Please, fix FoTM!
I am only level 18 frac and I have only died once going to do the first buttons. It is a matter of hitting your remove condition and run skills to get in there. push the button for everyone to get through the gate and then running out. Also, if you die, just have everyone wait at the next gate and you can respawn.
As for the Ascalonian frac, the not being able to switch skills has to do with a bug when you get transformed, not with the fractal itself. It happens in other places through out the game and is something they are working on.

I agree that dredge is annoying. I once did dredge at level 28, and it is a monster. There’s several issues with the dredge fractal that combine together to make a nightmare:
#1: The dredge hard. They’re immune to blinds and stack up protection and counter-stun you.
#2: They are infinitely spawning. No matter what you do or how many dredge you kill, more are just going to show up.
#3: There’s a lot of them. I’m talking 20+ dredge in an area.
#4: Th goal of that mission is to have everyone split up and defenselessly camp switches by themselves while other players take forever to interract with a control box that stops the moment one dredge nicks you.
So you get separated up, forced to fight outnumbered 5:1 against some of the hardest enemies in the game while being unable to dodge or run because you have to stand immobile on switches, and you cannot kill or even fight back because the dredge infinitely spawn. There’s really no other tactic for this fractal other than to die repeatedly.
The first bit of the dredge one is easy if you do it right:
-Have one person open the first switch, the other 4 go in and kill the 2 vets at the gate while the first guy comes back down.
-When both vets are dead, have a different person go and open the second switch, and wait for all 4 people to go in (do not aggro anything).
- The second switch guy runs down, at this point you have 4 party members just inside the gate, have one of them go and suicide on the RIGHT switch (and the rest do not aggro anything).
- With the 3 party members, clear the left hand side (not aggroing the right hand side)
- Open switch, the 5th party member outside the gate runs in and helps
- Someone goes and does the console while the 3 party members take aggro off him (and it’s really easy at this point)
Done. Doesn’t take long.
I’m surprised nobody has yet to mention the invisible ascalonian mage firestorm attack
-me with 25 stacks of precision: “aggro a group of ascalonian ball”
-“ascalonian mages started to raise one of their hands, obviously they are up to no good!”
-me: those mages are up to something. let me just………
-“YOu have been downed! Fight for your life!!”
-me: wtf! what the hell hit me?
-2 seconds later, the “firestorm” that had already killed me started its animation and begun raining down on my corpse.
me: ffffffffffffffùùùùù!!!!!

Most likely you died to flame burst, not firestorm.
To agree with OP, this happened to me as well. Wanted to switch to banner at the end boss and couldn’t change skills.
