Ruby or Scholar
What about boon duration runes? Sure, it depends on your build, but on something like Elementalist with Sigil of Battle, it can effectively give you extra stacks might (3 in case of Battle example) which adds to your Power and Condition Damage (105 to each in example). Add to the the extra Fury/Protection/Regen/etc and I think it could actually compete with Rubies and Scholar.
I calculated it just on the armor stats, nothing else.

with LH eles blasting firefields in their auto chain, permanent 25 stacks of might and constant fury is possible, so boon duration rune…. doesn’t do much

Even if you are wearing armor pieces/trinkets/weapons/traits without any of these stats (i hope such do not exist…), you’d still have at least level 60 base stats.

Then I guess my next question:
Are ruby orbs ever worth using?
if you cant afford scholars
Phantasm mesmers (which I am) would benefit from ruby. The 10% damage (afaik) does not apply to phantasms.
Refer to my post above.
Thanks for pointing that out. I skimmed through and didn’t see anything.
I guess since I have two conflicting sources, I’ll have to test it out for myself.
I tested it last night with swordsman. There was no difference in damage (sPvP on heavy golem) when wearing 5 scholar runes vs 6 scholar runes at full health.
To me, that means it’s broken for phantasms (at least).
Try outside of spvp perhaps?
NemesisMMNecro [rT] – Trans-Transsylvanian RPer EU
I recall some guy reporting a weird bug with his phantasms retaining golemancer rune summon when he already changed his runes.
This might be connected.
Try outside of spvp perhaps?
Why?
I don’t want to buy 6 of these expensive runes just to find out they don’t work.

I summoned the phantasm with and without, as you have to be out of combat to switch.

Most likely intended. Clones and phantasms don’t benefit from any of your other +damage traits or gear.

This is a completely invalid argument for saying scholar>ruby.
A rune of 166 power would be better than a rune with 165 power and 10000000000000000000% critdmg then, whereas in reality… well, you know.

I didn’t make an argument when I posted those. I calculated Effective Power from just the items looked at and provided the stat totals for them. People can take those and apply them to whatever they want, and I’ll probably calculate the difference between each of those with my Warrior.
Youtube Channel – http://www.youtube.com/t3llularman
It is hard to item analysis like this sometimes, since different classes have different builds and trait lines. But in general, the comparison between orbs and scholar runes is basically this:
When is 4% greater crit chance and 4% greater crit damage more than 45 power + 10% of everything when over 90%?
I’ll try and answer that with a “generic” build (full berserker, +300 power, + 300 Precision, + 30% crit damage)
Ruby Orbs: 4320 effective power
Scholar runes: 4208 effective power
The difference is 112 power. The scholar bonus is 421 power. So, scholar is better if you meet the requirement 27% of the time. Note, this isn’t factoring in stuff like sigils, might, or additional bonuses.
I tried some phantasm damage tests with and without scholar armor for a long time. I summoned some phantasms on the dummies in LA, changed one piece of berserker/scholar armor to to another set to remove the 6th rune set piece, checked damage: The low/high/average damage was 10% lower! Then i put it back on after about 10 minutes of watching numbers and put it back on. Damage went up by ~10% again. The same phantasms have been used for the entire duration and i tried summoning with and without scholar as well. It seems to work for rune bonuses, but the mantra +4 %X(n) bonus and the +3 %X(n)phantasm still don’t work.
I haven’t ran any tests on actual mobs/enemies/players yet, but i can say it definitely works on the dummies in LA.
I tested it last night with swordsman. There was no difference in damage (sPvP on heavy golem) when wearing 5 scholar runes vs 6 scholar runes at full health.
To me, that means it’s broken for phantasms (at least).
So I decided to test this on enemies. I choose Magecrusher. By drawing the aggro of Magecrusher and surrounding risen hand and subsequently hiding on the cliff, I was able to keep my swordman phantasm and my hp at full.
I did 4 runs of 50hits – 2 runs with 6th scholar effect and 2 runs without. Basically I just used a separate crafted glove with the same stats but empty upgrade slot. To get a more consistent result, I calculated the critical and non-critical hits separately. From my short test I found that there was no significant difference between the 2 equipment config.

Please remember another significant factor, apart from pure power and player skill issues: Runes of the Scholar are also FAR more expensive. Not everyone has hundreds of gold to spend on sets of gear.
they’re actually a lot cheaper now (full set ~12g), so anyone who isn’t a pauper should be able to afford them.
Not everyone is as rich as we are, kind dungeon runners… 12g is still a lot. Also, people have alts.
Scholar Runes are MUCH cheaper nowadays.
Moreover, if 12g seems much to you:
-pick 6x Bolt of Gossamer. You’ll get the scraps (need 12x) by salvaging stuff. 4s at piece.
-pick 6x T6 Totems. 18s at piece. Can drop from mobs and boxes.
-pick 6x Charged Lodestones or 12x Charged Cores trough CoE or champ boxes.
-slap all in discovery tab on a lvl 400 tailor
-???
-profit.
If you’re build would improve by using Scholar, there isn’t even the price excuse anymore.
Most used: Guard/Mes/War/Nec/Ele.
Yes, i use 5 chars at time. Because REASONS.
12g is so much. About 1/3 of what anyone can earn in am hour of mindless play.
The cost excuse could fly if this was several months ago before the dungeon rewards were implemented. Now, that’s one casual day of dungeon runs, even if you’re broke to start with. No excuse.
Scholar rune prices are still manageable since they can be crafted. If they aren’t craftable, they will probably be more expensive than Divinity runes.

Scholar + Sigil of Night are best combination for dark dungs.
Tekkit’s Workshop
What is the definition of a dark dungeon?
Better yet could you just list it? /:
AC
TA
SE
COF
COE
In those DG is always “night”, which means you’ll get the 10% dmg buff from Sigil o the Night.
In
CM
HotW
Arah
Is instead daytime, thus the sigil is useless.
That’s the main reason to distinguish the 2.
Most used: Guard/Mes/War/Nec/Ele.
Yes, i use 5 chars at time. Because REASONS.
I can see the other 4 but TA night?
Alright I guess it is time to invest in more sigils then.
Thanks.

Most dungeons is always Night , then they will get 10% damage boost from night sigil.
CM,HOTW,ARAH is always Day rest trigger night sigil. Fotm is random.
TA isn’t night and SE has day parts.
Wasn’t 100% sure about TA tbh, it’s been ages since last time i’ve done that DG.
But i really need to check it out, TA daytime sounds strange to me
Edit
Beated me to it.

Wtf, my AC weapons didn’t glow back when i was still playing charr.
And i mean what i said, some parts of SE are daytime. There’s also snow landscape and water ~5000 distance under the ground. Dredge technology ftw.

When do I ever have to activate heal signet?
Just kidding; but I decided I like it on 6. When I’m playing properly, my fingers are on WQSE for movement, so the 6 key is closer than if I were to use WASD.
One day I’ll rebind A and D from turn keys, but the appeal of hitting auto run and then just using one hand is too great (for being casual in towns/open world).

I’m sort of glad this was resurrected because I’ve been really curious about Ranger runes. I see Dub toting them as being a really good option, but I’ve never seen any real reason why besides “PARTY MEMBERS ARE SLAVES” stuff (which is totally awesome lol). Ignoring using them on a Ranger where your pet dead or alive counts, what triggers the #6 bonus on the Ranger rune? Does it always apply like some people are suggesting, or do only minions / glyph summons trigger it? When above 90% HP Scholar is obviously superior, I’m just curious about the merits of the Ranger rune in other cases.
Also, in the case of using it on a Ranger where you always get the #6 bonus, how much do you have to be above 90% in a fight for Scholar to retain superiority for overall damage?
About 40-100% i guess, depending on traits etc. Sometimes ranger runes are just straight away better than scholar, even when assuming 100% uptime. And ranger runes simply always grant the bonus.
That’s great to know. Thanks for the information.
