Lupicus - Warrior Offhand Sword
The cool down is half as long, and the duration of the block is enough to block most of his attacks.
^ That. Also sword 4 can do some damage to lupi, shield 4 is useless.
U can use both axt/shield + axt/sword is ok too. If u can´t/want to handle GS 3.
But i prefer GS+Axe/Sword.
Several reasons – While shield 5 is better in that you’ll continue blocking even if you’re in melee range, sword is better for lupicus because the cool-down is only 15 seconds. This means that it’ll be available for you almost every time in p2 for his necrid barrage, so you can dodge backwards then riposte. In my opinion that’s the most reliable way to dodge it.
If you’ve got the dual-wielding trait, having sword as your offhand gives you an additional 5% damage compared to the shield. Sword 4 can stack some bleeds and torment which definitely does more damage than shield 4.
Sword is definitely better but shield also has its uses. The most obvious one is the longer duration on the block (longer by 0.75 seconds). The shield 4 (shield bash) can also be used for phase 3 life drink since the bash has a range of 300 so you can get back on Lupi faster before he bubbles you. I still use my shield for my solos since I prefer the shield bash charge over having to eviscerate Lupi since you lose out on dps when the adrenaline is down.
The difference is more dps but more risk. Shield is safer and the 30 second cd doesnt mean anything if you use your dodges and any other skills that block or evade attacks efficiently.
A flaw with the sword is if you get nailed by multiple projectiles you have to dodge to avoid being killed since sword is one block. What sword is really good for is his attack where he targets a person with one projectile.
tl;dr
sword = more dps, more risk
shield = less dps but safer

This is completely wrong sword blocks an unlimited number of attacks during the duration of the block, just like shield does. It just has a slightly shorter duration. Sword is MUCH better than shield in dps and the fact that you can use it twice as often.

Not really. Riposte blocks an unlimited amount of stuff, so long as you aren’t right up next to GL when you block in which case Risposte will end early.
Simply put, riposte will block all ranged attacks for the duration if you’re away from the target but for melee attacks, it’ll only block the first melee attack.

Not exactly, riposte stops working the moment your character tries to retalliate which requires him to be in the riposte attack max range.
Which sometimes allows to cheese through multiple/multihit melee attacks.
You can end up with a prematurely finished riposte and your own attack not hitting trying to do that tho.
OK, thanks for the answers!
Keep in mind that the first ~quarter second of the sword block does not block properly. This can get you killed by Frenzied Blast. This is also the case with the first bit of Whirlwind Attack.
Also, you cannot accidentally cancel shield block if you panic and tap it twice; this will happen if you are using sword block.
However, once you are used to the sword block it’s probably easier to survive with that than shield block. The CD is also much shorter (you will have it up for almost every AOE life drain and Frenzied Blast) and there’s more overall damage from #4 DoT and Dual Wielding procs.
Is #4 sword more dps than axe auto? Would it be dps gain or loss?
Is riposte long enough to get you through AOE life drain in p3 after the first dodge on the raise?
Edit: I normally play on my mesmer. But once chuck quits messing around with wall I’m hoping to bring my war.

You should only use #4 when you’re running back to him after he does his AoE life drain, otherwise i think it’s a DPS loss.
Riposte should be long enough if you time it right, but I usually just dodge + whirlwind out so I can’t really comment on that.

yes to both

Ty for the replies, from both. Not being too familiar with warrior, I did not know #4 was a ‘ranged’ attack

it’s what makes the skill really good. in p3 for example you can use it after life drain aoe and rip out when you get close again
