Q:
Hard to find people to do Story mode for dungeons now..
I don’t know if it was a good idea to separate story and explore modes. I’ve only completed about 3 dungeons in story mode and I probably won’t ever do the rest.
The changes we are making to the loot drops for Explorable will be rolled into Story as well, so defeating Story bosses will give you items to help you progress into explorables easier. We want to make a definite progression from Story to Explorable.. Not create this weird separation of the two we have currently.
While that is good news, I also feel the need to point out that the story modes I’ve done seem strangely much more difficult. For example, in HotW, I ran with a group that had no problem in explore, we decided to tackle story since most of us hadn’t done it. The boss in the Voice’s room I think it is, who stands in one spot and does AOE frost, seemed very difficult and I couldn’t figure out his trick. I was playing dagger/dagger ele, so that might have contributed, but he seemed much more difficult than say, the Butcher.
His trick is actually really simple.
He does a close frost, and a far frost. He alternates between them.
Watch out for the turrets
Just chiming in as well in agreement on how hard it is to find story groups—I just started doing dungeons these past 2 weeks and finding story mode dungeons is next to impossible. I am worried that once I have a new character progress through their story to fighting Zhaitan I will not be able to complete it because no one wants to do story Arah. I would like to see the stories in the dungeons I have not done but at this point I am not sure that is possible.. which is crazy considering the game is only a few months old!
I worry that better loot may not help the story dungeons though but hopefully a better group finder is in place by the time I need to do Arah story again.. just hopeful now I can see the last few story mode dungeons at least.
@William Fairfield:
That makes some sense, but the room is so small, I couldn’t see any turrets, and it was very difficult to go in and out. Not to mention, iirc he does knockbacks and I recall being thrown into his frosts quite a bit. Is there any way that room could be expanded a bit? I think that would clear up a lot of the difficulty, which feels much harder than Story mode should.
I’m all for learning how to handle an encounter better, but I felt that one didn’t feel intuitive or learnable by observing over the fight.
For a comparison, I felt that Kholer in AC explore was bit better, as even though he is annoying, there is a clear ‘tell’ to his dangerous move and that gave me a better sense of what I was doing right and wrong.
Please make it so that we can get the full, normal reward from Story Mode at least once a day per dungeon, and so that we get full credit if there’s at least one member that hasn’t completed Story Mode for a given dungeon.
That way, there’s incentive to actually play them more than once, but people won’t be able to simply farm them constantly, and players that have not completed it won’t have such an abysmal time trying to find a group (as currently is the case).
I think fixing the loot drops as is happening with Explorable is a good step in the right direction, but if Story Mode only ever gives a full reward one time (and the laughable 6s joke reward every time after that), people will still avoid it like the plague.
By any change will a dev that know answer if the loot change be rolled into the 22nd update or is it still in a when it is done stage?
Long dungeons, 13s reward for a repeat, no tokens – there’s basically no incentive to re-run story mode unless you find them fun for whatever reason.
I just did Sorrow’s Embrace story mode and it was a terrible experience imo. It was much harder than explore and took us probably 1.5 – 2 hours to clear. Why should I bother with story when explore is easier (and more fun imo) and has better rewards?
feels good having a game designer reply to my post. but the main question is not answered. Having a lot of high level gamers having done story mode, its not easy for new people to find someone who will help do our story modes for dungeons..Specially when the time needed to complete it is so much higher and more difficult. Why not make it like a Personal story mode like which can be completed by a single person for the first time and do the explorable after?
Personally, I agree with CasuLL.
I find a flaw in this system whereby players who completed their story mode would be reluctant to go for story mode again. Except for a few who are helpful enough to help others.
The distinct separation for this 2 modes are undeniable and its something I believe the Dungeon Developing/Designing team has overlooked.
Go into the game, shout for “Looking for party for Explorable mode” and “Looking for party for Story mode” and you’ll realize how easy it is to get explorable mode companions and how hard it is to find people willing to go for story mode. Only a few kind souls have been kind enough to help. Others are those who have went through it with their main character and now their sub character needs to do it.
There is no incentive MADE KNOWN to players about helping others in story mode.
I am not sure if there are tokens for players who have completed story mode to help others again in story mode.
It would be wonderful if:
a. Story Mode awards those who completed it before with tokens.
b. Story Mode is significantly easier.
Above 2 condition would encourage players to join others and help others who need to go into story mode for the first time.
c. Story mode is only open to a player who never completed story mode before.
Above would also mean that players who have completed can only take advantage of this system when other players who are real first timers are going in.
I foresee more social benefits in the above set up than what it is now.
For now, the difficulty is so hard in story mode that we are reliant on partying up a full party. Otherwise we won’t be able to make it. If developers are not considering the above 3 points, then consider making the dungeon for story mode less demanding.
Perhaps a pair of players would be able to complete it instead of five.
For now its way too hard. Why?
Two level 40+ players in a level 30 catacomb = totally annihilated back then.
Today, Two level 80 full exotic players teaming with level 60+ and 40+ players in the same LEVEL 30 catacombs still get annihilated.

It would be nice if story mode wasn’t significantly more difficult than explorer in more than a few instances. HotW story being the one on the top of my mind, right now. Seriously, 4 guild members, all in exotic gear bringing a lvl 76 guardian through for his first time and we are getting WRECKED in here. Seriously I’ve died so many times that even if I do get the full 26 silver which I doubt I will, it won’t really cover the cost of repairs. In fact I will lose money by doing this. Half the bosses are basically “GY ZERG UNTIL THEY ARE DEAD”. So seriously I am pretty upset right now. I’m upset by the crappy amount of balancing. I’m upset by the attitude of the devs being “Our dungeons are too hard? LEARN TO PLAY!” or “Explorer mode is easier than story mode? K! /buffs the kitten out of story mode /trollface”. I’m very irritated. Like I want to break my keyboard in half irritated.
Anet, your story mode dungeons are total BS, your balancing BS and your response to the community regarding them is BS. Take your story dungeons and shove them up your kitten*.
*I don’t advocate animal cruelty in any way.
I can only repeat myself, as I’ve done in the last 3 MMORPGs I’ve player which lacked a dungeon finder. Ironically now they all got one because of popular demand.
Doesn’t have to be a code masterwork. Just a simle list where you can sign up for a certain dungeon/path, and where people see who’s looking for what.
So people can actually play the game instead of sitting still in a zone and writing LFG for hours..
To top this off, 1) youre forced to spam chat with lfg and 2) even if you do it with moderation you get supressed for spamming sometimes and just CAN’T lfg any longer.
