New to 80; What do I need to do?
I’m a bit confused by your question. How did you level in the first place?

Uhm there’s nothing you absolutely need to do, but if you wanted ideas for what you can do at level 80 – well obviously since you’re in the dungeons forum you want to try out some dungeons, right?
Most would agree that the most challenging PvE content would be the final dungeon, Arah, and Fractal of the Mists (FotM) at level 40+.
You’d be working towards getting a full set of exotic gear and ascended accessories for your level 80 if you haven’t already done so. You can get ascended rings and backpiece from FotM, amulet from daily laurels and accessories either from daily laurels or guild commendations.
You can work your way towards exotic gear by doing dungeons – each time you run a dungeon you get some tokens, and when you accumulate enough tokens you can exchange them for armour pieces. The dungeon token vendor is in Lion’s Arch, Marriner WP I think. It’s a row of merchants – you won’t miss it on your map. Talk to each merchant to see which armour set you like the look of, and what stat combination you want to use. That’ll decide which dungeon you will run to get the tokens you need.
What kind of stat combination you should get is really your choice, and depends on your class and your playstyle, but most people would recommend ‘berserker’ (zerker) gear which is Power, Precision, % Critical Damage for optimal DPS. Of course if your damage largely comes from applying a large amount of conditions then you’d want Condition Damage gear (Rabid or Carrion). If you need gear advice it’s better to post in your profession’s subforum, but you can ask here and we can try to help you.
Also you may decide you want to get some gold instead, to buy cultural armour or work towards your legendary or commander or whatever. Path 1 of the Citadel of Flame (CoF) is currently the most profitable dungeon to run. This will be the door icon in Fireheart Rise. You can run there from Hoelbrak exit east > Wayfarer Foothills exit north > Frostgorge Sound exit north-east.

Definitely referring to dungeons/fractals. Would I really ask how to solo mobs in open world zones? Really?
get exotic gears… hopfully u been saving daily karma jars and get full sets from temple.

I would suggest going for pugs for cof path1 if u want a full bzsker sets.
If you use lfg.com for first time.. avoid going to farming group since they check gears.

Get at least full exotic gear with the stats you want on your character, and run some dungeon PUGs to learn the basics.

Then might I suggest wording your question better? You coulda mentioned dungeons and fractals without blanketting all of PvE. I’m not going to automatically assume you’re an intelligent and bright human being, based upon a first-draft poorly worded question. You know, kinda like how it is in real life.
You can level up in WvW and Crafting too. It’s not that uncommon.

Just hit 80 on my first character and I would like some advice as to what I need to do to start getting into PvE and how to start preparing for it. I’m an MMO veteran but I’m new to the GW franchise so I really have no idea what to do.
Any advice/instructions would be appreciated.
I laughed when you said “how to start preparing for ‘it’”, because there is no endgame lol
Unless you’re rich, buy 76~79 Exotics instead of 80. Perhaps more importantly transmuting those is MUCH cheaper too (you only need stones instead of crystals). You lose like 5 points but save like 200%~400% of the price. Some pieces you pay only for the price of the rune inside it(or even less).
Set filters as: Prefix name, 76~79, slot, exotic. Try different prefixes and slots and note the runes(suffix). Place buy orders, don’t buy instantly.
Then spend 42k karma on an amulet from Orr Temple (if you buy armor instead you’ll be stuck with lvl 80 armor and will need crystals to transmute).
If you want to convert karma to gold, spend it on Orrian Jewlery Boxes, or on mats to craft unidentified dyes.
