Ranged is only good in a handful of fights.

Yup, and full PVT armor doesn’t make a difference so for once you got a boss that can be killed nearly (I say nearly because there are still traits that zerker will pick that people who go bunker usually won’t) as fast as a zerker group can do for a group of bunky pugs, because you can’t do crit damage on this boss, and PVT has Power has its main.
Since we went without armor we lost a lot of (plus)Power (and lost the initial (plus)damage from runes of the scholar) so achieving times close to our naked run is perfectly possible and fine for a full group of PVT bunkers. Which was the point of the video, to show that this boss is not some terrifying demon, I can understand groups that have zero reflect having trouble with it but there’s been complaints against this boss even from parties that had 2+ guardians etc..
What people needs to be reminded of though, is their weapon choice. Most weapons in this game kind of fit 3 archetypes, which I’ll enumerate for a warrior : dps that scales with +Power well (greatsword, axe), condition (sword), utility (mace, hammer, shield, warhorn). Whether you’re a zerker or a bunker, if you want to kill this boss efficiently and before getting overwhelmed by spiders, you need decent weapon types that scale with +Power. Obviously a warrior with mace main hand wouldn’t really be much better than a war with a longbow (maybe even worse?). I’ve seen ton of pugs do bad damage not just because of their gear but because they went with weapon types that, quite honestly, are not very compatible with efficient PVE. Mace main hand, be it on a guardian or warrior, is trash for PVE, for example.
Taking this boss down doesn’t take much, but it does take a group that is aware of the strengths and weakness of the weapons used. Just going into melee is not a guaranteed win if the group is using the wrong stuff.
Do avoid gear that doesn’t feature any Power, like rabid, which is Precision Toughness Cond damage. Whether people want to admit it or not, (pure) condition damage is terrible in PVE. You can get away with rampager but most people who tend to build upon conditions tend to go the bunkier route rather than the rampager route.

Nice job, Nikaido. This kind of stuff makes me respect you guys. Rock on dude
Mace main hand, be it on a guardian or warrior, is trash for PVE, for example.
Just to further illustrate why PUGs can no longer do this boss, there was a guardian in map chat the other day (DB), who said he uses Mace/Shield with Staff as swap, and when I told him that Mace will have trash damage output, he said
“Well this Guardian build isn’t meant to do damage.”

I mean… At least he’s using appropriate weapon(s) for what he’s wanting to achieve. I feel like there’s far too much hostility towards people who don’t build towards maximum dps efficiency. Like, sure. Go ahead and troll someone who says they’re running full sentinels armour while they claim they do more damage than a zerker. But I don’t really think people should belittle others for running a class how they wish to do it if they aren’t pretending that their build is the best/pro.

The problem is those players dont realise their builds actually make content harder than if they go atleast semi dps spec.

Except that you don’t really need the “maximum dps efficiency” this game can do to do this boss quickly, which has became of the the nastiest boss for a group of “let’s be as random as possible” pugs.
A knight wearing guardian with altruistic healing trait is already bordering on overpowered in terms of how many hits it can take. And it would do enough damage on this boss.
We’re not talking about “best” or “pro” (we did this video with no armor to show that you don’t need max stats) level here, we’re talking about common sense, about using the right stuff in the right context.
If you go to extra length to kitten yourself with absolutely terrible weapons like mace in PVE you deserve to go through some pains if you’re not willing to adapt a little bit.
Let’s say a player isn’t all that experienced in dungeon, AH + hammer should be plenty enough (with sword/focus on swap) as far as survivability in melee goes. The healing from AH is the most overpowered thing you can get in PVE. It lets you nearly facetank the ettin autoattacks in fotm 48. Asking for more bunkiness is pushing it.
Going mace is basically making a statement about how you’re not going to put the slightest thought or effort into it. And mitigating damage through perma protection does more for a group than a couple heals from mace, plus the fact that hammer actually has decent autoattack dps with its symbol chain.

It wasn’t really particular to this path, I just replied to that guy because it looked like a relevant post to say such a thing. In fact it really had nothing to do with your run/post at all. Sorry if it interpreted like that. Was kind of a pseudo rant based on other posts from around the forum.
The only time I use mace on my guardian is as a backup absorption weapon with offhand focus. Mostly couple it with either GS or sword mainhand for DPS.

What I’m saying is that almost a year into the game, the vast majority of players are still trying to play this game as if party roles should be completely segregated and they’re leeching from dps-oriented players on their team as a result. People want to spec fully into the control/support role and ignore damage because that’s how it’s been done in other game where you can’t just avoid damage with dodges or key utilities on the DPS classes.

This. 1,000,000 times this. THIS.
You guys give people the truth about PVE in this game. For some reason, for some people, its a hard truth to accept, and in a lot of these dungeon forum threads you get kitten on because of it. And its people who contribute nothing to the community knowledge base in terms of builds, videos and general strategies and advise.
Such elitist kittens, sharing all that information with people.

Stop using it.

No. I’ll have my fractal mace skin
Sad I missed that… looked fun :p. Just goes to show that the dungeon isn’t actually hard

“But I’m a water ele! That’s where I put my traits!”

>.> If they were LHammer that would be completely different from the staff/water “imma pure healer” mentality, but it also doesn’t cover things like refusing to swap attunes when skipping trash and limiting their own ability to escape.
There are some people out there that would amaze you in their ability to level to 80 by sitting in earth so they can stack bleeds cuz they’re a condi ele or wear full PTV and do nothing but spam fireball.
Probably transplants from GW1, where eles specialized in attunements.

Those are both amusing and annoying to see in runs. Especially when they try to justify it.
not bad, not bad.. It’s only possible if you enter straight after cut scene and dps the hell out of that tree, if you wipe you will have to pull out different tactic, and not a naked guy

A guildmate once was saying that Lupicus should take 10-15 minutes with a good team and when I pointed out the (at the time) minute-plus record kill from DnT, the response was:
“Well yeah, if all you do is damage.”
I wish I kept a catalogue of all the idiotic thing GW2 players have said.

That would be a pretty massive catalogue.
‘Pffft I sit in fire attunement, fire is the best damage, no need to swap attune. Auto attacks are op. And for even more dps I run rune of the pirate because the tropical bird pops out and hits things too. Ya’all got nothin on me.’

I was told how to play by two rifle warriors yesterday. :/

of course but is it always going as planned? still possible to do it after screw up tho, but it’s hell of a battle

So the first step to playing is to submit a petition to have bleed removed from your autoattack so it’ll get a direct damage buff and scale better?
Trinkets on, but no armor ( level of defense on a zerker build/trait : zero ) and less damage obviously without runes of the scholar and zerker armor on.
/bow
Welp, I have been told.
Still not sure I like the boss’ design, but it’s good to see a perfectly clear and achievable way to beat it.

I hate that this is true. I know that personally, I got this idea into my head (That control / support / damage roles would all be required in some significant amount) before the game was released, in a now absent blog post about combat.
It’s pretty obvious, and nobody’s impressed.

PvE’ing with a rifle is being drawn in by a ranged eviscerate but having nothing to do with that and volley on cd :P
What the…. I just did this path with my guildies, spiders spawn in large group instantly……. there is no way to kill that tree
I’m sorry if I missed this in the thread, but can anyone explain why going naked for this boss is beneficial?

Oh, he just made fun of people like me who claimed it’s impossible to beat the boss in whatever way.
Or look from another angle, if someone can beat the boss w/o armor, it’s very possible to beat the boss w/ full armor. A boost in confidence, so they said.
