[Opinion] Enrage Timers don't fit GW2.
There’s a lot of misunderstanding going on about raids, both from people who haven’t done them and people who have. The enrage timer doesn’t actually care about your stats — it only cares that your team can generate enough damage quickly enough. The simplistic approach is choosing stats|food|upgrades that buff DPS. Another approach is for people to be better at directing where their damage goes.
It’s easy enough to observe this outside of raids: if people know the mechanics, they don’t get downed as often (regardless of gear), and the fighting ends more quickly. High-DPS gear allows a less-perfect team the wiggle room to deal enough damage when targeting to make up the time they are off target.
This is why the more-skilled raid teams can succeed in Masterwork gear or with 4, 5, or 6 people (depending on the raid wing).
PUG raid groups and some guild groups skip straight to checking gear because that’s a lot easier and more reliable than checking how well someone knows their prof or how quickly they can adapt to the situation in the encounter. It isn’t so much that glass canon is required as that it makes things so much easier on the other 9 people if you are following the same game plan as they are.
So, I’m sorry you were /kicked from a raid group for having the wrong stats on your gear — that is never fun. At the same time, I urge you to watch some of the expert videos and learn why glass-cannon-y builds work and why people (rightly or wrongly) are insisting on them.
disclaimer: I have yet to participate in a successfully completed raid wing
well that topic has already been covered I believe (but I won’t go into the painful process of finding it, since the forum search tool doesn’t work)
Enrage timers are really not that important apart from a couple of bosses.(most bosses have mechanics that will kill you if your dps sucks anyways i.e sabetha platform hp,gorse updrafts, maybe sublings on sloth, madness on xera, buff stacks on KC)
That said, what kind of role were you trying to fill? Same way as in “other mmos” the only ones allowed some extra survivability in a group are the healer and the tank, if you’re filling a dps spot (condi or otherwise) you are expected to be running max dps rotations and gear, depending on your class. Generally the more time a boss takes, the more chances of a mistake happening, so ofc you want a boss to be as fast as possible
On the upside, if you’re not aware of it, you can change the stats on your ascended gear without having to re-craft anything
As a sidenote I’m really grateful for the lack of gearchecks and gear walls in gw2 and it’s a big part of the reason I’m interested in the game; there’s nothing worse than taking a break and coming back to an mmo you find out that the gear you worked so hard for is now crap and you have to grind from 0
This topic has been discussed till death tbh…
No enrage timers either means all bosses can be cheezed with no skill tanky builds where you can ignore most mechanics (already the case for some bosses, just look at brazil’s latest video of 1h long matthias kill) or they would have to balance everything around the highest defensive stats.
On top of that they’d have to redesign some bosses. Even without enrage timers gorseval’s updrafts would be gone too soon to kill him with tanky crap and sabetha’s platform would be destroyed for sure.
Other games are also more traditional MMOs whereas GW2 is an Action MMO with focus on, big surprise, active defense (i.e. negating damage by dodging and intelligent use of skills). Especially in PvE this is important and the game should never force you to go with defensive gear just to be able to do an encounter. That would be bad design.
Besides, doing raids in tanky gear is perfectly doable, see already mentioned videos of kills which take 40min+ on purpose. I actually think the only boss where enrage means wipe is Sabetha due to the cannons activating, other than that you could just ignore the enrage and keep fighting. lol
I like the fact that dodge exists to promote slightly more skillful gameplay. Padding defensive stats isn’t at all skillful, at least dodge requires action on my part whereas running nomads the stats are just there.
Also, the enrage timer isn’t the end of the world, SALT just did a 1 hour matthias kill ignoring the enrage:
If you did any semblance of research into raids (“the hardest content in the game”), you’d realize there were builds and gear you needed to have instead of just waltzing in with ‘full ascended’ whatever stats and then making it sound like it’s GW2’s fault you did no research, no preparation or anything.

Gorseval only has 4 updrafts, after that you’re done for. Similarly I doubt you could do Xera that way because of the stacks you get. Sloth would also get increasingly difficult because of the amount of evolved slublings around.
The rest… myeah probably.

Oh yeah right I keep forgetting you normally have to use updrafts at gorseval lmao
Haven’t had Xera in enrage yet, neither did I bother to check what actually happens if she goes into kittened mode, but you’re probably not wrong with that. As for Sloth, true, though you might be able to hold them at bay for a good amount of time.
Real question is why you’d want to put yourself through that anyway except being a masochist :^)

That’s probably a question for SALT to answer. :P

Probably to shut people up who complain about enrage timers…..Showing that it is possible to live even through enrage and be successful. Also probably to show how generous the timers are in the first place.
To answer the question of what Xera does in enrage, she just gets a 200% damage buff. So if you can keep up on clearing the fragments and clearing the stacks with them you could fight her indefinitely as well.
It’s already proven people can cheese through the enrage with 10 healers (1 hour Matthias). What they can’t cheese through is mechanics like only 4 updrafts at Gorseval or Platform damage at Sabetha. I wish they’d just remove enrage and add mechanics like the one in Gorseval etc.
