Resident Thief
(edited by Auesis.7301)
I really only made this thread so I could vent, but I genuinely am interested to know if there have been times where your dungeon runs have also gone horribly wrong, due to anything. Could be your teammates, could be connection issues, bugs, whatever.
My contribution:
I created a party with one of my friends for CoE, and decided we’d pug the other 3. This usually goes well, since CoE is pretty routine to those who run it. We got a third player, and he said he hadn’t done it before, and naturally, we told him not to worry, we’ll just explain to him as we go through (the mechanics aren’t that special). A 4th and 5th join together (one invites the other), so they must have been friends from elsewhere (I’m not going to drop any names here).
We chose path 1 after the escort, with about 50 minutes until the token reset. Our DPS had just proven to be extremely high and our playstyles had a decent synergy, so we go through the first half extremely confidently and efficiently. We nailed every stage up to the golem with the 4 turrets surrounding him, and we get to the point where the console run with the bomb golems is waiting at the top of the staircase. The 3rd player has already pointed out that he is new, so we stop to quickly explain what’s going to happen, what to do etc. However, the 4th and 5th do NOT wait. Instead, they sprint right in, so I’m forced to type tiny strings of text as I struggle to keep up with what’s going on in-game at the same time. Both of these players do not even attempt to guard me, and instead proceed to murder infinitely spawning bomb golems (they have claimed that they’ve done this before, many times). I immediately ask what in the name of Balthazar they’re doing, and the 4th’s response is simply “YOU’RE A THIEF, STEALTH IT.” It takes me a few knockdowns and ragdolls from explosions to point out that bomb golems can pretty much detect you in stealth at the console, and will plant themselves down to blow me up anyway, so I need support. Even if I turned out to be wrong, there are so many golems that I needed someone to guard me anyway. He responds with a “NO THEY DON’T, IDIOT, GO STEALTH CONSOLE.” So, I plant a Refuge, hack away and get blown up, exactly as I predicted. I managed to get one hack in before the player left in a panic when he realised he was wrong (he didn’t even try and come to my aid during it either, the newbie and my friend stayed there and backed me up). The 5th player starts complaining that our strategy (our?) is terrible. I point out that this wasn’t even a strategy at all, and that the pair had ruined our approach to the objective, since I hadn’t even begun to explain or discuss with the team what to do before they rushed ahead. Sighing, my friend and I just tell the others to kill the big golems that have spawned, so we can keep going and maybe grab another player later. He then starts crying, saying “THEY SPAWN FOREVER YOU IDIOT OMG”. I’m almost at breaking point here, since it is obvious to anyone who has run this path even once that the big golems do not respawn at all. I point this out passive-aggressively, and he calls us idiots once more and goes to leave. We kick him before he gets the satisfaction, apologise to the newcomer and add him to our friend lists so we can run it with him another time.
We abandoned the run with 5 minutes to go before the reset.
I hate pugs.

SE Fire Golem. ‘Nuff said. Some stupid engineer said he was tanking it and it was because of him that we we’re alive even though he would last only for about one minute. We had a perfectly good guardian who can “tank” but he thought he was the best in group. Because he was a terrible “tank” anyways he left blaming everyone else.
A funny story of my experience in a pug group. We were doing path 1 of COF and we were at the part right after the acolyte where you have to put 3 flames in some bowl. My friend mesmer that came with me decided to make it easier on the pugs and put a portal. 2 pugs (I think they were friend? I’m not sure) took the portal without taking the flames. It gave me a good laugh.
Twilight Arbor – fwd/fwd
My wife and I were the ones to start the group, we pugged the rest. One of them, a warrior, rage quit about 2/3 the way through after getting himself killed over and over again.
After downing Leurent, we went to face the Nightmare Tree (this version spawns the oak hearts) of course, the other two pugs were downed at about 95%, not being able to res them, I told them to rally by hitting the binding roots at their feet… They did not. instead of raising a defeated player I told them to “just res and run back”
This shouldn’t have been a problem considering we cleared everything on the path… Meanwhile my wife (a mesmer) and myself (a ranger) continued to kite around the 3 veteran oak hearts and whittle away at the boss’s hp.
A minute passes… Two minutes… 5 minutes… Nearing 10 minutes… I manage to type up “WHERE ARE YOU?”
…
“the blossoms are killing us.”
…
I was livid. These people couldn’t hit a stationary object and simply run by them. My wife and I managed to finish the boss without them, facing down a massive downed penalty but still managing to hold onto it in time for her to get to work.
It was the most irritating experience ive ever had. They were blocked shortly after.
AC Path 2
I’m a tanky warrior. Only other melee is a guardian with a scepter/shield/greatsword. The group appears to be relatively nooby. I have no problem educating in the hopes of bettering the player base in the long run.
But on this particular night……….
Me: “Can someone help me kite the mobs? You can do it with one but for the sake of time I don’t wanna chance having to do this over again. lol. Guardian, you up for it?”
Guardian: “Sure.”
Me: “You have a mace by any chance? It’ll help keep you alive moreso than the scepter while we move about.”
Guardian: “Nope.”
Me: “Meh. No big. Just stay on your toes and if you think things are getting hairy, pop Shield of Absorption but don’t get trigger happy with it. You have any stun breaks in your skill set? Sometimes a scav manages to get ya.”
Guardian: “Ummm, what are stun breaks?”
10 minute explanation of stun breaks
Me: “Alright everyone. Be patient with the traps. Wait till a mob is right under them. They won’t take damage running into spikes that went up before they got there. Lets do this.”
Event starts. Guardian immediately dies. Traps go up too early. I go down
Me: “Nbd, lets go again. You all got a feel for the timing now?”
Guardian excuses himself politely to see what his mom wants
Ranger: “Do ghastly weapons only come in level 80?”
Me: “Yes. I’m actually wearing the shield now. I wanted the skin.”
Ranger: “The skin?”
Me: “The look.”
-_-
Ranger: “But you’re not level 80…..”
5 minute explanation of transmutation stones and how to get them
Ranger: “So do they glow at night?”
It’s currently nighttime both server and local
Me: “Do you see the skull?”
Ranger: “Oh, that’s cool.”
Me: “Yes. Yes it is.” Laughs
Guardian returns
Guardian: “Lets hurry up. I”m sleepy."
-_______-
Me: “Alright. Everyone ready?”
Event starts. Guardian immediately dies again. Traps go up too early. I go down
Guardian: “Sorry guys but I don’t really need this right now and I’m sleepy so i’ll see ya.”
I put a vote in to kick the guardian. He is kicked.
Me: “Dude was terrible anyway. And you guys are activating the traps too early. You’ll get it. We just need to find another now.”
Notices Ranger has begun using map chat to look for another group member. He is still in the dungeon
Me: “Um…hey bro.”
Ranger: “Oh, sorry. Forgot haha.”
Ranger proceeds to use /S
Me: “……………”
Thief that was silent up to this point: “So what comes after this part?”
I leave the group
Ranger is outside typing in /S
Ranger: “Anybody know why that guy left our group?”

Not a disaster but the greatest save I had ever done.
So a PuG of mine was doing AC explorable.
They all stood stupidly in front of the Howling king as he screams, not paying attention at the Howling King. All four of them dead, clustered next to each other and the Breeder they were trying to kill.
I dropped a Banner, all four of them rallied.
CoF 3. People get so angry at part 1. There is a 5 second time frame where 5 players need to light torches at the same time BUT we all need to cast the “light torch” option within 1-2 seconds of the first person to light all of the torches at the same time. Whilst at the same time if we get into combat the “light torch” casting will be disrupted.
There was this one instance where 1 player with the easiest torch who didn’t even need to kill anything was completely going ballistic on us. Since he was only standing there and everyone else had to kill all the “spawning mobs” at the same time he had the honor to call “Go” to light the torches. Problem here was, every other 4 players understood that we would first say “Ready” when all the mobs have spawned, and the 5th angry player should say “Go” to kill the mobs at the same time. Once we had our mobs killed we would say “R” and once everyone cleared their mobs, the angry player was supposed to say “Go light” so we would all sync nicely.
BUT
After 30minutes, we all realized that the angry player was our reason to fail. He kept on lighting everytime he said “Go” and we told him. He went all crazy and spoke some foreign dialect and rage quit. We just got a random Pug in after the drama, and finished the first part within 5 minutes.
Lesson of the day. Kick all rude inpatient players at the start who aren’t greatful that his own party is actually doing all the hard work, and letting him sit on some rock and do the easy part. Call “Go”.
TA up path.
Had to deal with a “uber MLG Call of Duty player” who was all leet. Kept smack talking people who had trouble running. Never had to rez a guy so much in my entire time in that dungeon. Was even better when this “MLG” player told me not to melee the spider boss (the first one with breath/AE) because melees would all die to it.
Another one was a guy who was going to “afk kill boss” during the 2nd boss on F/Up path – he got hit with bees and just stood there (not attacking btw). Then downed. Me and my brother run and rez him. He stands. Goes down. I say in group "Is “X” player there?" and wait awhile. He comes back and comments that he was AFK killing the boss to which I respond “You got downed twice already….”
Then he said “ohh yeah the bee’s”.
