Stumped on a class
Thief 80 | Elementalist 80 | Mesmer 80 | Necromancer 80 | Revenant TBA
I adore dungeons on my elementalist. Certainly not boring AND I like the aesthetics of the class. It’s also super useful in dungeons. I struggle with my mesmer though but that might be my experience with it is limited. Guardian I liked more when I learned how fabulous sword focus is. Warrior I dislike. But I still run her in cof for old times sake.
And all who stood by and did nothing, who are they to criticize the sacrifices of others?
Our blood has bought their lives.
Id recommend ele, mesmer or engi based on what you want. Engi can be a little complex but its a good pug class. Ele would be your best choice but its somewhat challenging to stay alive on. Mesmer is very easy to survive with, simple to get the hang of, difficult to master but can be very weak in a lot of situations.
I’d stay away from Ele/mes if you’re looking for a not-so-complex class. Ele has 20 skills per weapon set to learn, while mes requires almost constant retraiting and I usually end up swapping utilities around every encounter/skip/etc, so it can be a bit of work.
I’d recommend starting with guard. Not as boring as warrior since you have some handy defensive utilities (namely Wall of Reflection and the 50,000 sources of party-wide Aegis). As for aesthetics…grab some dyes and nice skins. My guard doesn’t have a bit of blue on him Utilities on guard are super easy — SYG (or save yourselves)/WoR/Retreat (or purging flames)/Renewed Focus will get you through most anything.
When all is said, my mes is by far the most fun for me in dungeons, but it takes a lot of practice to play one skillfully, and she’s super glassy.
Lolwut.
>Boring because it’s blue.
Zerk guardian is pretty squishy if you don’t actively use skills to mitigate damage – Aegis, Protection, Focus 5, Blind and I say requires some attention than just the occasional dodge a warrior needs to do.
I say Mesmer is also a good middle ground as they’re less complex than Ele button pressing but also needs a bit of awareness to use it effectively. For example, time and time again I’ve seen phantasms cast on Subject Alpha and pushing him out before FGS can do its thing. It’s stuff like that that bugs me about pug mesmers and certainly would need at least some awareness/knowledge to use it effectively.
Mesmer, while far from optimal or even good, is very loved by pugs stuck in the 4 wars 1 reflect bot(guard/mes) meta. It’s extremely easy to play and highly tanky via active mitigation. You get invulnerability(almost) on around 9s cd. That’s insanely OP.
Elementalist. You’ll die a lot. Even if you’re super skilled, when situations get bad by wrong aggro or lack of reflects..you’ll be the first to die. You can survive more on d/f but that’s not cool to run in groups.
Engi is fun and great for pugs but you will get the ocasional “lol we 4 wars we can cap vuln on bosses” guys.
Warrior heroes are just the worst! If you can’t beat them, join them.
If you want to use a thief in dungeons, use d/d. It’s a lot more fun to play than s/p and does a lot more damage to your target. There’s a lot for the thief to do but it seems you’re already shutting it out.
Ele is fun and has a lot of options too but 90% of the time you’ll lure the boss/mobs into a corner and use 3-4 to instant melt them all with fgs.
I agree with you on war and guard. They are very useful though.
I have an 80 mesmer but that doesn’t mean I know about it to comment on it for you.

I disagree. As a general rule, you want to use D/D against single and S/P for multiple targets. However, D/D is only good against single targets that allow you to hit them and immobilize > cripple.
Situations where S/P is better against single targets: Shoggroth (control), Phase 2 Archdiviner (instant AA with no tell, heartseeker has an aftercast delay, control), Mai Trin (PW outlasts her autoattack chain + condition removal on skill 2 + defiance ripoff), scale 50 Molten Berserker (PW helps against his hard hitting autoattack + evade for multiple waves).
Then you might want to use D/P sometimes, like in TA against the vines (blind/interrupt) or at Jade Maw tentacles. You will also find yourself using D/P against bosses that you will not hit from behind (due to either positioning or a conjured weapon) and where you are expected to lay down a smoke field asap after it dies (if you have to supplement your group’s blasts with SB). Hell, I can even think of situations where your SB would deal more damage than S/P (very limited, though).
