Guild Wars 2

So currently I play / main a Necro.. but I have heard repeatedly that we’re not very good for dungeons.. etc.. so I was thinking of rolling a class JUST for dungeons/fractals.

Anyone have some suggestions on which class is the most useful to groups?

I love elementalists in my team. One person able to take care of almost all buffs you need while delivering good dps and support (swirling) and bringing fgs is just nuts.

Mesmers (portal and feedback), Warriors and Guardians (overall good), Thieves (stealth), Elementalists (only for AC though).

Ele’s are pretty good everywhere.

If I had to choose one class for dungeoning, I’d choose guardian if I’d be pugging and warrior if I’d be doing organized runs.

Pretty much this. If you can deal with the fact that they’re squishy as hell i think ele is a solid choice. If being squishy ins’t your thing i’d say mesmer, good mesmers on pugs are always welcome, their utility is nice and they have a pretty easy time surviving due to blurred frenzy.

Hmm, I’ve been playing an elementalist. I don’t feel squishy, but I don’t feel like I’m bringing anything unique to the party. Anything I’m missing?

18-21 permanent party might, fury, high dps, projectile absorb, fiery greatsword (i.e. highest dps in the game). Oh, tons of blast finishers, blinds and cc.

Good elementalists can bring a lot to a party… Firy greatsword is one thing, it can benefit another member of the team’s dips as well as your own.
This being said i am a terrible elementalist, so when I feel like being faux good in pugs I grab my guard or warrior.

Take a look at Zehlyn’s guide. But botton line, with 30 into fire any elementalist can bring perma fury to your team while providing alot of fire fields, blast finishers and projectile defenses (swirling winds), along with FGS and some cheap healing. I’m pretty sure you can do a quick trait swap on the fly to have a better synergy with LH as well if you want to.

Make a warrior. Best for pugs, dps, and everything

But Swiftpaw you know how close I am to a 900s Filter, I need some infractions.

Warrior/Guardians are good in almost any DG situation.
Mesmer might take a while to get used to, but it’s the easiest class to play full zerk.
Thieves and Elementalists are good too, but they’re extremely squishy – while a well played one is useful in DG, i’d suggest to do not look at them as first “zerker geared” character.

Other classes:
-ranger. Pets are crap and takes too much DPS out of the player. You have some nice group buffs tho. And if you can get the sword auto working you’ll have some decent DPS too.
-necro. Necs do have a decent DPS build – but it’s lacking in versatility and group buffs/utility department.
-engi. It’s good for might and vuln stacking. Have a lot of access to various fields, utility and blast. But, that’s it. Also, best dps option (‘nades) might drive you nuts as they’re a pita to use.

Warrior all the way and thief if you are masoshist like me . I don’t like
buffing my party outside of dis banner and " For Great Justice!!!".
If you like being selfish pick warrior if not then guardian . I’ve
only seen like 5 eles in my life using FGS so I don’t know what a
pro ele can do :S , pretty sure warr still better DPS if you don’t
use FGS against a wall .
And anyway , war 20k hp in zerk gear , ele 10k hp ? Why struggling
when there’s an easy road …

Because that 10k hps isn’t a huge difference when Elementalists can block and dodge anything the bosses dish out.

Engies are pretty strong at lifting bads, if i’m not messing up my combos, you can pull off 1400+1400+2500+2000 group wide green numbers with 0 healing power without dropping bandages. Plus 17ish seconds of regeneration. It makes me wonder why the hell people run guardians in healing gear.

are you kittening kittened? tanking the burn = no scholar bonus = dps reduction.

also to OP’s question I would suggest warrior/guardian for PUGs since they are pretty group independent and offer good buffs on their own. warriors are really tanky too even in DPS setup so even having weak pugs shouldn’t kill you most of the time.

eles can solo carry team DPS but I would never pug with mine (once she hits 80) because I will probably go insane from PUGs picking up my conjure weapons and failing to use them properly.

I do not care about scholar runes , I use ruby orbs 4eva . It’s nearly impossible to stay above 90% hp 100% of the time . I can’t count
how many times people ping their scholar runes and end up
laying on the ground . Wasted money is wasted.

scholar runes only need to be up 25% of the time to be better than ruby orbs. if you can’t manage this on a warrior…

By decent party you mean this group? Don’t take the advice given at the end of a world record run and try to apply it to a standard pug. Back in the days of CoF speedfarming where groups advertised sub 7 min runs or kick this advice could of been applicable, but the standard has really fallen since then.

Who said zerk gear? It was about the scholar runes 10% bonus when your hp is above 90% . Staying alive in a zerk gear is not a problem even if you’re
terrible, but keeping 90% hp is not always possible that’s why I prefer orbs .
I use them for roaming on my thief aswell and im pretty sure that
scholar bonus is useless in wvw, only for the opening strikes.

Thats quite a weird thing to say…Your obviously not skilled enough for PvE or WvW. Guan (the down to earth one, not euro theory Guan) told you if you stay at 90% for even just a quarter of a fight your scholar benefits. Indeed I main a warrior, Have been playing thief for about 9 months aswell xD, My CoF video was recorded at 8-12 FPS, I have a 36 second Lupi kill video at 5 FPS, I would record a solo if mine but 6 mins at that FPS really trying to focus eh…I could screenshot it when the experience pops up if you like??

Im actually going to stop checking this thread, its unfair for the OP who came here for advice. OP, Guardian, Warrior and Ele are all good choices even mesmer. Just Ranger will be hard to learn because of the way the sword auto works, Engi is something just being integrated into more experienced team although your no liability to pug DPS. But guardians and warrior in pugs can never be to many.

Anyways, with scholar staying 90% hp at 25% of the time is only marginally better than ruby, is it not? I’m thinking you have to be 90% hp at least half the time for the scholar to justify its cost?

That strongly depends on your judgement of the costs. Though it should not be too difficult to stay above 90% half of the time.

If you want a reliable character for dungeons avoid elementalist at all costs.

Everyone wants ele for FGS bug, once it will be fixed ele will be the usual subpar profession.

If you want to be sure to be accepted everywhere choose Warrior….almost every party wants 3 of them
If you don t like warrior choose guardian.
And finally mesmer or maybe thief.

Don t choose a gimmick profession based on glitches and awful outside that.

How can they “fix” something that is working as intended?
