TL;DR

I dont miss the trinity roles from other mmo’s where I had to roll a tank or healer to get quick groups and if I was dps I had to wait around for awhile. Variety is a good thing.

If you for example mean asking over the Trade Channel in WoW, then yeah, that was daunting.
- Mostly, because I never used it since being in a Guild and having friends that were also playing would mean that we wouldn’t need one particular role at any given time.
Guilds used to be large, people taking more pride in what they did and handling it better than the small disorganized groups that call themselves “guilds” nowadays.

You needed 9 people to sign a petition in WoW, because if you had 10 people you could basically take on all dungeons and some of the raids, but since people were more keen on the Trade Channel, they introduced the Dungeon Finder.

Still, I like the way GW2 does its profession/class roles, but I prefer the old system still… and mayhap that is because I need to do more dungeons than I have the time for currently (only done a few, and still have to get into his way of dealing with them).

Final Fantasy XIV’s relaunch will be a trinity PVE game with some PvP. The open beta will start around late april/may. The guy in charge of that game now is pretty good, it may be worth looking at especially if you liked WoW or 8-24 man group content.

Thanks for the posts folks, I definitely know there is gratification to performing with your class exceptionally. I’ve had the opportunity to experience that.

And it is nice to see how you guys have learned to really enjoy that and make the game from it.

I think for now I will have to take a couple folks advice and just not try to find a ‘one-stop-shop’ game for now and play something else concurrently with GW2, and just enjoy it for what it is, and hopefully either my tastes will change, or they will incorporate more of what I’m looking for in the future (unlikely, I know)!

But these roles are not required. A massive DPS group can win. A more support oriented group can win. A mix can win. It all comes down to the talent of the individual players.

Yep! And that’s exactly what I found out I love, and miss. I like feeling like my class is indispensable to the task at hand. You explained it very well there, and went on to explain strong reasons for why there are plenty of Pros for the way this game is instead, great post.

Thanks for the tip about FFXIV (Holy cow, that many?) I stopped paying attention to them around VII, haha. Will check it out.

- edit

Oh, just as a note, you have jerks that polluted the experience in trinity games in any game you play, be it FPS, RTS, And even here, in a Trinity-free environment and they can still do damage.

Kimeni,

I don’t think Guild Wars is perfect. But I do think the current anti-trinity system is fantastic. And here’s why: all play styles are valuable and useful but none are required.

I don’t think anyone is questioning whether dps is viable in GW2, so I’ll skip that.

Healing and control are all still important. Snaring a boss on my elementalist and then laying down a healing field, for example, makes a huge difference. People may not thank me for it, but I can see the difference when I switch to my warrior.

Tanking is still powerful. I find that with a hammer guardian, good dodging, and altruistic healing, I can face-tank quite a few bosses. (Funny that a hammer is the best tanking weapon, right?) For example, I was playing my elementalist and Lieutenant Kholer crushed our pug group through two wipes. This was mostly because the rest of my group were dying like fruit flies. Anyway, I switched to my guardian and stood toe-to-toe with him while laying out near constant protection for all the melee players on my team. We rolled that overgrown ghost and the rest of the dungeon. I found great satisfaction in being a difference maker, in looking at people’s status bars and seeing protection up on almost the whole team. And in that case, I knew for a fact that my skill as a tank was key.

But these roles are not required. A massive DPS group can win. A more support oriented group can win. A mix can win. It all comes down to the talent of the individual players.

Because the roles are not required, I get to play however I want, tailoring the way I play to what I enjoy. In other words, I find that a dungeon group can win in any way.

Naturally, players will start to tend towards the most efficient option, massive DPS. I’d say that has more to do with player temperment than game design. But the mere fact that all options can be viable is mmo heaven to me. I can play any way I want and, as long as I do it well, my team will prosper.

Are you needed? Not in one role. What you are needed for is your skill. Play whatever role you like and you will benefit your group.

Just my little attempt to keep you playing a bit longer.

Absolutely true. Until the pug of wierdos of the day allow you to “play as you want”.
I guess you was referring to gameplay with your strict group of usual friends playing together. Realistically talking, the “turbo run” are nowadays the most popular.
You play as you want? “Kick this guy, find a serious dps , like a war” etc..

Final Fantasy XIV’s relaunch will be a trinity PVE game with some PvP. The open beta will start around late april/may. The guy in charge of that game now is pretty good, it may be worth looking at especially if you liked WoW or 8-24 man group content.

Absolutely agree, an other great trinity mmo is coming, uber graphic for real, and maybe finally, the game as it should have been long ago lol
