Soloing lupi with engi (without wall)?
I dont see why it wouldnt be.
Of course it is, you can find an almost solo (downed due to a lag in rapidfire) on youtube.com/sylarscreed. I did that somewhen around january 2013 in rare magic find equipment, though, so don’t expect anything breathtaking. Has also been within my first half hour of playing engineer.
Game over, yo.
I tried it long ago and, while phase 1 and 2 were quite easy, couldn’t finish phase 3.
The problem back then was pretty much about every lupicus move requiring a double dodge. Gear Shield on toolkit worked really well but, unfortunately, it was also the main defense against a possible cage attack (outside a 60 second elixir S), so the fight was extremely reliant either on RNG or knowing how to prevent Lupicus from using that move (which is something I never learnt).
The fight should be a lot easier right now.
The “new” rocket boots should be enough to handle almost every big AoE move and, assuming rifle isn’t necessary for geting back into melee in time (which I haven’t tested), the reworked Static Shield should be incredibly helpful too.
The no RNG based stability on elixir B and the reflect on turret drop through traits are another options that could help on that last phase, albeit they probably a bit too slow to be realiable.

Its possible, its not easy though. I haven’t done a 100% solo, but I have solo’d the individual phases (phase 1 while a friend and I were just messing around in Arah, and the other 2 phases when PUGs wipe). Any way, here are the details of my current build:
Weapon: Rifle – jump shot gets you back into melee range fast in phase 3, and rifle 3 and 5 will take care of any grubs if you fail a dodge in phase 1. alternately, you can take pistol/shield if you can get back to melee range fast enough. don’t use dual pistol.
Traits: Firearms 2 – Hair Trigger – ensures rifle 5 is off cooldown by time he leaps again. put these points elsewhere if you are opting for pistol/shield
Inventions 6 – Fortified Turrets is the only necessary trait for this build – you can sort of learn the timing to place these (there is some RNG). be ready to dodge or block though, whether because you placed them too late, or one of his attacks got through and destroyed the turret. For the other 2 traits chooses whatever you want. I use power shoes (one of my favorite traits) and energized armor because i run celestial gear (if you’re running zerker, its probably best to chooses another trait)
Tools 6 – Static Discharge for extra damage. Power Wrench to put the toolkit block and prybar on shorter cooldowns. Andrenal Implant – increases your endurance recharge rate by 50% constantly.
Skills: healing turret and rifle turret provide the reflects for this build (and short cd toolbelt skills for static discharge). Toolkit – mostly because the block is necessary, but this is my main means of damage against Lupi as well. Rocket Boots – just in case he uses the dome, this can get you out. Switch to another turret or bomb kit if you think you can prevent the dome 100%. Supply Crate for your elite for some more reflects ( use in phase 2 for maximum effect).
For phase one, just keep smacking him with the wrench and use your toolbelt skills for static discharge when he summons locusts (bomb kit can take of them by itself if you opt to use that instead of rocket boots). If you get grubbed, back off and burst it down with rifle 3 + 5 and prybar. For the final grub (at phase change), back up just a little and drop a turret to protect you in case he uses the mass AOE.
For phase 2, try to time you turret drops to get the shield up just in time. if you’re too slow, use toolkit block. don’t forget to make use of static discharge – keep those toolbelt skills on cooldown.
Phase 3 is a little tougher. Try to learn when he is likely to use rapid fire on you and drop a turret accordingly (for me that is immediately after I leap back to him after his health steal). make the decision to pick up the turret for shorter cooldown or blow it up for static discharge. How you handle the rest of phase 3 should be largely based on your personal playstyle. I use the toolkit block for the targeted health steal and double dodge out of the AOE one. You may opt to do it the other way around (also depends on the current state of your endurance and cooldowns).

So you use rifle turret , tool kit and rocket boots and don’t use grenade kit?
Does that mean you will be camping rifle for most of the fight?

No, camp toolkit (or bombkit if you choose to use it). Grenades are only useful if you trait for them, and only because of vuln. Without traiting grenades, pretty much anything is better.

Loving Eric the casual quaggin in the background.
I don’t want to sound like i am undermining your achievement bcuz that is probably the first video i seen an engineer solo lupi off wall but i feel like RNGesus favored you in phase 3. There were many times where lupi could of domed you or could rapid fire and then life drain and then rapid fire when you are completeing defenseless but he doesn’t
He doesnt dome if you understand how to avoid that attack (hint its nothing to do with the wall). He rapid fired plenty of times. Few times dub almost downed, but healing turret op.
i know how to make him not dome but in the video it looks like you were late back to him everytime after he lifts into the air, there were also times where u dodge out of his spray but arrived late it seems.
Don’t take my word for it though, its just that it feels like i got domed many times when i am like 0.5 second late back to him.
Obviously wasnt late enough.
Anyway you asked if it was possible. Dub posted proof. Thats all there is to it. You can even take energy sigils if you are still strugging. But you certainly dont need them with engi’s blocks. You should also have permanent swiftness so theres no reason to be late back to him. :P

I’ve actually been pretty unlucky that kill, as I took quite a lot of random rapidfire and p2 aoe transition hits, additionally he has been quite active for most part. Also, this was my first attempt and it was with battle sigil, going with energy will take care of any eventual endurance lack. And last, but not least, there was just one point where he could have bubbled me, although it was very unlikely to happen. Tldr: nothing strange about the kill, just a bit unlucky.
