Guild Wars 2

Hey guys. I finally finished leveling my ranger. She was the first character I made, but I hated the class.
I’m looking to bring her into dungeons, so I need a build. I have berserkers and assassins gear so far, but trait wise and skill wise I’m at a loss. I was hoping for some advice, both gameplay wise and theory wise.

I plan on using sword / war horn but I don’t have a clue what the second weapon set should be. Halp?!

Most of the time I have dagger offhand as the second weapon set, and other times I have a bow when I’m a lazy kitten.

Axe offhand or torch offhand work nicely aswell. I know desade always carries his rodgort with him for a nice fire field.

1. Build – I like the 30 25 0 15 because of flexibility – more below
2. Sword autoattack
- you won’t be able to max melee range and
- stand behind wor and
- ress easily because the aa doesn’t really interrupt and
- pick up environmental weapons <— you have to spam f and curse repeatedly in your mother language for it to work.
How to interrupt your aa: SWAP WEAPON, sword 2 or 3, dagger 4, lightning reflexes, force of will. For the timing you need to learn and practice.
Greatsword only if you’re a noob kitten unless terribly needed
Same for dagger, I’m personally far from impressed by it and I rarely need the dodge in normal dungeons. Run torch for the fire field if you have eles or for might stacking prefight, run axe for the rest because it has the highest base dps.
The build is flexible because you can trait your sigils and make your ranger one of the easiest class to skip with. Don’t forget to swap traits before skipping.
Bear + signets of your choice (stab+dmg absorption) + protect me + RaO
1 deadeye shot= 1 third or your bear’s life. I’ve said enough.
Tips
Use the elite summoning spirit before short fights. If you don’t need to use the active, you’ll be able to swap it right after the fight and put in another elite with no cost or punishment. The spirit will keep healing your team, it ca be nice to have (see: spider queen). if you need to use the active it can still be fine: if it recharges and you go ooc before the spirit dies, you can still change to another elite.
The greatsword skill 4 works like the warrior’s sword block. 100% the same. Nuff said.
Lupi aoe.. yeah.
The ranger works like a little warrior, it’s just less braindead to play.
Don’t place your frost spirit randomly.
CONTROL YOUR BLASTED PET. If you’re ooc, it won’t be targeted/attack; if it’s on guard, it will attack the enemy and you’ll have to call it back; NEVER FORGET YOU CAN MAKE IT COME TO YOU AND STOP ATTACKING ANYTIME, don’t you ever dare to come on the forum and claim they’re broken, they’re not. Wait for your pet to be completely still – not moving – so it’ll do the p2 without being interrupted. It’s sloppy but I have a 100% ratio on completed f2 using this.
You can use your pet to aggro everything safely. I like the 1cat + 1drake combo, you can use 2 cats if you want.
Take care of them, always. If they die too much, bar some difficult situations, it’s your fault.
I’ll say it again, when you’re in combat they’ll take aggro so be ready to call them back or move them anyway.
Don’t use sick em with their f2, the f2 will cancel the shout effect. Use it after f2
Your pet attakcs your target. Put it on passive when
- doing the ghost eater event, while you’re aggroing oozes else your pet will attack and aggro both oozes and boss
- husk in coe p2, also golems will have a chance of aggroing on your pet if you mess up
- other situations I can’t think of right now because I’m so kittening kitten ed off.
Make your stupid pet behave in general, if they misbehave it’s your fault.
Ok I’m not even remotely kittening done but I’m tired, if you ahve more questions you can ask me ingame… but I’m sure you can ask superpros leet mad skillz or whatever, they’ll give a better answer than poor old nub here.
Now I can kittening go to bed and spend the entire night fuming. kitten.
PS I prefer rune of the ranger + bloodlust – if you’r eobsessed by the difference with scholar do your math, I can’t be bothered. Can burn in hell for what I care. Fine? Fine.

Actually probably the best ranger advice ive ever seen posted and if i ever bother with a ranger I already knew I would be asking him about it if i needed to.

20 in marksmanship for spotter. It’s just way too good to not use. Also 20 in wilderness survival nets you offhand mastery, which is amazing for not only the reduced cooldowns but the increased range of the skills and the reflect on offhand axe.

My ranger’s build is just like that old Brazil’s ranger build, but after they moved the spirit’s trait to adept category i started running 15 points in beastmastery, so i have 20% lower pet swap cooldown and a trait that gives might on pet swap.

I think that having 15 points in beastmastery is very helpful, my cats are not dying so easily now.

I tend to run 20/25/0/15/10 with pet f2 CD reduction in the BM tree.

Jaguar and depending on the group i use either jungle stalker for 5 stacks of might or red moa for good fury uptime.

Sword/warhorn and depending on the encounter either an axe or a dagger on swap.

Quite straightfoward. You build for damage. So all damage modifiers, crtidmg and might for your pet (you should aim for at least perma 15-25 stacks of might on it ), and the 70% change of triggering on frost spirit.
Frost spirit has no icd, so it’s broken coupled with a fgs. The 70% chance guarantees a remarkable damage boost. Fortifying bond is a must.
Other traits, eh… You could go 20 marksmanship and 25 nature magic but I can’t think of any other decent trait combination. I tried but I think that for now his combo is the best one. kitten theorycrafters.
Unfortunately, there’s not much trait flexibility, unlike guardian. I never swap my traits but the last one in marksmanship.
Sword skills do share the cooldown, even if you swap. If they’re on cd, they stay on cd. Same for every profession.
You should aim for this mini “rotation”: 4 5 warhorn or 5 first if you’re using it to blast a field (yes it’s a blast), swap to axe, check if you need the 5 or the vulnerability, if not, autoattack. Oh, 4 does quite a nice damage and is a decent pull skill.
Anything else?
