The reason I like dungeons and not fractals
I share this exact same feeling.
I kittening hate fractals in the state they are now, and I really hope the changes implemented in HoT will change that.
That doesn’t change the fact that its sad they nerf dungeon rewards tho, since they will always stay my favorite instanced PvE content, and the reason I still play this game after many hours
With the changes coming in HoT, there will only be one fractal shard per difficulty, so you can pick which ones you like to run and which ones not. For the most part, at least.

Oh nice. Do you have a link to that? I missed wherever that was posted. So you just do 1 fractal per run? And reroll till you get the one you want, or can you actually pick it?

There is no rolling with the new system was in an Anet article released last month I believe.
Yeah I too believe the revamps will make Fractals more fun and less drama.
The current setup has evolved into an all drama fest so it is good to see that it gets fixed now.

I have no idea how to make it a clickable link!
Also check https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/dungeons/Loss-of-Dungeons-Facts-on-FOTM/first#post5603782 out for a summary of the changes to fotm. It’s becoming a lot more accessible than most people think, I think.
oh good thing theyre taking the rng out of rolling fractals so you dont have to prefer dungeons over fractals, so convenient with those gold nerfs inc.

No each level have a specific fractal and instability. So you may have to do the fractal you don’t want the first time to level up, or you can just wait a couple of days and then ask for people with higher level to do the fractal you prefer to level up. But once you a high level, you can choose whatever fractal you want to do.
Here’s another problem I have with dungeons instead of fractals:
Yesterday I was teaching a RL friend who came back into the game some instanced content. I can easily take him into any dungeon and know exactly what path I’m doing, as well as having no AR or gear requirements. Can’t say the same for fractals as I’m limited to low level ones and also don’t know what fractals im getting other than swamp. I could bring him into a high level one and 4 man it, but that obviously wouldn’t be very fun for either of us.
At least if I can avoid Colossus (it’s not very hard but tedious and the mechanics are boring) and Mai Trin aswell as better rewards (4g at lvl50), then it’s all good, but as it is now, no thanks…

hell I am ok with Cof path 1 farming It reminds me of gw1 cof days and other dungeons.
that said fractals has been the worst dungeon experience I have ever had in a game.
I have more of the problem with the complete rng of it both in rewards and fractals you get while its understandable its still pretty bad.
with TBA raids we’ll armor basically
with fractals we’ll be force to do this for our dungeon experience and I don’t want that.
this is probably the first time I’ve seen a mmo go like ok dungeons throw them away now, with ffxiv there is a lot of reasons to go back and do older dungeons glamour armor/weapons/and classes relic weapon as well as a decent way to gain exp besides fates and questing.
for me its more they are trying to force people to get hot then ok ease them into hot no either you get hot or your left behind and a big middle finger to players like me who for most part log in do a few dungeons log off,

Why are you telling me that? My point is that Fractals and Raids have a high barrier to entry for new and returning players to the game. Fractals have gear requirement (and raids too, to an extent) and Raids are obviously not meant for new players and have full ascended gear as a recommendation. Dungeons filled that void of 5 man content for players that cannot commit to a raid team or do not have the gear for fractals. I can’t bring my casual friends into progression raiding or lvl 50+ fractals.

Absolutely.
Dungeons are your intro to group play, from there you get better and enter the more intricate dungeons (arah/aether), and then from there fractals are within your grasp to start and as you get into the game and get geared higher level fractals. All culminating in the highest challenge, Raids.

Your post sounded like your friend wasn’t used to fractals. I was hinting at, that you could teach your friend the swamp fractal just like it was a normal dungeon. You could help them scale up to reach your level and both of you could learn fractals overtime. Fractals low level scales are perfect for beginners and have more forgiving learning curve just like dungeons.

Dungeons are hardly a prerequisite for fractals. New players will go directly to fractals because everyone will tell them dungeons aren’t worth the reward.
So a big chunk of the endgame will be lost (let’s not fool ourselves into thinking Anet will replace that dungeon content with new fractals and raids).
In the end players will get bored more quickly and thus move on to other games more quickly.

Exactly, Dungeons will get skipped in favor of low level fractals that are far more complicated (unblockable attacks, undodgeable attacks, jumping and all sorts of shenanigans). So people will now skip dungeons because people won’t be doing them and move on to a more complicated system and simply learn the game slower or not at all.

Still the only way to get tokens for skins and legendary gifts (barring pvp, which supplies skins but is TERRIBLE for tokens).
The people impacted by this change are those that farm dungeons for gold.
The reason people prefer dungeons is that it’s a bite-sized mindless farm. Fractals take a lot more reaction, SW is more lucrative in the longrun but takes more of a time commitment.
People running for tokens (as the original intent one might add) will not be terribly impacted just the gold farmers.

Unless lfg dries up, because the gold farmers and people who are after the dungeoneer reward have moved elsewhere.
The main concern with rewards shifting to raids and fractals is the reward lock outs. With fractals its down from 5 tiers to 3 each day after HoT releases. And raids is once a week. So it would have to be pretty substantial rewards to make it fair. And then we are stuck with nothing to do unless we feel like doing content that doesnt reward us for the rest of the day/week.
Did we see more on fractal rewards? I thought we were getting a set of dailies with 2 tiers (1-50, and 50+) with rewards for those similar to current fractal dailies. Also we’ll get a change to what we get from the fractal completion chest (new randomized bag thingies). So I’m not really sure what to expect there but it sure as hell better be more than 3 easy dailies.
@ Windsagio, I’m one who does dungeons for fun when I log in, I rarely run the lower ones but sometimes I’m feeling like blowing up some Inquest stuff and will run an SE1/3, or doing COE and HoTW, whatever i find fun at the time. One of my favorite things to do is casual runs through Arah (you know those “path X” messages and tht’s it in LFG) and ideally teach some people stuff and have fun. I like that I’m at least rewarded with some gold for going through what sometimes ends up being a 45 minute arah path. I fear that once that’s gone my money will dry up as honestly I just play whatever I find fun. I don’t find running in circles opening chests in SW fun. I don’t flip the TP too much work, I get enough of that at…work. I’m worried that playing this game for fun the way I have been will lead to me being broke eventually. That’s a valid concern to me.

1-20, 21-50, 51-100 were the numbers i remember
ideally fractals will be that thing you like so much about your casual runs. the daily will be some random levels, and youll be able to quickly toss out an lfg and prolly get the same kind of experience as you would from doing those dungeon paths. plus theyll offer earnable BiS gear, which dungeons do not. dungeons require you to buy your BiS gear, more or less.

@Jerus, well I don’t want to be mean, but you’re not exactly a standard case (meant in the most awesome way possible).
People, by and large, that are still doing dungeons like them for the high reward to low investment returns. Anything else stinks of self-deception (or perhaps just deception).
They like the rewards they’re mad the rewards are going away. It’s just like when they nerfed the champ trains.
And the Chanp trains are a good comparison point, same reason for the nerf, liekly similar end result.

That comes down to the difference between fractals and dungeons in general. Fractals require a bit more organization, or should I say more situations where someone doing dumb things can ruin it for the rest of the group. Simply put, dungeons are more relaxed content. I simply can’t run open world stuff without falling asleep, it’s too relaxed for me. Dungeons while easy keep me engaged enough to be entertaining. Fractals are a step up, they make me actually try a bit(some a lot). Raids will complete the the scale IMO by making me really try all the time (I hope?).
I feel like if they take dungeons out they’d be removing a nice middle ground that I find enjoyable at times. I’ll probably still run Arah now and then just for fun even without rewards, but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t be disappointed that I’d be “wasting” my time from a monetary standpoint.
Like I said in another thread, if they were looking at nerfing things across the board to adjust the economy I’d be all for it. But the idea of taking one of the areas I find relaxing and fun out of balance in that sense is disappointing.

I am teaching him the low level fractals? Running 10s and 20s isn’t very fun or rewarding to me, but I do it cause hes a buddy of mine. There’s pretty much no way for him to catch up to me at this point since I’ll be levelling up fractals inbetween HoT launch and raid release.

I’d agree, and why I keep repeating if they also nerf SW I’d be pretty ok with it. I don’t want to have to go do braindead play when I run out of money to build my bank back up.

Well specifically, BREAK CHEST TRAINS.

Not saying they are, but you have no idea. It’s not uncommon to hold some things back.

It’s pretty clear they have no plan to regularly add new fractals. Hence the “revamp” which is just a rearrangement of current fractals.
They can’t even get their one big centerpiece – the raid – out in time for HoT. Anet’s simply are not capable of bringing out more fractal content in the near future (or even medium future) — even if they wanted to .. which I have doubts about.

Delaying raids a few weeks happens in other MMOs as well to allow players to not feel like they have to rush through the xpac content to get ready for raids. If they were ready at release then all the serious raiders and world first racers would have to grind to max level (or in this case, grind out masteries) ASAP. Off the top of my head, Heavensward and Warlords of Draenor did it recently.
Or we can just be cynical and say it’s not ready lol, that works too I guess.
One of the best things about going into a set of fractals was the randomness. You never knew which ones you would get. (Except of course the swamp, because nobody likes dolphins.)

Only the first wing will be released around HoT. The rest “sometime in 2016.” So yes, they’re not ready.
THE CONSPIRACY IS REAL!
Yeah, they’re not ready and they’re nerfing dungeons so that’d people will buy HoT.

just going to point out here, when dungeons started they were the best source for direct gold. back then you had no champion bags etc.
Some devs even specifically said they want dungeons to be where you go for gold.
they altered it to focus on once per day, but they were already best gold before that.
Now of course they have changed their paradigm, but yea, dungeons were supposed to be golded up.
