Ok, been trying mine out with a 30/30/10 build and now Brazil’s build. I have to admit that they’re capable of more damage than I thought, BUT.
-sword auto still sucks because of the anti-evasion mechanics and the only way to mitigate that is to turn off auto and slow down, which reduces deeps. somewhat taken care of by flanking with an aggro-magnet anchor, but it’s still an annoyance.
-I really don’t feel like you can take more than one ranger like this in your party and maintain top clear times, since their two main party buffs that warriors can’t bring are Spotter and Frost Spirit, which won’t stack from multiple rangers.
-I think I’m still doing more damage when I pick up an ele’s lightning hammer. That shouldn’t be the case on an aggressive damage class which it seems the ranger is supposed to be. I don’t think that’s the case for warrior, guardian, or thief.
-Pet AI and pathing still sucks kitten . I get pretty sick of seeing my Jaguar not realize an enemy has moved away, then try to catch up to them only to overshoot and waste time repositioning (go go A* pathing). He always picks the time of an enemy being at 25 vuln and QZ+Stealth being active to do this, of course.
Still, even with the caveats, not bad at all. Good enough to add mine to my dungeon alt rotation anyway.

You can evade after the first 2 autoattacks in the Sword chain and after the third attack. You just have to take some time and learn the timing. Taking more than 1 Ranger along probably isn’t worth it either, since you are really just bringing for the unique bonuses. You quite possibly are doing more damage with LH just because of how Ranger weapons work. That’s also something I’d like to test more in the future.
As far as pet AI though, it is a pain sometimes, but I don’t have as much of a problem with it as I thought I did. I guess I’ve just gotten more used to how it works, sort of like I did with Sword. Sword is still irritating at times, though.

I realize this is somewhat of a troll thread, but I would still like to point out how easy it is to kill the destroyer in one try with an optimized set up (even with 4 people its easy), so with a ranger it isn’t all that impressive.

I guess so, but people don’t have to play Ranger like I do if they don’t want to. It would help for speed clearing though.

from my limited and NOT AT ALL experienced ranger play, I’d suggest axe offhand for swap unless you know you’re going to need the evade from SB. Path of Scars is a multi-target (in a line) pull for errant mobs that aren’t in the cleave radius, and you can probably add Whirling to the reflect rotation if you have Guard and Mesmer.
I don’t know how well Whirling Defense works for having people cluster up inside the reflect boundary though.

Only problem I have with this.. is this. This is the destroyer. He’s rubbish easy. You can stand there without issue and whale on him while a guardian blocks his dragon’s tooth every so often. I find that melee’ing on ranger with the sword 1 chain to be alot more difficult in other situations, especially as glass cannon which leaves you like paper. 2 issues are this- 1 is that the auto chain can lock you in place, 2 is the pet which is gonna get destroyed in most fights so you can forget about that dps ( I’m looking @ u alpha).
The real problem I have with ranger is that it can be good dps, in select situations like the destroyer.. But these situations are few and far between. I’d like to be able to run ranger for every speedclear, and have it be viable for every part of a speedclear, not just the parts where it doesn’t matter what class you brought as long as it was glass. Also I’m interested to know where you’re placing frost spirit on Alpha, I always fantasized about having that extra 10% dmg buff.
I’m guessing a way around the crappy ( but high damage, yes) sword auto attack lock could be to pick up an ele weapon. He only really needs one hammer per alpha encounter anyways if you kill him fast enough.
|-Swiftpaw Sharpclaw [DnT]-|
Ranger dps is and never was bad but they lack utility. What could ranger offer against for instance grawl shaman? Just don’t say hunter’s call.

Alpha doesn’t really kill the pets. I was surprised that they were staying alive, but I’ve not done a CoE run yet where I’ve had a problem with them dying. The Sword chain really isn’t that bad once you are familiar with it and can make use of it effectively.

Re: Subject Alpha
By virtue of stacking and having people dodge into a pillar/wall, you’re hitting the five person cap on AOEs automagically. There was an update a while ago that changed pets into being the lowest priority for AOE, which is why you might have experienced it one way at first and then come back later to find it different.

no, I mean for the elementals that spawn. They don’t work on the shaman himself. Idea is guard pulls them in, pops a soa/wall, ranger immobilizes them all inside.

I am referring to alpha fight in particular but nice try. Pet’s still dead on alot of other stuff. Not surprised if it survives in cof, that dungeon is easy mode.
Now, back to what I was talking about with brazil before I was rudely interrupted.
Now I take it you are using the stack on him method, and the pet stands where? inside him/in front of him or behind him? Do you have to position it somehow or it just keeps itself up there? I’m just wondering how it’s taking the brunt of the aoes and if it has to deal with the frontal attack. Does protection from guard hammer give it the survival needed or is it just not getting hit at all?

Ok so he just doesn’t get hit at all :o
Last time I took my ranger in there was with a pug many months ago, and of course them not stacking/range attacking seems to have made the difference in whether pet got hit or not. Or it may have been that AoE Update.
I notice in this one you have an ele, I was thinking ranger would be better off replacing a warrior than an ele too.

He makes the assumption that in my spare time I am actively denying any evidence put forth to me. That is incorrect. The fact is that ‘slave driver’ isn’t every fight in the game and is irrelevant to what I am talking about, and also that I am really only interested in a few things here- 1.) if the pet survives at Alpha and 2.) how sword auto attack chain is going. Finally a decent and relevant video is released and I am in support of it and he doesn’t like that, well big whoop.

Alright, so you can do average dps with a ranger so what? Doesn’t change the fact that every other class can out dps them, and that they offer no sort of party support or useful utility (as you said).
The main reason why everyone hates rangers is due to the type of people who play them, aka people who’d rather sit at a safe distance and range targets. I can say from experience (I’ve played ranger for 1900 hours or so) that rangers support laziness and bad party awareness.

This is basically it in a nut shell. Against non-threats the sword and pet are fine, but once the battles go on longer or bosses become more threatening and timely dodges and precision position becomes important, the sword becomes your worst enemy and the pet dies. This situation is made worse in a pug, where bosses don’t just melt and you need to have full control of your resources during the fight. I don’t mean this in a disrespectful way, but that video shows basically an auto-attack spam for 30 seconds, content like that isn’t a good barometer for build viability.
In an organised speed clear group under ideal conditions a single ranger can do fine, if the fight is as short as this one, the sword, pet and spirit won’t reach their limitations. In a longer fight or just one which requires more dodges and you will often get killed in the sword animation and the pet and spirit will die as soon as the boss looks at them.
A build like this one really isn’t half as good outside of premade groups. While an axe warrior has guaranteed access to his banners (they don’t die) and full DPS as long as he is alive (no pet to get killed) the ranger doesn’t enjoy these luxuries. Any other class or weapon will give you an easier time positioning yourself during combat and allow you to dodge normally. The sword just doesn’t do that.
Variations of this build have been run by different rangers for a while now. Under ideal conditions it plays well, but throw in a speed bump or two and it derails faster than most builds. I’ve heard stories from players claiming to almost exclusively run the main hand sword in all dungeon/fractal content while keeping themselves and the pet alive but I’ve never seen it done. I’m sure there are some players that minimise the issues of the sword control and survivability of the pet and spirit but that’s not going to fly for most players.
@jwaz To be fair to rangers, the main hand sword is in a league of its own in terms of ranger weapon DPS. It’s not just that rangers want to sit at range, a lot of players don’t like the loss of control the main hand sword brings. The greatsword DPS is much closer in DPS to the shortbow than the main hand sword so if you want to play ranger and aren’t willing to play with the sword, bows don’t look bad compared to the only other melee option. If your unhappy with ranged DPS and game design often enforcing a melee meta due to easier fights, look to the devs who made ranged DPS weaker and boss encounters dramatically different if your entire party melees.
Maybe this thread will change the perception of rangers in groups (note it seems to be aimed at speed clear groups and not general players). Maybe it will change how rangers play (although, as I mentioned above, the build isn’t really new and the skill cap on the sword is very high for it’s auto attack to get the same results a warrior gets without the high skill cap).
I’m curious, are you aiming to convince people to bring rangers on speed runs or just let them into pugs? The former seems like a small community decision uninfluenced by the meta and the latter is already happening (usually not with this build).

I’m simply trying to demonstrate that they aren’t some abysmal class with no DPS like a lot of people seem to think. I’m sure there are a lot of people that would never expect to see the Destroyer killed in 16 seconds with a Ranger in the group. Don’t get me wrong, I never thought a Ranger was capable of this until I actually started doing tests of my own.

The issue is that more bad players play rangers due to the thought of it being the class to stay in the back and safely doing dps with a bow, people’s favorite ranged weapon.

My only problem with you saying that destroyer is rubbish easy is that through all of my coe runs with LOD never once did they clear it in 1 try without timewarp. So the ability for your members to predict the ease of encounters or the possible usefulness of some classes is rather funny to me.
What run have you been on? Ive always cleared it at least in a timewarp, even when the guard kittened up an aegis and we all got kd and ele died we still killed it in one go… you must have had some real kitten runs or something ._.
For every Longbow and Brown Bear Ranger, there is at least one PVT Shout Heal Warrior.
I disagree and am prepared to fight you to the death about it.
And for every shout heal warrior are 10 full zerker wannabe pro warriors.
