I’ve just recently had an argument with a person in a dungeon about that i’m not willing to stack and i want to fight the way it was meant to be. He kept on going about it how stacking is superior than simply fighting and that i’m stupid because i don’t stack and i will die later on when i face tougher enemies.

What is your opinion on this matter? To stack or not to stack?

Stacking is not an unintended tactic. There’s nowhere that you can find proof that Arenanet intended you to ONLY fight a mob out in the open. Making use of a mob’s line of sight is a very very very common tactic used on basically every mmorpg ever.

If you choose to fight away from your group and not share boons and not cleave enemy mobs, basically all you are saying is “I don’t want to deal damage and want to have as little success as possible so please keep your boons away from me.”

Stacking makes killing mobs faster, it makes groups of mobs group together so they can be cleaved or AoEd, also a lot of buffs have small radii, therefore players have to stack to maximize damage. Usually the mobs are pulled against a wall so if there’s an ele, he can drop FGS and boom, mobs die- this tactic can be used for bosses too. Overall stacking makes killing mobs faster, and usually easier because they all die together.

Little Zoe I am assuming you mean LoS Stacking things around a corner or corner stacking a bunch of things into a corner to kill it quickly.

You can clear content effectively and efficiently without LoS stacking.

Its general use is for people who either lack the patience or the capability to tackle content head on effectively.

Stacking and LoSing are two separate things – stacking is something you should almost always do (if you are interested in clearing a dungeon efficiently) – LoSing is something entirely dependent on the situation – sometimes it’s completely pointless, other times it’s worth doing.

I find it strange you think you know how ANet intended a dungeon to be performed though, because you dislike something (stacking) does not mean it’s not intended.

Dark Souls is Online. Regardless of the medium, I believe the goal is to find gain in strength and dexterity as a person. I personally believe this is a healthy attitude in life let alone video games.

As true as your second bullet is, I personally think it’s important to promote growth in this direction. He is in the wrong of course for getting into the argument to begin with that much is true. The best I can say for the topic is to find people that think like alike to help accelerate one’s ability to reach the desired goals.

Believe it or not, Power Gamers exist in this game, they also were the ones that could;

- take the entire last room of the ascalon fractal on level 50 with little to no resistance
- take the dredge clown car + boss on dredge 50 on top of each other to speed the entire encounter up as doing it the safe way just makes things take an unnecessary amount of time, a foreign concept to the stack meta but very familiar and easily achievable by the latter
- mesmer portal the arm seals on cliffside, a tactic best used when the party is infront of the seal crushing everything without safely corner stacking the encounter, allowing the encounter to be completed within mere minutes, with little difficulty

If players fight close together they get
- good sharing of group boons and missile defense (intended)
- good proximity for heals, revives, and cures (intended)
- good use of fields and finishers (intended)
- grouping of enemies for aoe attacks and condition fields (intended)
- sharing of summoned weapons and banners (intended)

That’s all fine. The worse game elements all come from stacking in corners.
- better defense from ranged enemies than through use of skills
- better control of enemy location than is possible through crowd control skills
- awful camera control and visibility
- bad graphics performance and visibility

A lot of the more recent dungeons do not have corners. The chambers in the Nightmare Tower were utterly grey and dull but they did prevent stacking in corners. Until the game mechanics change you are really just going to annoy a lot of your fellow players by objecting to valid and effective tactics such as stacking (or skipping).

I’m not even sure what you guys are going on about.

All i was talking about is stacking makes killing bosses easier (and look dumber doing so, all players being stuck in a corner on top of eachother).

As for the other arguments about “why would you stay far from your team, not wanting boons”, i’m not even sure why is that brought up, as i never said anything like that. It has no benefit to stay further from eachother while killing a boss, but at the same time there is a difference between staying near eachother during the fight, or standing on top of eachother in a small corner with the boss stuck in there. That’s dumb. This is my point.

I don’t care that it makes it easier to kill the boss, it looks dumb and for me it makes it feel less rewarding to kill that boss. That’s all what i’m saying and so i will never play in groups that tend to do this “stuck in a corner stacking” thing.

If he’s trying to pride himself on his skill, he should start solo-ing dungeons. There isn’t any skilled pride in 5 man clears at this point in time. Unless he is planning on setting a new speed record with some new/original tactics, I think the OP is talking out his kitten here.

There are countless threads about not stacking and not LOSing. It’s simple. Don’t do them if you don’t want to. Keep in mind that not everyone will agree with you. Also keep in mind that you will be a poor team player by intentionally not stacking.

If your argument is that LOS/Stack is ez-mode, you’re right (to an extent). With a good team, it really is ez-mode. So perhaps it is time for you to start solo-ing instead. My guess here is that the OP isn’t ready for that either though. Perhaps i’m wrong but it just sounds like another gripe by yet another person who wants to pew-pew instead of contribute to the team.

In most MMOs, there’s a lot of mechanics to counter it though. I mean, even pre-expansion WoW had stuff like iirc, C’thun’s bouncing eye beams that did 1.5x damage after each bounce and had infinite target cap (or was C’thun in TBC, can’t remember anymore).

It’s especially a weird occurence in GW2. The combat system is built on one of mobility and active movement, it just seems unlikely that ArenaNet then went ‘yeah. lets make fights where you don’t move at all’, especially when it turns into not only not moving, but there being no skill in it whatsoever and everyone just facerolling.

@Xae, well, they’re in a tough spot. It has been explained over and over, but I will cover it quickly again.

Stacking in corners to LOS is often done when it isn’t needed. The main offenders are PuGs but the idea comes from watching successful speed clears and trying to imitate. It isn’t that you’re immune when stacked in a corner, like some players may think.

It’s that players now know enough to bring a certain team comp to trivialize most content. Even a mediocre party knows to spam blinds and reflects on mobs to keep them useless.

It’s a tough place for Anet to be. The only way forward is an AI buff. They keep trying to nerf the actual skills, which is a huge mistake. The problem is the enemies that willfully stay in black powder or that willfully keep using projectiles on WoR. Making reflects not work on random enemies isn’t the answer. Making enemies with perma-stability isn’t the answer.

It’s more than that really. If you look at CoF P1’s boss for example, no matter how great you make it’s AI, it’d still be a complete faceroll. The vanilla dungeons had a lot of mechanics that can just be brute-forced or fights which basically had no mechanics whatsoever.

Whoever made the earlier dungeons just screwed way too much up. Stacking itself isn’t that much of a problem, people stack on Lupi, people stack on Molten Berserker, they’re well-made, challenging fights.

Just like you can’t make a tank n spank hard in a trinity MMO, you can’t make a fight with no difficult mechanics hard in an action-MMO.

It depends on your group. Lupi and Berserker are not really challenging fights with a full party. I think they were until they were picked apart and figured out. That’s just the progression of any game though.

There are parties that genuinely struggle on the CoF P1 boss. No joke. Not saying he’s the toughest boss in the game, but he can put people down. It’s just that good parties know all of his tells by now and how to counter everything he does. So, yeah, he’s lolmode.

Thieves have only two off hand weapons and they can throw one of them away if AI mobs don’t stand in black powder, really! Combo finishers might as well not be there once enemies are not in the fields. There are also going to be other problems with players using aoe fields just to make enemies run around until they die. It isn’t a simple fix to mend the AI.

Immobilize, cripple, knockdown. You should need to make enemies stay in fields, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Heck, it’d actually make cripple and immob more useful in PvE, which is brilliant.

If enemies get trolled like that, then you could make the AI better. Add in conditions in the code like only moving from certain AoEs.

You’ve clearly never played a thief since the offhand pistol field is so small it’s there’s no point spending 0.5 seconds on a utility skill to cripple an enemy just to give extra 0.5 seconds moving away (even if we forget that weapon sets should be functionally complete without utilities). Thieves are also clearly not going to use tripwire traps to knockdown enemies just so they are blinded while knocked down!

This is just one example that the PVE game doesn’t just change slightly when mobs run out of fields, it completely unbalances the design of many skills.

Heh. You could take Devourer Venom or Caltrops, or just Ice Drake Venom. You don’t even need to give up 6/6/0/0/2.
Or if you’re gonna go /ruined forever, Go x/D and for a mere 2 points in Shadow Arts, you can get the little gem of a trait known as Cloaked in Shadow.
If you really look at thief, you’ll find they have a lot of means to make sure they enemy won’t run and just as many ways of blinding. Thieves have a lot more of offer than being simple smugglers and thugs and even it becomes harder to be effective, it’s not like Thieves are in any danger of completely dropping out of the meta.

To stack or not to stack? That is the question. Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer the vet and elites of outrageous AI, or to take traits in arms against a sea of mobs, and by DPSing, end them. To die to res no more. And by a res we say end the combat and the armor damage that our character is heir to. ’Tis a consumation devoutly to be wished. To die, to res, perchance to be rezzed: Ay, there the rub, for in that downed state what RNG may come when we have shuffled through this dungeon path, must give us pause. Theres the respect that makes diminishing returns of so long farms. For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, the griefers wrong, the troll commanders inability, the pangs of DC, the devs delay, the insolence of pugs, and the impatient whining the unworthy takes. When he himself might his legendary make, with a bare greatsword? Who would bloodstone dust bear, to farm and grind under a wear life, but that the dread of something after the patch, the undiscovered jumping puzzle, from whose leaps no adventurer returns, frustrates the will and makes us rather take those mesmer ports, then to fly to walkthrough videos we know not of? Thus the fractals make cowards of us all and thus the native resolution is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of the zerg, and enterprises of great risk and movement. With this regard their guildies turned away and lose the name of awesome.

Thank you.

I rather have an organized, non-stacking around a corner battle.

However, the way Guild Wars 2 combat mechanics work, be them AoE Cleaving or even the average range of boons and the likes, all call for Stacking.
And it goes hand-to-hand with the average PuG’er which most likely has the patience of a potato and values speed over amusement. So it all kinda works.

Terribly amusing spending hours upon hours watching 1 mob decimate 4 guys.
Im not even sure how if its really possible for a cut-throat to insta-down 2 warriors and spike the necro/mesmer.

I know I had fun. You should have heard me cackling on mumble. Atleast, I was cackling until the 40 min mark hit. Judging by the expletives they were hurling my way I dont know if they were as merry as I was though.

I would like to hypothesize that people who want these extremely long death filled dungeons must be unemployed. I have about 4-5 hours of play time everyday. That would equal a full tour of AC and a smattering of CM. Normally its 1-2hour of GW2 which is full tour of AC/CM/lolling around a bit (because I like suffering), 2 hours of bf4, 1-2hours of “omg such kitten teams. #$ has a 40s cd. #3 won’t hit every target unless they’re in a line.

The point is, it would be incredibly annoying to have to constantly chase enemies just because the AA has a light field on it. You’ll also lose a ton of symbol ticks from not being stationary. Like someone else said above, you shouldn’t need to bring extra utility skills just to make your weapon set work for 5-10 seconds.

Yeah, you might need to use #3 #5 more than once a day.

That assumes a number of things. Think about how the AI would behave. Should it flee from all AoE all of the time? No. How will it hit anyone? 5 people can maintain permament AoEs, and in many cases, 1 person can. A mob that permament flees a party would be worse than we have now. I’m not even advocating for an AI that flees AoEs. It was just an observation.

An AI that occasionally flees AoEs (on a kind of threshold and a kind of cooldown, probably) would need to be a small part of a much deeper AI overhaul, if it should be a part of it at all.

Thank you.

I don’t really see a problem with that. No one complains about players having the ability to move in PvP.

To me, if enemies ran away when I throw my fields at them, all it means is that I need to learn to adapt an counter that.

I just adapt to the situation as necessary. Sometimes stacking will work well, and other times the PUG stacks and then wipes to a boss for some reason. If it’s obvious that, for whatever reason, stacking is not going to work, then I propose we just spread out and range/melee the boss as we prefer. Most of the time ranging works just as well; it just takes a bit longer.

I get los’ing and I get stacking to a point, but to tell me the game was meant to be played by luring a mob into a corner so that each of us can stand on exactly the same spot and be able to dodge roll into the wall so our position on the stack does not change is more then immersion breaking, it reaks of exploiting. – Its one thing to have a player with a ranged weapon to leave the group and pull a mob to a more strategic position, and to have the players maintain a certain distance from one another to benefit from buffs, but it is another thing entirely to have every person on the map do the whole run occupying the exact same coordinates for every pull and to look at the screen and not get the sense that you and 4 other people were there, and not some crazy mess of something with 10 arms and legs, swinging 5 weapons, to say nothing about the camera positioning disabling any visual indication you might have that you were engaged in a battle with something.

Last time I was in a dungeon we were using this tactic in a hallway, and there was no way to position the camera so I could see what was happening. This went on for the whole run, and all I could see for the majority of the time between running away from everything that wasnt absolutely necessary to complete the dungeon was the camera spazzing out clipping through textures. It didnt even look like a video game. It wasnt fun at all, and I refuse to believe this method of play was intended, but I can accept that the design has created this evolution of gameplay.

Don’t join groups that have a LFG like exp zerk rush speed etc. I hate stacking and I hate the meta and yet I am about as elitist as it gets. I kick PUG eles for running d/d instead of something more viable even though they might be using the right gear. Why? I’m not running standard dungeons for fun but for money. Everything in gw2 is money gated so people are looking for efficient ways to clear stuff. They would still do this if money wouldn’t play such a big role so in the end it all comes down to the atrocious AI and dungeon design. Blame ANET, blame yourself for joining the wrong LFG but don’t kittening blame the players.

People used to bring every weapon and switch them to be optimal (you can do it while running).

Issue today is that the bad AI, led many players to memorize a video and failing anything not going exactly as planned.

They don t know how other profession works but they feel free to judge, they use internet builds everywhere with the same exact setup in every single fight of every single dungeon and they feel “elitist” despite even the vids themselves suggests to make changes.

They are impermeable to any tactic they didn’t seen on youtube and such, even if its better for the situation.

Unfortunately these players are not elitists nor skilled.
They are either lazy or just they just use the pug excuse to find experienced players to carry them, and then feel the party was good.

Extremely common even in fractal where a wave of new players are failing the easiest stuff because they are too stubborn to do different stuff from youtube videos..
And if they die a lot, its other faults obviously even if they are the only guardians or stuff like that.

If you are good, one or two bad pugs won t slow your run by much.
Way less than the time needed to find another (except rare cases).

Stacking is a legit tactic.
Knowing it is fine and useful…knowing only that is just lack of experience.

GW2 balance:
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.
