Hi,
1. Does anyone use the gw2lfg website any more? I have only seen one or two lfgs on there. Is this dead? or do I need to try prime times? 2. What is the other way to find a group (maybe a guild?)? Do I go to LA and look in chat?

I am just starting GW2, and have a level 40 ranger, and would like to run some dungeons.
3. Any advice? Should I study the dungeons first/watch videos? I have run pug dungeons a lot in other MMOs.

4. Will being a ranger hurt me – should I roll another class – or if I play well and smart will I be fine with a ranger? I like ranged classes (not too into the pet though). 5. Any other ranged class suggestions?

So I’ll answer in order :

1 & 2) Yes, gw2lfg is dead, for the ingame LFG sytem works well (friend panel, second tab). Only use gw2lfg when ig LFG system is down (happened once so far).

3) Ranger is starting to be accepted in pugs, but you need to play it well Do watch the videos, it’s nice advice and if you follow them you’ll peform better than so called “pro pugs” (personal experience there).

4) As far as playing ranger goes, please play fully in melee, at least in dungeons. The combat system of GW2 emphasizes on meleeing to make the best out of the boons and damage, damage that is basically the only thing you’ll need in dungeons. Non basic explanation is damage + necessary support, in the form of traits and utilities, not gear.

5) If you want to play ranged, you expose yourself to :
- getting kicked on spot.
- having nothing but first-timers or noobs with you (which gets rther annoying as you repeat the content).

4. Yes and no. There is a fear of bad rangers and quite a few are bad. You can help change that belief by being good.

There is an in game LFG tool no so that website isn’t needed. If you look in this forum there is also a Dungeon Mentor guild that you may want to join to get some pointers and a good teacher. Being a Ranger won’t hurt you per se, but being a purely ranged fighter probably will cause you some problems in dungeons. You should at a minimum bring a melee weapon with you (and be ready to use it) and be prepared to put your pet on inactive until you learn when to let them loose. The biggest thing about dungeons is that you aren’t playing alone anymore but with a team so you have to start to understand what you can do to help the teams you will be running with. Ranger is pretty solid if you trait for Spotter and then bring Frost Spirit utility as that really helps your team’s killing power. Also, when you use the in game LFG tool avoid groups that say “EXP” since they want only experienced people and tell whatever group you join that you are new. Good luck and have fun.

If you really want to play with ranged weapons you can play staff elementalist, which is top dps and is ranged, or engineer, with engineer you can use grenades, but grenades demand more effort since you need to keep placing the aoe target on every auto-atack, you can aliviate that by setting your ground targeting to “instant” and using those mouses with buttons on the side.

Ranger in gw2 sucks with bows, ranger is more a beastmaster and not a really good archer. Warrior for example is better with longbow than ranger.

As others said though, ranged is usually a nono in dungeons, no worries, as you learn the encounters you will know when to dodge. Rangers have a few nice dodge buttons on sword 2, 3 and dagger 4.

You’d have much more fun waiting until you get to level 80 before doing dungeons. With the new trait system, you’re enormously weak when under level 80.
