Q:

Topic title says it all, but let me put it into context:

I’m a mute guy. Not the shy kind too, really mute, I can barely mumble (it’s not tragic or anything, I had a minor tumor and fortunately lost only the voice). Now, that doesn’t concern my playing of games at all, and I play a lot: I’ve done most things around GW2 short of the legendary journeys and raiding, playing for years alongside other games. With that said, fractals got stale so I’d like to start practicing and running raids.

I’ve got the gear and I’ve got the patience, only problem is, most groups I see around require voice chat like TS. While that would be no problem on my side (my ears work even better than they used to), I’m not sure if it would harm performance to the point where it’d be annoying for the team if I couldn’t point out things fast (e.g look guys a green circle!). Either way I have good humor about this – not gonna scream at people for not wanting me around, but if raiders overall do not find it unbearable, I am definitely going to silently sneak into the raiding game ^^

Very important, in a ten man team you have to be able to communicate, and most people arent going to look into the chat box, half the time when they can type something, the enemy attack has already happened. Voice chat is a must have, that said though, u dont need to talk, just listen to your teamates

Voice chat is not important at all. When I pug raids I usually only come to listen what others have to say and not talk much if anything at all. If people you raid with have situational awareness they will see if you need healing/rezzing or otherwise in trouble.
A zero TS group will probably work, too, if people arent too lazy for typing.

I strongly disagree. TS is nice to have but entirely optional if everyone knows what they are doing and distributed important jobs before starting (eg. who goes into green fields, who stops mortars etc)

IDK about pugs tbh (as I never pug anyway), might be best to find a guild to raid with. From personal experience, a few ppl in my guild don’t talk and while it can sometimes cause some small issues it’s nothing really game breaking. Stuff like not noticing that person is downed for example and since one of our mutes often does cannons at sabetha there’s a mix up from time to time. But generally as long as you have a good raid leader that calls everything or a couple of ppl that do it, it’s all fine.

strongly disagree, while it’s true you don’t need to personally talk, TS makes the raid vastly easier. I’ve raided since day one, cleared everything, and I couldnt imagine trying to do sabetha or matthias without coms and someone making calls.

Neither boss requires all 10 ppl to open their mouth tho. In fact it’s usually better if not everyone talks a lot.

I never said he had to talk, infact, I said he didn’t have to talk. But I do still reccomend voice chat, just to listen for calls.

He asked if he needs to be able to talk on TS. He does not unless he wants to be a raid leader. Most pug groups only require you to listen if they want you to use voice chat.
Just today I cleared whole wing 1 on first try with a pug group on another account (had almost no legendary insights on it, so group without insights or other proof requirements). There was TS but noone was required to speak. Actually I didnt even understand much of what the commander was saying, was a weird mix of russian and english.
I am sure OP will be just fine if he tells his group about his disability to speak.

i’m sure he will too. again pointless argument because i never said he had to talk. But he does need TS. It can be done without it sure, but that’s generally a horrible idea. especially when learning the raid. I was refuting your statement about voice chat not being important at all

Max, as long as you can hear what commanders or raid leaders are saying, then you don’t have to say a word. If you’re running with a pug, discord or ts are very useful, but doesn’t mean you yourself have to speak.

Infact there is nothing more annoying than constant chatter over the mics when you need to focus on the boss and mechanics. Nothing wrong with chilling after the fight, but regarding fights themselves, the less people speaking the better.

you don’t need to talk unless you’re leading a raid. get whichever voip program the raid is using, have it installed, be on it, mute or disconnect your mic. no one will question it. but you need to be on the same page as them, and voip gets you to that page 30x faster than typing.

It’s important to listen if you can. It’s not necessarily important to talk. Of course, you can get by without it, and people should be allowances if someone has an unfortunate circumstance.

Obviously guild groups are often more forgiving than pugs.

communicating is important, we had a mute person raiding on my guild, this person did use a soundboard to communicate important things.

As long as you are not the leader of the said raid group you are perfectly fine. You may struggle if you are assigned a mechanic like ‘green’ on VG, or ‘cannons’ on sabathea, purely because you can’t call out if you miss / will be late / or to throw you will make it (sabetha), But I’ve also done them myself even while muting myself cause I just didn’t want to speak.

All in all, It’s not much to worry, Really most only want you on TS to listen in the first place. It’s the commander / caller who is speaking the most in the first place. I’ve pug’d and done guild raids enough times with mutes (no mic’s). So don’t worry about it, find a raid group and jump in. You won’t really struggle any more than someone who can communicate back.

I will add, (just cause it’s funny) In a most extreme case, I helped a friend pug sabetha cause he needed his clear. Turns out all 8 pugs we found did not / could not speak. We did it in 4 pulls. As long as you can still do mechanics it’s easily possible to successfully raid. Only difference truly is it would be harder to recover from mistakes if things go south.

Unless you are in charge of running some aspect of the raid, being mute won’t be a hindrance when using voice chat. You are mostly there to hear, not to speak. You typically want as few people talking as possible.

Once everyone actually knows the fight, you don’t really even need to use voice chat.

imo you don’t need to speak. But be honest about it. and try to not take important roles. Because sometimes it can be dead or alive when at sabetha you can say that you cannot reach the cannon. So backup can cover for you in time. Or mushrooms on slothasor. I’ve done enough raids where people don’t talk. But if you can avoid taking an important role. do so. Especially when you start doing raids. Maybe it is an option to have macro’s that can type somethin really fast or a sounboard where you can give small notifications like I’m down. But as said before. It’s not neccesary

Talking isn’t important, but listening is. More than 3/4 of my raid group never speak on TS, but really all they need to do is listen to me so we beat every boss regardless.

To be honest I believe anyone can play raids if they truly want. No matter if blind, deaf, only 1 hand, playing with feet or muted. And I mentioned blind on purpose. I heared of blind people playing (complex) games before if they have someone who can accurately describe to them in real time what is going on.

You’ll have difficulty raiding while blind

Anyway mute is basically no handicap at all unless you want to lead. Half the people I raid with will be in voice chat and listening but type for anything they want to say.

As always, the importance of any single feature/skill depends a lot on the group. To an experienced group with highly-skilled players, voice won’t matter much (except that a lot of people find it to be more fun).

For the inexperienced, voice can be a life-saver (even if one doesn’t have a mic, just the voice-chat program).

I’m among the few people I know that can type and play effectively. But (a) even I can’t type “green circle in back” and distract a seeker simultaneously and (b) even if I could, a lot of players aren’t going to read that until there’s a gap in the action.

In short, if you have to ask “how important is voice during raids”, you have to plan as if the answer is: “critically important.” (If you don’t need to ask, you can rest assured that it’s not that important.) In other words, everyone posting in this thread is correct — with respect to their own situation.
