Practiced meleeing this dude the past 3 days to finally make this video. Obviously Wethospu did this first, so props to him, but my main goal was to explain this fight since all of my dungeon videos are commented and educational, hopefully trying to make general pugs more knowledgable.
Part of the reason for this was also to help my guild as well, since I am currently working on my Arah videos which is the last dungeon I need walkthrough videos for. Since my guides are speed run guides, it’s not very “speedy” unless we show how to melee GL as a group. So hopefully those guides will be coming soon, it all depends on which people I can get on at the same time in my guild.
Now that I know this fight I’m pretty confident I can do it with my Axe/Mace build I normally use as well. While learning his moves, GS whirlwind helps a ton, since with Axe/Mace + Axe/Shield you’re going to need to swap alot more and use your burst skill to get endurance back since you don’t have that whirlwind, so it’s harder to concentrate on learning moves when you have to juggle constant swaps, eviscerate, and endurance management as well. I’ll be using my normal build for the Arah walkthroughs though.
Thanks.
P.S. Devs fix your auto attack bug making dodges fail so I don’t have to turn it off and manually click!

About commentary, you can easily melee as a mes, feedback works for AoE in phase 2 when you stand in it (you could also use ranged weapon and use feedback, blink into it for some defense during p2). Probably most proffesions are valid for melee there, I do that on mesmer, ele, guardian and thief.
When you mentioned dodging last grub, you probably meant dodging kd effect. If that’s so, you can’t do it without reckless dodge. Reckless dodge allows to dodge a lot more than just a necrid trap (simin’s petrify, giant’s fear, probably stonetouch’s petrify).
Now that you’ve done it, try doing it next time without reckless ;P
Oh, and maybe if more people had seen that, I wouldn’t be kicked by pugs anymore ;<
Great job!
But I’m really curious why would you want use Axe/Mace + Axe/Shield against Lupicus.
Mace offers little for that fight. Skill 4 gives some Vulnerability with halved duration. Skill 5 doesn’t affect Lupicus.
Axe has great Skill 1. Skill 2 seems more trouble than worth when you can’t dodge during it. Skill 3 is ok.
If you use Eviscerate you lose on-demand Endurance refill. This gets even worse when you have just one burst skill.
Biggest reason for Whirlwind is to constantly have at least 2 evades ready for life-steal attacks in phase 3.

Yea phase 1 and 2 could be done by any class since it’s just about dodging normally, really the main difficult part is the dome in phase 3 for other classes.
Yea I meant dodging the kd effect for the last grub, I thought it might be due to the warriors reckless dodge as well, but wasn’t sure. I end up saving my Frenzy as a stun break if I mess up anyways. Oh and I’ve actually never dodged the petrify attacks because we usually end up casting stability before it goes off since it works as well. When I do the 4-1 simin method stand your ground + balanced stance is usually enough to burst him down quickly without getting petrified since we use 1 guard 3 war 1 memser comp and kill him in like 20 seconds, but thought it was just dodging in general and wasn’t reckless for that one, thanks for the info though.
I would think it would be alot harder without reckless for phase 3 :x
And that’s why I never pug… just really don’t have the patience at this point which is why I joined and recruited for an “elite” dungeon guild in the first place. I enjoy making videos trying to teach people which reaches a broader audience, but actually having to join pugs and teach only a few people while being subjected to possible “scrubs” just isn’t a fun use of my time :x
Great job!

Mace is mainly just for a bit of extra damage from Vuln and the fact that Mace 5 hits twice for damage, since there’s nothing else I would really use in my offhand. I’m actually interested if Vigor from warhorn stacks with signet of stamina though now that I think about it…
But yes, Eviscerate would basically be for the on demand endurance refill, so I would have to manage it a bit more and possibly not use it every 10 seconds. Main reason I keep Axe in both of my hands is because of dps since their is no interruption when switching to an offhand with the same mainhand. My normal dungeon build is my Axe/Mace + Axe/Axe build which is really the only way you can match GS damage on average which I figured out from my dps tests.
In this video with greatsword, I never used my burst skill for endurance, and whirlwind + sigil of energy on shield was enough to always have 2 dodges. So I figure by replacing whirlwind with eviscerate endurance, it would give me enough with my Axe build.
I tried it early on and can get through phase 1 and 2 very easily with the Axe build since it’s more lenient, but switched to GS when learning phase 3. Now that I know his phase 3 attacks well, I do believe it’s possible, it’s just going to take some endurance management without whirlwind. I dunno, we’ll see.
My main focus is to get my Arah walkthrough vids done first, then I’ll probably revisit it.

True, other classes are forced to bring defensive skills for necrid trap while warrior is able to get more dps skills (as ele you’re forced to bring 3 cantrips, as mes I take blink, mantra of concentration and feedback or signet of illusions to get another distortion)
I would think it would be alot harder without reckless for phase 3 :x
True but Robert Hrouda said you shouldn’t be able to get out of the bubble with just a dodge ;p
Though it’s quite possible to do it on ele (I did whole p2 and p3 once but that could be luck) but that’s thanks to the insane amount of defensive skills you take and my weapon set (d/f)

I’m mostly pugging arah for laugh. Having few dungeon masters on board is even better. A vast amount of them are so bad it’s not even remotely imaginable.

I don’t deal vuln on my chars but doesn’t it last a fraction of a second on lupi, like on few other bosses (Alphard for instance)?

Actually I was able to watch the video now. Nice to see you using an Axe, I was planning to use it on my next try (to get 6-7 mins with Banner of Discipline instead of Signet of Stamina). Axe actually allows you to use weapon-swap in full-effect when both sets have good damage (and utilize Sigil of Energy better).
I personally think you will have extremely hard time with Axe/Mace + Axe/Shield (Lupicus can use really nasty combinations).
And I must warn you, on phase 2 that big AoE spawns a lot more circles with 5 players. :P
