I have run almost every dungeon there is and a 100% FACT is that the NPC’s arena net puts in these dungeons are more of a pain in the butt than a help at all. So until you can get them to work CORRECTLY just take them the hell out. My gripe comes from 2 things with them.
1: They bug out! Not all the time but in EVERY SINGLE instance where you have an NPC a long for the ride, I have experienced them not working correctly. And hindering getting the final reward.. you know how pissed off that makes people.
2: NO I DONT WANT TO TALK TO YOU! Get rid of the friggin option to talk to the NPC once the story is going. The last thing I need when im focusing on trying to dodge a 1 shot ability from a boss, is a that blasted NPC green bar on my screen asking me to talk! it gets in the way of all your interaction buttons and your looting as well, just get rid of it!
I pray to the heavens above that some dev reads this… its annoying the living hell out of your players.
Like Randall in arah path 4… A melee npc that grubs spawn on during GL… You pretty much have to get Randall killed to complete GL or Dwayna (kiting sparks, they love him!). We shouldn’t have to plot the demise of an npc to progress. Lol
Randall… If you were a ranged npc, like the others, you wouldn’t be so bad. But melee? With those encounters? REALLY? Make it so grubs don’t spawn on npcs, or sparks ignore him. Dwayna’s sparks are already buggy enough.
Randall is the main reason we will not do path 4 again. (very disappointed we couldn’t kill him during the last fight…)

We have been asking for this for a long time. It seems the devs think that the “story” is more important to gameplay. It is irritating to think realistically these explore mode dungeons are essentially an escort mission hidden within bugs and praying for triggers to happen.
No we don’t care about story – thats why you have Story mode. If you need to explain something to the player have the NPC spawn then despawn. Yes it doesn’t “look” right, but neither is a bugged NPC not giving you credit, opening a door, or even screwing up dungeon boss mechanics.
To my knowledge we’ll be keeping the NPCs who accompany you through the dungeon. We do however need to enhance their AI and modify their skills to make them more valuable.

What would be amazingly helpful is if you could talk to your npc and they had a “follow me” directive, and a “sit, stay” directive. We could tell Randall to not be in GL’s crotch, and stay with us, and during Dwayna, could have him follow our melee, and not our ranged kiters. Keep it from being exploited by having them leash like normal if you get too far.

a survivability buff would help too. no one enjoys babysitting the AI, especially when it’s a fragile NPC. there’s a reason escort missions are typically shunned upon.
I’m beginning to think the same way. Also remove gates, until you make em to work!!!
An improvement to the AI would help considerably: equip each NPC with both a ranged and melee weapon set (wherever it makes sense, at least), and simply have them use whichever makes the most sense for each particular fight or area.
If you intend to keep them in then for gods sake fix the events that they have to trigger. AC path 1 has failed to progress to the scepter room 7 times for me. Do you have ANY idea how frustrating this is? If anet is really planning to keep these in then this is the number one issue that needs to be addressed.
I found Illyria very helpful when soloing the Mage Crusher (which opens up the WP for everyone else in the party).

But yes for the sake of BUGS they definitely need a “What’s our Status (are we stuck?)” Dialogue that forces a Variable reset and a series of simple boolean checks (is X & Y Boss Dead?) to make sure they opened the doors and objectives they were supposed to open.

If they added that to NPC allies I would take back my previous statement about removing them and just spawning/despawning them in/out whenever required.
But since we both know that ain’t gonna happen. =/
