I’ve yet to see the inside of a single dungeon and I’ve got two toons in the 70s.

The reason? I’d quite like to do them with guild mates, people I play with and know. However apparently (and this is just what I’m told – remember not managed to get a guild group together once yet) – they’re far too hard and not worth the effort.

I mean, what the actual hell? This is meant to be an mmo, a group game, but I’m told that in terms of effort vs reward dungeons don’t even appear on the scale.

If I’ve got any hope of seeing anything of this game other than WvW and open world PVE then guilds are not going to help me (I’ve been in two – left the first one for this very reason) and I’ve got no choice but to use LFG, something which should be optional. And yet when it comes to representing and earning points for the guilds they’ll happily lap those up. Where’s the return?

Has anyone else had this experience? Surely this is a big sign that something is majorly amiss? I mean a group game where people don’t want to play the group content?!

Some are hard (i heard), arah, coe, but AC, cof, SE, hotw aren’t that hard (most paths) even with pugs. And i absolutely will not say that the dungeons are too hard, i would say to easy.

I’m not particularly experienced with dungeons and I haven’t fallen in with a guild that I’ve bonded with yet, so most of my experience is with solo PVE content. Back when I had friends that played, we did Ascalon Catacombs and it was pretty tough. Caudecus Manor (sp?) was pretty kitten tough too. One of the biggest issues I was having was understanding what it was exactly, that was hurting me. In Caudecus Manor for instance, there was one boss who was constantly killing me…I’m assuming it was from retaliation or something of the sort. I would go in, melee a few times, start dying from something, then dodge a couple of times, then run to the back of the room in a panic….then die.

I guess the best advice I could give is to keep searching for a helpful guild that you can join TS/Vent with and they can walk you through dungeons and tell you how each encounter works.

Your guild mates could just be bad players. Go join another guild with decent players who know what they’re doing. To call all dungeons hard is simplistic. There are easy and kittenes.

Dungeons are not hard, they are only hard if your group chooses to do their own thing and not act in a coordinated effort. There are plenty of dungeon running guilds out there, ranging from full speed clearing to casual. You don’t even need to be on the same server so you aren’t limited to just available guilds on your server. Just take some time to look around, it won’t be hard to find a guild that is happy to help new people learn dungeons.

Not sure if you understood what I’m trying to say. I can’t bash the dungeons as I’ve not played them as you said – but two guilds and I’ve still not been able to find a group prepared to spend time running them. That tells me there either isn’t enough incentive to run them for time invested (too long/poor loot), or they’re too hard.

Actually what it likely means is that too many of them believed the hype about difficulty and wouldn’t even try. Dungeons are one of the best ways of earning gold in the game even if you don’t try and speed clear content. You just can’t do them with the same ease of open world content, they require a certain amount of coordination. Unfortunately your thread has now been moved to the dungeon subforum where you are going to get just as many flame comments as helpful ones. There is a stickied thread on this forum aimed specifically for people such as yourself, and also a dungeon mentor thread with additional people willing to help new people learn to run dungeons without being forced to play a certain way.

Most players in this game are really bad, they need champ trains to make money or farm LS content ect. Toss them into an area were knowledge of fights and your class/ build are recommended/required, they fall immediately (I’ve seen pugs wipe to the silver mob at the very beginning of AC before, joined after they had started).

Most dungeons in this game are actually pretty easy. IF you do the homework on the path and truly know your class/build and can execute the teams gameplan it goes very smoothly. The bad part is once you “get” dungeons, its hard to go back to normal pve where the challenge of open world is essentially 0 short of soloing some of the harder champions. Bonus points for killing the QD troll before the train can get there

In short if you want to do dungeons in a guild group, join a guild that actually runs content instead of just farming champs in FG or QD or sitting in LA showing off their gem purchased town clothes. (full disclosure, my guild does all of the above, but at least has a core of good dungeon runners).

Any good dungeon guild will take you below 80 as long as your gear is up to date and they don’t exclusively speed clear. If the guild requirement is 80 pass and keep looking. A good guild is key to learning dungeons trying to learn by pugging will likely be a painful experience.

I assume OP is new to the game and talking from a new player coming to this game perspective. If you’re familiar with the mechanics of the dungeon anything such as running naked should be possible. But from OP perspective, no. Just no.

Beside simply as how AI works in this game, all you need is cleave damage and stack behind something. PvE #nutshell or at least dungeon. That applies especially to CoE, where basically all fights are like that. Stack behind something, let the mob stack nice and tight around your team, then cleave them off with PBAoE.

Dungeons in this game are incredibly easy when done with a group of people that know what they do.

My advice would be to look out for a newbie friendly guild/people willing to help out and explain.
Once you know what to do and have adequate equipment (which is easy to get), you should be fine.

It’s simply not true.
They are not hard, they are created for GROUP play. If you play as a group and understand obvious “tells” from monsters about their attacks it is become extremely easy and this is where problem starts, because with neat group dungeons are boring
But as a reward you get a tons of loot and tons of money. Dungeon runs are the best way to earn money, as far as I know

Dungeons ARE tough. There’s no question about it. However, they’re also doable by experienced, well-geared groups who know how to coordinate with each other and deal with the (usually) special mechanics of bosses. Almost every dungeon tends to have one mechanic that, when the appropriate counter is provided, makes it fairly simple. In AC, it’s Stability and Conjured weaponry. In CM, it’s reflect skills. In TA, it’s condition removal and multi-hit ranged weaponry.

Basically, once you know what to expect, and adjust your build to compensate for it accordingly, they’re not THAT hard.

Pugging is not optional. It’s mandatory. Guilds are optional. Embrace #puglife.

I remember my first encounter in a dungeon. It was Caudecus Manor story mode. The rest of the group were taking their time, and I saw a group of 4 thieves none of whom were veterans. I decided to do what I would do in open world content and took them on by myself. Even though I was a tanky guardian with a shield I died really fast. That’s when it occurred to me that dungeons were hard. They are designed so that five moderately well geared characters with a reasonable understanding of tactics will have to work together to get through.

Now I run an attack oriented (mostly zerker) guardian and never bring in a shield and any combat in which I’m downed I consider to be disappointing. There is a shift in expectations on entering a dungeon, but it all becomes easier with experience. Also, dungeons can be run with non-optimised groups in under 15 minutes and provide over one gold as a reward. That to me makes them worth the time.

As others have said. It sounds like the people you’ve been playing with. Dungeons can be challenging and enjoyable, if the people in your group are relaxed about it.

I think a part of the problem is that people get used to steamrolling through other content (like champ trains) and when they have to concentrate a bit, or try a small amount, can’t be bothered.

So yea, look elsewhere for others to group with. People do play dungeons, and its not that this game is somehow a bad mmo as was implied, but rather that some people don’t want to do what you want to. Good luck finding some new people to run with!

What’s wrong with LFG tool, it’s a great way to form parties that span over all servers for a quick start. I assume you’re talking story mode dungeons, once you’ve competed one there’s no reason to do it again, dungeon guild or not. Just join a group in LFG and get it over with. I’ve done them with randoms on all my characters, doing story mode unlocks expl. mode, and there’s always someone doing it for the first time and I’ve yet to see anyone object to that.

If you mean expl. mode then wait until 80 like everyone else, leveling with heartquests is fast enough and you will want a character with 100% map completion eventually anyway for when doing guild missions etc.

Actually, most dungeon are freaking hard the first few time you do it. I remember the first time i played AC with my guild. This was at the very beginning of the game so nobody really knew what to do and we were all between level 35 and 60. That was a mess. After 3 hours we were still at the room, protecting hodgin, and we simply gave up. Now, we can do the all path in less than 15min and the path was change to be a little be more challenging. Once you understand how to play your profession and that you understand how to go through the dungeon its really easy.

And as for the reward. Its the faster way to gain gold in the game without playing the TP.

I’d say the biggest thing missing from the PvE content in this game is harder content.

The Story missions are designed to cater to people who wants an easier challenge that what’s found in the Explorable version.

The first time you enter a dungeon like ac exp it is fairly difficult for the most part, then you start to learn about the game, the path, and about mechanics and your runs start to get faster, to the point that the dungeons become trivial to complete if you have a good group. The dungeons can be difficult for some pug groups because they bring the wrong builds/classes or they try to do something they see in a speed clear vid that they simply don’t have the skill or dps to do themselves.

Many of the people that complain about the difficulty of dungeons are mainly complaining that they can’t tank or heal in the game or that their suboptimal build isn’t that good in a dungeon. The people that want to tank or heal just have the wrong game since gw2 isn’t meant to have a trinity. The people that want to bring a suboptimal build to a dungeon usually have a role playing reason to do so, or they want to be unique to be unique and those people usually repeat the gw2 catch phrase of “play how you want.” If you run an optimal build and know how to dodge, you can easily do every path in the game very quickly as long as you’re running with people that also play optimally.

Very true. These dungens are almost to easy. I even manage to pug them with all the staff camping guardians, greatsword camping warriors, and bearbow rangers. Most important thing is to get experience. They can be done with all the pugs just takes you a bit longer if your lucky or if not. Drop them while.ypu can and grab a new party.

I run dungeons nightly for anyone in my guild needing any specific run. The only dungeon I don’t (currently) run is Arah. Add me in game and message me next time you are on and we’ll run whatever dungeon you want. I can also invite you into the Dungeon Mentors guild as a student and you will see a whole list of mentors willing to teach you any path of any dungeon if I’m not on to do so myself.

Okay I don’t actually know about that last one, but how on Earth do WvW’ers get enough gold to buy so many Arah paths from me

So as far as gold return goes for actually playing the game, dungeons are right at the tippy top. I suppose bouncing from one open world boss to another isn’t too bad, if you like the sensation of taking a cheese grater to your forehead for hours at a time.

None of them are hard in groups of 5, I disagree sorry. My first time doing them I was taking deaths and such, yeah, but none of them were hard to get done. I also have never worn non-zerk equipment on here before.
