I’ve been reading a ton of posts since its slow during the holidays at work. I’m a new player to gw2. I took advantage of the sale and jumped in.

From what I’m reading the only professions I should bother with are Warrior, Guardian, or Elementalist if I want to do high level dungeon running. How valid is this information?

Not very valid. Mesmers are excellent, probably one of the top ranged DPS. Their Timewrap elite makes short work of most bosses. Etheral Combo fields are probably the best offensive fields in the game. Generally, Mesmers bring the most DPS to the group since they have very high DPS on their own yet give and grant great offensive buffs.

Necromancers, while still having a lot of broken things, are still in my opinion the best AoE damage class, on top of that they have a lot of blind and are quiet tanky.

Now, engineers can do fine since they have decent damage and survivability, but they really do not excell at anything compared to those 5 classes mentioned.

Rangers and Thiefs are a bit of burden since they are quiet squishy and will die a lot…though a good thief can also do great with their blinds, using invisbility for rezzing downed people and high damage single target skills.

So, all classes bring something…Warriors and Guardians are still the kings of dungeons. Mesmers and Ele’s come after. And Necros come at 3rd place (but mainly because I don’t see many necros so it is hard to judge…but when I play mine my AoE’s burn through groups so fast).

Engineers are broken.

Rangers are a burden.

Thieves can be good if built right for PvE and played right for PvE. Otherwise they can also be a burden.

Absolutely not true. The truth is this.
Warrior = Easiest class to make Attack (Good For DGNS)
Guardian = Easiest make Defense (good for DGNS)
Elementalist = Easiest To Support (good for DGNS)

All the other Classes in the game can be just as powerful as the others they are just not as easy. to use.

For example an elementalist using two daggers has two knock downs, Cripples, Burns, Slows. sounds powerful.

A thief with two daggers can…oh yeah go invisable every 4 seconds (cannot be targeted)….and hits a crit and conditions every time it attacks while invisible.

A ranger with a sword Dodges alot, Cripples, Poisons and bleads, Add a Torch in there and they do alot of burn.

Warriors with two swords do alot of bleed. ETC.

In other words. there is no BEST class. There Easy classes and then there are hard classes.

Pretty much this. The general impression of effectiveness the community gets from each profession is mostly due to how hard, on average, it is to play that profession effectively. A larger portion of rangers, for instance, are going to struggle more than warriors to achieve the same goals, but it isn’t because rangers aren’t as powerful, it is because the same results are easier to achieve with some professions.

Warrior = Highest DPS class
Guardian = Provides massive support utility and defensive support
Mesmer = Further amplifies party DPS + Very strong support skills

Every other class is good in itself, but these are the top tier classes for the best of the best optimal dungeon runners.

Pro Warrior > Pro Ranger
Pro Ranger > Noob warrior
Noob warrior > Noob ranger

Anyone else who thinks otherwise doesnt know how to min max optimally.

T1: Warrior, Guardian, Mesmer
T2: Ele, Thief, Engi (I actually dunno anymore after grenade nerf)
T3: Necro, Ranger

The highest skilled T1 class will always bring more to a PvE party then the highest skilled T3 class.

FWIW, my Elementalist has never been turned away from a dungeon group, but my Mesmer has.

Lately my group has been using the following..

1 tanky faceroll crit hammer guardian
1 mace/staff shout support/heal guardian
2 100b faceroll warriors
1 glass cannon mesmer

We have big problems with DR on tokens even though we never skip anything so we have to take a half hour break between dungeons.
