How does merge parties work?
Theirs, you basically become the new instance owner, even if they are already inside.

Wow…. so presumably you can only merge with parties that haven’t yet started a dungeon path — lest you destroy someone’s progress?

you can merge with parties that are in progress because this system is incredibly well designed. it allows people like heitred to grief arah paths! how nice!
Surely there’s an option when creating an LFG that allows you to prevent party merging? Like a checkbox or something?

You’d think so! But…
As Spoj said, the “Merge Parties” button should say “Grief this Party”.
Party merging definitely needs some work. I posted a fotm49 group with 3 people (had not yet started even rolling), we were merged by another party which auto-kicked one of our members. I was then kicked and before the other person in my original party dropped that group so we could reform, they said “just need a guardian now”. I will never no if it was a mistake or they tried to grab the war/guard in my other group; either way, there are problems that need fixing.

Is there a warning when you click the merge button that the other party is already in the instance and that you will destroy their progress?
No.
Edit: I might cause confusion. I’m answering the question above this.
“Memories are nice, but that’s all they are.”
