Magic Find - Chests
Would be nice if all the total stats currently on your armour etc. were viewable somewhere so you could see exactly what you have (Not just the main power precision etc but the minor ones…like magic find)…or am i missing something
No spider, it wouldnt be nice to have gear viewable. What if someone is switching specs, and they are trying to attain gear for that spec, so they have a …. orgy of different attributes. How is that fair? Are you going to deny him tokens because of his gear set up? When he has to do that dungeon to get the gear he needs?

He isn’t saying add an inspect feature but allow players to see their own magic find stat total.
I would love to see Magic Find and other things on the Character Sheet.
Chests have a better loot to make up for magic find not effecting their loot table
I don’t consider blues and greens (which compose majority of what i get from chests) as a better loot table.
They only work on creature kills, chests however have a better table then normal kills. We wanted to avoid the game play of killing a boss and then having to equip your whole Magic Find set before opening the chest.
Also magic find is calculated from when the creature is killed so it’s also not viable to use your normal gear set kill a boss then switch to magic find.
Yes, but that just results in people keeping magic find equipped all the time… To their party’s disadvantage.
Magic Find sucks. It’s essentially required for “farming” in Diablo 3… And it’s pretty much required to farm in Guild Wars.
I haven’t really seen any exotic drops at all playing without Magic Find gear.
I’ll get crucified for this, I’m sure, but here goes:
Since there are (or SEEM to be) two types of “chests” in the game, persistent PvE chests such as those found in and around PvE zones & at the end of jumping puzzles (i.e. those that do not “spawn”), and those that spawn after a meta-event or a dragon (where you cannot loot the dragon’s corpse, for example), are BOTH immune to one’s magic find percentage?
My guildies and I have been testing dragon events (spawning chests, not persistent) for the last few weeks, and here is an example:
Guild 10% magic find for 3 days is active, full party of 5 guildies fights Tequatl the Sunless (not a lvl 80 event). Two party members are in full MF gear/weapons/omnoms, with MF at 185% and 190%, including the guild 10%. Each loots 2 rares, a lvl 80 crest, and greens from the spawned chest. Three party members are in karma armor, with no MF except the guild 10%, and each loots a lvl 65 medallion, and a bunch of blues.
So we keep our eyes on the dragon timers, and hit Shatterer and Claw of Jormag the same night. Again, the two loaded up with MF pull rares, including orbs and crests, and an exotic from the Frozen Chest, and the three with nothing but the guild 10% MF loot lvl 65 medallions and a bunch of blues, even from the Frozen Chest. Three events, not even a green for the non-MF guildies.
So we try again the next night (all 3 dragon events), the only difference being the non-MF guildies loot a green or two with their blues.
One player, seeing what his guildies are getting, buys MF armor & accessories, 5 Runes of the Traveler and one Rune of the Pirate, and gets an omnon bar from another guildie. First dragon event we do, he gets his first exotic ever, a rare, an orb, a crest, and some greens and blues. With his new set of MF gear, we see him getting much better results from dragon-spawned chests (as well as normal drops, but that’s to be expected). No significant changes for the other 4 guildies.
Coincidence? It sure doesn’t seem like it.
Isaiah, can you calrify? Are all chests created equal?
All chests are not created equal, the dragon chests and temple events will have a slightly better loot table than other chests found about the world. But MF only affects monster kills. Also your sample size for testing this theory is way too small you need at least 30 or more trials to get a good idea if magic find works on chests or not(which it shouldn’t).

This little quote has caused a lot of confusion because it says one thing on the forum but its the complete opposite in the game. Everyone on the forum runs around saying the exact same thing but it isn’t really true. No matter what type of gear you have on, you get the same type of drops as everyone else. 0% or 100%+ you still get the same crap from monster drops. But magic find DOES NOT work on any chests, chests whether its there or its a boss chest it does not affect the loot, they are random and frustrating. Again magic find does not help you find more of anything nor anything better than anyone else. The loot system is based of a pure RNG meaning tag anything and you get something and some days you’ll get good stuff other days you get crap. Magic isn’t working right now. Let me say it again, magic find does not work!!!
I Agree, Magic Find doesn’t work Right* RnG is Rng and a Game who is too much RnG Will cause many players to Never, Ever, Ever Being able to achieve their Goals ( LodeStones )pst*Charged._
While I did get my one and only exotic from a JP chest without any mf gear, I always get “better” (green+) from dragon chests wearing mf gear.
In fractals on the other hand I always get same, no mf or full mf only matters for killing mobs there.
So my guess would be: dragon chests are bugged. But doesnt really matter. Just use mf food, you dont have to go full mf to get something good.
I can go full set if mf gear with food and gem booster and still only get trash and blues pretty much all the time. Of course with out it I get the same thing so I would like this obviously broken system scraped

This is not true. Any player can achieve any Lodestone goal via straight gold and the Trading Post. RNG is RNG is another way of saying “grind grind grind”. Sell enough ectos, ori, mithril, even junk to the vendor and you can buy whatever you want in lodestones.
If you are short on time and/or patience to grind out gold, there is always the gem store.

I have done this same thing with a group of my friends here and it had very similar results that you had. And to this day there is one with no MF gear he has yet to get a even rare out of the dragons chest. For clarification those of us with MF gear were killing dragons with MF gear on for the entire battle not switching at chest now get more rare/exotic than not. Maybe coincidence maybe not but I’ll call it my lucky armor the dragon runs….

I bought MF gear to farm mobs in Cursed and tried it on the new dungeon. I did see the difference. I dont know why people keep repeating “He said it does not work on chests”, because he does not say that. The pure assumption seems wrong because the thing I understood in the message was that If you kill a boss (who drops chest) without MF and then attempt to equip MF and open chest…it does not work. So I go on to assume that the only way MF gear will count toward a boss chest is if the boss is killed with the MF gear equiped where the loot is calculated with consideration of MF after boss is killed.
I will continue to test this theory…

He said it only works on creature kills, which implies it doesn’t work on chests, obviously. And as for dungeon chests, how many times did you test MF armor on it?
New bunker meta sux
A boss is a creature right? Its a mob? We kill it. He said that Chest loot gets calculated after boss is killed on the spot which is what happens if you kill an ordinary creature. So even if you swap to your MF gear b4 you pick up the loot from the creature the loot wont change. Therefore he says they didnt want people swaping gear b4 chest so they made it that loot is calculated b4 chest is opened when boss is killed.
A chest is pretty much loot dropped by a boss after its death. Killing a boss with MF should affect its drop just like how killing a ordinary mob with MF affects its drop too. Is there any other GM’s who have clarified this or is this statement the only one that GW2 community has been basing the useful/less-ness of MF gear?

You’re misreading his post. Read the posts before his first.
There is a post before the first? I’ve been searching for a statement from a GM across the forum that says anything about MF+Chests but this is the only one and he does not say chests are not affected by MF, just that switching to MF gear b4 opening a chest is meaningless. Had another run and went thru a DE in Cursed shore.
In the DE in cursed shore I equiped my zerker gear while killing and then changed to MF gear to pick up drops…blue gear + few silver. Next I killed using MF gear and picked up drops…greens, 1 rare and more silver.
In the MWF dungeon taking into account that this is my 12th run today, I ran using MF gear through the entire dungeon…which was a hastle cause I felt so weak lol but I got a few rare gear drops and nearly all other green drops (expected with full MF gear+foods). The boss I attacked with MF and killed using MF gear. The drop was the usual junk but with an exotic insignia. I know this is no proof that MF works but I made 3g out of that one run where as I was making about 1.5g using zerker gear.

I don’t understand how this is still confusing people. He specifically says, it only affects loot from creature kills. His exact words are “They only work on creature kills, chests however have a better table then normal kills.” Which means, chests are different and are NOT affected by MF gear. Chests aren’t dropped from creature kills, they are a result of completing an objective, which just so happens to be killing a boss in most cases.

I dont understand why people are taking this assumption as the word of god lol. There is nothing that says chests dont get affected by MF. “chests however have a ‘better’ table then normal kills” does not mean chests are rubish dont use MF it means MF affects it less then it would on normal mobs. Test it out yourself mates. Need a GM come in and say “MF does not work on chests”. I dont know why I’m trying to convince others lol. Its working for me if you trust the assumption that chests + MF = zilch then go ahead but 3rd run of MWF and got my second exotic insig. Gl and HF

LOL @ your quote of Schopenhauer.
The devs already commented on the subject, so really it’s a done deal. He said, “They only work on creature kills.” If you feel it works for you, I am happy for you. But, you are not the first and, certainly wont be the last, poster to try and “prove” something like this.
Come back when you have run 100 times without MF gear and 100 times with MF gear. Running it a couple times means nothing.
As the topic sais.
Does magic find count for chests or only monsters you kill?

These are the first two posts in this thread. The first is a question and the second is a dev answering the question. Using my reading comprehension, I can see that the they that the dev was referring to in his statement “They only work on creature kills” implies that he’s referring to MF since he is answering the OP’s question.
Furthermore, you can look at the OP’s question for another clue. He asks whether magic find counts for chests or only monsters you kill. The dev states it only works on creatures you kill thus stating that MF does not work on chests.
You can read the devs other statement in his post about wanting to avoid the game play of killing a boss and then having to equip your whole Magic Find set before opening the chest. From this you can gather that they MF does not affect chests since that’s not what the devs want.
I know that you really wanted MF to affect chests but sadly they do not. They still affect drops from enemies and there are plenty of opportunities to take advantage of that. Good luck!

Sword cuts both ways; you’re ridiculing us for saying it doesn’t affect chests.
Good job, though.
Glad you guys enjoyed my quote lol, kind of a quote buff. I like how Ay anaysed the question with the answer and it made sense to my sceptic mind. But after this many replies, I don’t understand why a Gm would not write a few words to clear up the mystery.

I ran it again a couple times last night, same friend. I have all magic find ruins and he has none. I received all rare insignias and he got exotics. To me, it is pretty obvious from the second post in this thread that MF doesn’t affect chests. I think you are just getting lucky and associating that with MF working on chests. I am happy for you that you are getting exotics, but that doesn’t prove your hypothesis.
Me and my mate are farming southsun cove events right now.I wear some MF gear eating Chocolate omnom berry cream + Booster which grant final MF around 300% (340% if Omnom cream work). While my mate use Full rare MF set and eating Omnom bar + booster which net him around 450% MF.
Results are that I mostly got green from Riot events , while my mate got a least 1 rare from each box.In the end I got bag full of master works items while hot got +15 rare items in the same time span run.
Don’t know if it because of DR kick in or just the MF diffrent.Because when southsun up I go there with a non MF toon and got an exotic some rares from event chest.

Is this still true, or has it been changed with the new system?
Namely, I don’t think I ever received a rare from a jumping puzzle chest before the new MF system. I never used MF gear. Now, with the account MF, I seem to get rares from JP chests on a regular basis.
Or is it possible JP chests were reworked?

Its raining rares/exotics from chests.
