Magnetite shards after clearing Spirit Vale
I was at 439 yesterday before I started raiding, and after clearing all 3 bosses (with a few wipes along the way) I’m at 493, so just over halfway to the cap.
Hitting the shard cap is voluntarily and not mandatory. It isn’t grind to put in additional rewards for additional clears. I’m not sure what the big deal is.

It’s pretty necessary to do so if you want any specific drop, the drop rate on unique drops is pretty bad for content that can only be cleared once a week. I’m at 6 kills on VG, 5 on Gorseval, 3 on Sabetha, and I’ve only gotten a mini and greatsword from VG, a mini and backpack from Sabetha, and nothing from Gorseval.
All I really want from raids is a tentacle staff and possibly a Gorseval mini, and it looks like I’ll have to farm magnetite shards to get them.

The fact that you cant just reset and clear it again without swapping players. Some are always going to get the short end of the stick until we can manually reset.

I’ve never had an issue finding someone to open a fresh instance for us and then leaving the team.

Well its nice that you have friends that havent cleared the raid on the first day. The only people we have that havent cleared it are those that want to. So someone who hasnt capped shards has to sit out.
A reset makes sense though. Rewards are capped. I dont know why we cant manually reset like in almost every other MMO with raids.

So groups that wipe multiple times while trying to clear 3 bosses cap out on shards while groups that clear all in bosses in fairly few attempts or just one, have to find other ppl to do the bosses with again just to cap on shards?
Also I already tired getting guild mates/frens to open a fresh instance for my group and every time, they ask me to let them in the group. Which means one of my core group member has to sit out. It gets compounded as my core group is made of groups of 2 or 3 frens(Its basically a pug), so if I ask one person to sit of then a few other ppl will leave with them. Keep in mind that there’s always gonna be questions of why one person has to leave over another, if no one volunteers to leave. This is gonna lead to further problems.
In any case the actual question in this thread has not been answered yet. Does anyone know if this is working as intended or just another bug that Anet has not fixed.

Possibly a better system would be each boss being allocated a certain number of shards (30 VG, 30 Gorse and 40 Sabetha) and you get given the shards for failed attempts as now, when you kill each boss you are gifted the remaining shards (obviously if you have gained 30 shards from VG by failing you stop being given them).
This makes killing them well a reward, though it may discourage people going into the instance with groups which struggle – its a tough balance Anet need to get right (remember this game was not founded on raiding so they are trying to keep wipes and the learning process rewarding – and inspire experienced players to go help newer players).
