I just came back after a long break and was wondering if I should even bother leveling up my thief to use in dungeons? I have a lot of fun with him but I’ve heard horror stories of how bad thiefs are in dungeons.

I have an 80 Mesmer and Guardian, would it be better if I just used those?

1. Do you have a team that can stack might and fury?
2. Can you actually stack might and fury?
3. Are you good at meleeing? Most of the time full meleeing?
4. Are you good at surviving with a dps character that in zerk is made of paper?
5. Are you good at managing resources (initiative)?
6. Are you willing to stop using terrible weapons (pistol /cough) and do a melee dps rotation?
If so, go ahead. The dps is huge. If you can’t melee and rotate skill and survive, though, you’ll be useless. Especially if none in your team stacks might or fury; your dps needs to be partially carried.
Honestly I’d just practice with your other characters.

Thief is pretty handy to get your whole party through some of the harder Arah trash runs.

Thief’s not all bad if played correctly. You can stack might on fire fields quickly, keep normal mobs perma blind with off-hand pistol #5, interrupt those annoying dawgs with off-hand pistol #4, skip useless parts with group stealth, and KITTENING SHADOW STEP EVERYWHERE!!!(<<Main reason for me to play thief in dungeons, it’s loads of fun) while doing tons of damage.
But like deSade said, they’re like paper and will go down 2x faster than warriors if you take dmg head-on.

I’ve played with lots of thieves in dungeons and they do just fine. The whole “warrior or guardian or gtfo” attitude has to stop. If you enjoy the class, by all means level it and have fun! Thieves bring a lot to the table.

Most of the actual good players stopped preaching that long ago. PUGs still need another 4 months or so to catch up.

It’s almost impossible to convince pugs to run decent build, much less respect things like combo fields. Warriors groups will always be the best ones to get in pugs to be honest for the simple reason that even the most idiotic pug can activate For Great Justice and the most idiotic mesmer can use Signet of Inspiration. While I’ve been in decent, not overly great, but decent groups that just couldn’t bring even 1% of the greatness of a LH ele because of the whole combo field mess and nobody paying enough attention to field order.

But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t do non-warrior pugs (in fact I hardly play my warrior at all these days.). Just arguing that when it comes to pug, you can’t really beat the smoothness of a war group.

It’s boring and stale though, and I have no interest in doing these anymore.

Yep, drop a fire field….and crickets.

I live for fire fields, and I’m usually on a stupid ranger :p

@ OP … just do what every other Thief is doing right now and Farm WvW.
You literally can’t lose, that’s how bad Anet is at handling stealth balance.

(You can also find a niche in running Arah paths where Stealth > everything else)

Basics to being a good thief in dungeons:
1. use a sword when you are facing multiple targets
2. use daggers on bosses, learn to use backstab and HS properly
3. don’t every 2 second like the typical thief pug
4. use group stealth at the right spot (that means don’t use shadow refuge to heal -_- )
5. when you are downed, if you see someone coming to res you, don’t blink away from them

those with a decent dps build will make you extremely valuable to your group

is dps of PW good again after they shortened the delay between the stun and the hits? I ask because before that change PW’s dps was actually lower than sword auto-attacks since the animations were stupidly lengthy
