Is the strategy for ever boss, mob just kite, dodge and avoid circles?

I take it you’ve done like 2 dungeons?
If people are mindlessly running around it would explain why so many people thing dungeons are too hard.
Every boss Ive seen has had mechanics to them. Some have been extremely simple but others have required some work to figure out as well as careful utilisation of skills.
SE is the only example I can think of where combat’s actually different. Most everything else is DPS, dodge, kite, hope you get lucky and you’re not the one who gets focused by every single mob.
The only reason players are mindlessly running around, is because it’s a game of tag with the standard mobs, and when they hit you you’re “it” and that translates into downed, and that usually translates into dead. so you can’t blame players for literally just running from mobs, which breaks cohesion in groups when they don’t have time to stop and react or think for a second before “oh no gotta move, mob gonna kill me in one shot”
This is further problematic when that one shot damage means you end up in ranged all the time. which is further an issue when you get mobs that are unshakable or unstoppable and can’t be warded, or glitch through wards and shields or attack through them etc etc etc. Combat in this game is fine til we hit dungeons and then it hits the fan, and what changes have we seen from devs?
more champions, more hp, more aoe fail skills to hit you and buffs to dungeon difficulty WITHOUT addressing the core issues, it’s insulting to our intelligence tbh
when we’re NOT being one shot, then it’s got great potential, I liked having to block the exp AC bosses aoe pull with good timing, it gave me a glimmer of hope that this game could have some great dynamic combat.
Dungeon update!: first boss in AC explorable route 3’s charge aoe pull will now ignore barriers and reflects as well as aegis
:/ lol

@Hellkaiser, first boss in AC explorable doesn’t ignore stability or dodge. Here’s an idea when he’s charging his attack… dodge.
if there is another way to play, they need to introduce it into the game, cause that’s all its been so far for me, and everyone I have played with. videos I have watched….
Its fun at first but it feels stale and lazy, they need to give classes roles, there’s a reason that’s a standard in every online game ever.
meh…with how horrible the dungeons are, and how stale the combat is, and the NOT so dynamic events, broken zones and massive bugs, this game was really wrongly advertised and they should issue refunds, re-work the game. and release it when it really is ready, this is pathetic and to think I picked this over many great games that are coming out.
Where the hell did the good reviews come from? did they pay everyone off?
this is by far the worst release of a new online game I have ever seen.
People also seem to forget that almost every boss that has the Unstoppable Buff is not immune to immobilize. Using some weapons or utilities with immobilize can make a hard fight into one that is manageable.

not immune, no, but the duration is cut to like 1/4
*if you mean unstoppable and not the cc immunity that drops after 3 counters and resets
So far I’ve had encounters where getting taking lots of condition removals was vital, encounters where lots of aoe damage was necessary, where anti projectile skills saved ourkitten etc…
I imagine that sooner or later the top players (the real top players not the guys who constantly display their mmo resume and complain about gw2 dungeons being too hard because THEY can’t figure them out) will figure all of them out and post strategies.
And then everyone will copy them, run the dungeons twice and start spamming “LFG explorable, experienced full exo only” and complain at everyone who aren’t using the meta builds.
You know, circle of life and all.
You know, people can clear dungeons easily with corpserunning. But bosses actually have mechanics – SHOCK -
For example the route 2 of AC. The whole chain trap thing.
First it wasy really hard for our group, then I was like kitten this kitten. I will tank them like a boss. So I want in the spikes and waited untill they game… I was scared.
When they finally came storming to me and my 2 friends who stayed with me to our upcoming doom. We started fighting… and were amazed. THe people who used the traps where doing it right. The monsters stayed on those traps, died so quickly. Then after that the champion came. Who died also quickly.
A boss where we wiped 5 times, finally died after 30 seconds.
It’s just the whole, how do you fight it? Corpserunning makes it expensive. Thinking about it makes it fun.
Sorrows Embrace, that golem with his conditions damage heal thing.
He shoots poison bolts. YOU HAVE reflection walls and dooms.
Are you getting the picture? You have so many different ways to attack a boss, but people should read what a boss can do. Do they shoot projectiles, then just use your reflection ability. It makes things so much easier than just kite and corpse run.
@maxamillian greil:
read. my. post. again.
snottykitten comment, when I simply stated that I liked blocking his aoe pull for my team to help stop some of the accidental downs.
Believe me, when I’m commenting negatively on a boss encounter you’ll both know, and understand in annoying detail why. some people…. jeez
This is by far the worst release of a new online game I have ever seen.
Please go and troll someplace else. Or go back to WoW where you most likely came from.
Apart from a few issues in the first week GW2 is the best MMO launch that’s been around for years. StarWars: TOR etc all pale by comparison in terms of what GW2 has to offer both PvE and PvP wise.
No game is perfect, so neither is GW2. there’s still some things that would need patching or tweaking but it’s a very solid basis to start from.
I take it you’ve done like 2 dungeons?
I used to level my Thief with 2x daggers. I tried the other weapon combinations. I would have preferred sword+dagger, mostly for the looks. But I ended up playing 2x daggers. For my first dungeon, I had the plan to go ranged. I gotten myself 2 pistols, practiced a bit outside. And used pistols in AC SM. I got stomped on.
Then I read I should have used a shortbow. The last 20 levels I’ve been leveling with a shortbow. So much easier. I just kite everything. The shortbow hits 3 targets, so I can kite whole groups forever. The dps is lower, it takes a little longer to kill stuff. But the risk is almost none. I can now kill veterans without a problem. Even higher level than me. I bet I can solo Champions too. I struggled in some Personal Story quests before, but with my shortbow, everything is easy, I never die. I can only go daggers when I know I can burst mobs down in short fights.
I haven’t stepped in a dungeon again (my mates are a bit less enthousiastic after our first AC attempt). But it is clear to me that ranged and kiting is the preferred way.
Awesome.
I thought I had rolled a character to play melee.
It turns out I rolled a friggin hunter.
I am not a happy kitty.

So, what you are saying here is ArenaNet needs to nerf shortbow for thief?

There is no such thing as a melee character, or a healer, or a tank, or a dps. You need to adapt your character to the situation. Have a weapon for EVERY situation and be ready to adapt your character (skills, weapons, utility skills, elites, ect) to every boss fight.
Well I have now started my planning to take over the world. It is going to involve crushing an apparently very large portion of the population with their lack of problem solving capabilities. Watching as you all run in around circles shall be entertaining.
Dungeons are about more than just dodging, strafing and running around. Depending on the fight, many different factors come into play -
- Party placement. Where you are standing and how you move in relation to the rest of your group can make a huge difference.
- Controlled burst damage. Knowing when to bring the pain to deal with adds or keep the bosses attention off of something else is critical.
- Dealing with condition damage. Coordinating with your team to remove poison, fire, bleeds and confusion. There are several combo fields that, if you understand how to use them, are great for this.
- Prioritizing targets. Kill the biggest threat to your livelihood (or the healer) first.
- Divide and conquer. You can grab and hold aggo if you know what youre doing. use this to keep a boss or group of mobs busy while the rest of the group deals with the rest. Being that distraction is my favorite role in a group.
- Alot of other little things, such as knowing when to use stability (or apply it to the group), when to use evasive techniques (in addition than dodge), knowing when/how to intercept damage when a teammate is about to die, etc.
Best advice is to learn the fights and learn how your group works together. It is a very rich and deep system. The problem is people wipe a few times, give up and decide the best strategy is to “waypoint zerg.” Spend some time working with your group on different strategies and you will find them much more fun and engaging.
