MOP: Adding Sloth Raid boss feels like fluff
I listened to what they had to say. Didn’t disagree with any of it. Worth 5 minutes of your time if you don’t normally listen to MOP
Dude, it’s got red eyes. Totally legitimate.
It’s no way shape or form indicative of a once great game losing all sense of direction and identity at the whims of a company seemingly disconnected with their user base with a primary motivation of farming their wallets via micro-transactions or numerous gold sinks funded by their gem to gold exchange market before all the nostalgia for a once great game runs out and everyone gets kittened off and quits.
Nothing to worry about at all.
I’d rather have new fractal content. Raids are ok, but kind of blah. Fractals need some updating since there hasn’t been much focus there in a long time

Are you serious? At launch the game had a shortbow that shoots unicorns with Anet’s logo on their hindquarters instead of arrows. But no, a giant sloth is totally going too far.
Some people will complain about anything. As long as the mechanics are interesting and it’s a good fight, I don’t care if I’m fighting a giant pile of jello with googly eyes.
At the very least, i’m interested in the story telling behind said sloth.
Granted i cannot personally see the appeal and would have liked a more menacing or heavily (pre-estabilished) lore influenced fight.
Adding lore would be a huge plus. Right now we got some chick named Sabetha that kidnapped a couple Pact members and we gotta go through some magical foresty temple thing to rescue them. Did Sabetha just pay Vale Guardian to stand at the gate or something?

There is lore, you just got to pay attention. Flavor dialog and the journals are your friend. It is clear that Sabetha is not running the operation, she herself says as much I feel we will hear much more on the further wings.

Fair point callout. Can’t say that I pay too much attention to the text as I would the voice acting/cinema.

I am really curious about what Knuckles had to say.
Sabetha the Saboteur: Knuckles, take care of them!
“Knuckles”: Stop it!
“Knuckles”: I can take you to it! I can lead you to–
Sabetha the Saboteur: Bite your tongue!
The lore is there. It isn’t as in your face as I would prefer. But there are tidbits.

I just went on the wiki and pulled up all the dialogue and entries for Spirit Vale to read through it.
I….I need to lie down now.

Some speculation and spoilers. But here you go.

I was referring more to how they talked about doubling down on a raid boss and how that wasn’t what the games core player base necessarily wanted to see.
I know I won’t. If all the content patch is a new raid wing, then it will be their first content patch in years that didn’t have anything I wanted to do or was willing to do.
I don’t really care if it’s a unicorn or sloth as I don’t want to do raids, but I will say it’s certainly a very fitting and appropriate mascot for a development team that hasn’t produced a new fractal or dungeon in forever, has caused a lot of WvW guilds to leave, because of their continued neglect of WvW and has an arguably broken PvP metagame due to slow and ineffective balance changes.
I don’t blame people for being mad. After all the criticisms I have seen leveraged against HoT and Anet and the constant dwindling player population in the guilds I am part, their first content patch after like months containing only a raid wing with a sloth feels like they are laughing at their own players and making a mockery of it all.

If you’re getting all that from a single sloth, then maybe you need to take a break for a while.
If you’re angry at WvW or fractals or whatever, fine complain about those; they’re valid criticisms. Don’t blame it all on a sloth though.

Im sure the anet design teams would rather make the Sloth their scapegoat than their own hindquarters.

Well, I am a mad rabbit, but I assure you I am not mad at pixelated sloth. I do not have a wall covered with pictures of the said sloth with his eyes scratched out or any death threats written on them.
At best I would say, I am disappointed at what Anet’s new mascot represents. I kind of view him as the Jar Jar Binks of GW2.

I’m not sure i’d go that far, atleast we’ll be able to kill the sloth. Jar Jar however, has escaped that fate.

Nice. Well played, man. Well played.
But yeah, I do think it’s an appropriate analogy to some extent. I mean, at the very least, the fact that it’s a sloth is symbolic of the entire reason I don’t want to raid in GW2.
Minus the fact that I am of opinion that raids are really contrary to the whole game design of GW2 for years, like, I raided in WoW. I committed to a schedule and I worked my real life around that schedule. I was willing to do that, because raiding in WoW was like an entire epic experience that just went beyond challenging fight mechanics.
Like, it was about defeating a very hard boss that required practice and then getting loot from that boss in the form of the items that changed your character’s ability to influence the game world. Like, I won an item off a boss and I now was a stronger character. I was able to bring more to my team in the next upcoming boss fight. Receiving that item in that context is an entire experience in an of itself.
The raids weren’t just a feature in the expansion; they were what the expansion was about. They were not only woven into the lore and story, but were the conclusion of that story. Everything in the PvE in the expansion was leading up to raids. Now, that creates issues with accessibility among players, which is a seperate issue, but they were epic.
It’s just not the case here. It’s just a sloth lol. It’s a far far cry from the excitement that drove me to commit my time and sanity to eventually reach and kill the Lich King in WotLK.
Like, people hated Jar Jar, not only, because he was annoying, but he was like a glaring, perfect representation of every atrocity that George Lucas had commited against a beloved sci fi universe. If there was anything, anything at all, in this game that could sum up all the reasons I am dissatisfied and disillusioned with GW2 and raids in a single picture, it’s that sloth right there lol.
