranged, then skip the rest with swiftness on. Their knockback is AoE, so it’s reasonably easy to avoid just by jumping to the next platform.

Also condition removal helps for cripple.

Yeah lots of reflects, but sometimes I stay at the starting area position, right click mouse and change camera to look up and target the nearest harpy. Range attack and change camera position to look more at your floor – this will give you a better view of the red ring appearing on the ground to avoid the knockback energy missiles.

I can range most harpies from the starting area position.

You can try invisibility —> stability. I was trying it with another Mesmer and it didn’t work due to timing and cooldowns, but it was worth a shot.

Swiftness + thief stealth can probably get you through most of them without much hassle. Running with stability is another option.

Probably part of the group that says that not killing even one mob is considered exploiting the game and should be banned.

If there is a faster way people will start using it even if not at first. Why you think all the people step on grasses and the edge of road? saving 2 seconds tops thats why!

On topic: So far i could only think killing first 3 harpies on 1st jump and first 2 on 2nd jump then mass invis the way with projectile reflect of mesmer on last mob.

Anyone got a better idea? With thief i suspect you can pretty much stealth all group from start to end but i do not have a thief in group

If you get enough damage on them (harpies) they will go down pretty fast. The key is to keep the group moving quickly together, so they are all doing damage at the same time. It’s no good if people are jumping along by themselves and you get one trying to skip past, and the rest are fighting, then one guy is downed in the back because he fell. Keep everyone together.

I play my mesmer a lot in fractals. Phantasmal Warden and Feedback will do the trick against harpies. For melee you might try a variation of retaliation boon with block activated, or something similar.

Understand.. but that is really off topic mate. And a sidenote i get randoms that either listen or already know what to do more than i get people that can ruin a run.

Seriously, strafe left and right in very rapid succession. Because the AI tries to “lead” its target, if you rapidly switch directions, no projectiles will hit you.

(Note this also works on the grawl final boss. I’ve solo tanked him for several minutes while the one remaining person went around and ressed everyone else that had died.)

yea i can solo range dps that boss as well.. will try that on the harpies althou.. you sure their knockback is not ground targeted but targeted where you might be in x seconds ?

Don’t jump while the one you are fighting is shooting or it will slow you and make you fall. Just range dps them and hop the platforms as you kill each one.

Lol you sure you want to skip them in a PUG?
That’s like expecting a PUG to kill Lupicus without anyone getting downed / killed.
You’ll be better off just killing them using reflects and stability. Skipping them is just begging to throw away a few hours for nothing. There’ll always be those guys getting unlucky and get knocked down by AoE. Or get crippled in mid-air. Or having lag issues that lead to their death. Or falling down and ending up dead instead of downed (common bug there), and you’ll be forced to go back to him to res him up.

I don’t like skpping mobs. Not only because you miss out precious loot but also because it tends to go wrong and ends up costing you twice the regular time.

The best I’ve seen thus far has been to rotate various absord/reflect abilities.

A Thief Smoke Screen for example will absorb all of the projectiles.

A Guardian Wall and bubble will do the same.

A Thief Daggerstorm even reflects many of the projectiles.

Other professions should have similar tools as well. It will still take time to blast your way through them but at least it should be fairly safe.

My frustration is just how many harpies there are close together. You can’t fight just one or two – there’s always 4+ which target you all at once. It’s not impossible to jump several times to avoid the ball lightning, only to get hit by yet another one. Or, you can be dodging a barrage of 2-3 balls only to fall off because the 4th harpy snares you just before you jump.

I’d even be fine if the harpies had double the HP and double the damage if it would mean there were half as many.

all i can say is, “target is INVULNERABLE”, very annoying even tho they can hit u…

Is it really that hard?

The AOE is centered on a player.

Step 1: halve the area effected by AOE
look at the platform your on, find the 2 edges that have the greatest distance between them, then stand on one edge of the platform, so the AOE diameter only covers half of it and then move over to the opposite edge.

Never ever stand in the middle of platforms.

Kill the first 2. Then go back to spawn and AoE the rest from below. You need 1 to keep running to the harpies in order to not let them get invul.

Or just use reflect skills.

The only valid way is to get as much stability/reflect skills as you can before engaging combat (you can’t change skill in combat). Then if you look closely they are grouped in small pack of 3 to 4, and you should be able with your group to go from a pack to an other and wait for your stability cd to go up in between each pack of mobs.

The rest of the pseudo techniques are just not very valid, like the theory saying they center your character and if you stay at the border of the platform blabla, this is all bs tricks, they center at your feet anyway. Use reflect and stability, especially if you have 2 or 3 melee guy in your goup, that should be enough to take them down fast before your stability wear out.

PS you can also use ranged pet to distract them and pull agro away from your group.
