Are there any thoughts on how this could be run? After seeing the pvp one… I feel like we should show Anet how one could be handled (ie, we run one ourself). Maybe something combined with gwscr or something?
Looking for ideas and some brainstorming.
DnT invitational info:
Death and Taxes [DnT] is proud to announce The Death and Taxes Invitational, the first competitive PvE tournament. Eight teams of five will compete for the fastest, smoothest dungeon runs in a competitive environment on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at a time convenient for both NA and EU players.
First prize will be 500 Gold to the winning team and additional prize support will be announced moving forward.
The Format
The teams will be paired up before each round for a best of three path contest, and one randomly selected team will have the right to pick which path is run first. Their opponents will pick which path is run second. If a third path is required, Death and Taxes [DnT] will pick a dungeon path. The two teams will begin their dungeon runs simultaneously at an appointed server time, which the runs broadcast live on Twitch.tv. At least one member of each team must be able to live stream the run in order to participate.
The dungeon runs themselves will be regulated and timed according to the http://gwscr.com restricted rule set.
In addition to the Guild Wars Speed Clear Rules, a defeated player may not resurrect at a waypoint, and may not be resurrected by his teammates. Should a player be defeated, the remaining 4 must complete the dungeon. Should the last member of the team be defeated, or point in the dungeon be reached that cannot be completed with the remaining members of a team (i.e. only two members alive for Shaggoth in Arah Path 1 or the Brazier puzzle in Citadel of Flame Path 1) that will be considered a “Wipe.”
As long as the team that is still alive is able to finish the path without wiping, the finishing team will be given the win regardless of time. Should both teams wipe, the game will be considered a draw and will move onto the next path. If both teams wipe in the third path of the match, the team furthest into the dungeon will be considered the winner.
The Teams
Teams will register with 5 members and one optional alternate. The registration will list the account name of each player and the profession that player will be playing. Players must run the same profession they register with throughout the entire course of the tournament. The alternate player can fill in for any player on the team and may play any desired profession.
This will promote a risk reward proposition between an “all around” team composition that can tackle all paths of every dungeon and one designed to sacrifice utility for additional offense. The alternate will allow creative teams to tweak their team compositions to their advantage.
Registration
The tournament will be by invitation only, however we are soliciting for interested guilds or teams. Guilds may fill multiple teams if they have sufficient members. Any interested guilds or teams may register in the registration thread on the Death and Taxes forum. http://dtguilds.com/forum
The 8 invited teams will be announced on June 21, 2014.
Members of Death and Taxes will be excluded from participation in this tournament.
Questions or Help
Should you have any questions regarding any aspect of the tournament, please post them in the official tournament thread on the Death and Taxes forum.
If you would like to donate prize support (gems, gold, precursors, legendaries) please contact me in game, my IGN is ‘Nike’.

NoobParty – One “Legend” gets 4 noobs and has to carry them through. The one with the least deaths wins. There should be a timegate obviously and the noobs or newbs have to stay with the legend.
Speed runs of Story Modes done at the suggested level. Level 30s doing AC, 40 or whatever TA is, etc.
I don’t really see any good way of doing competitive PVE other than speed runs, but that little twist would be entertaining to watch.
It would also limit practice as you’d only get one, maybe 2 shots at it before you leveled up
Hm. I was thinking along the lines of a full dungeon tour. Or half of one, 1 path per dungeon and it would have to be a speed race. But we would have to disallow fgs and anything else that gives an unfair advantage to a particular class. I think most people would find it difficult to have character slots for the story modes. I dunno.
They should examine the dungeon meta and ban some certain tactics for the sake of competitiveness. I mean, if they allow FGS spikes, that’s all you’re going to see.
They probably shouldn’t rate it on speed alone and it may be wise to actually only allow a pools of select builds.
All just things to take the players out of their comfort zone.
If they made it about speed, and allowed everything, I’d suspect they’re trying to see what state the dungeon meta is in with the aim of rebalancing it, by way of class or dungeon adjustments.
How about a full dungeon tour, 1 path per dungeon, but only the “harder” paths that no one likes to run. (I.E. TA Aetherblade, HoTW 2, SE 2, etc.) as well as lvl 50 fractals. No fgs/ice bow, no consumable buffs, no armor repairs. (I would say no beserker gear, but that would mean that many people would have to buy a whole new set of gear so maybe not.) Fastest time AND fewest deaths in party.
edit: Also no skipping mobs/bosses.
(edited by pdavis.8031)
I don’t see how not skipping mobs and not using consumables is meant to make it any more interesting, that literally just adds tedium.
I’m a bit skeptical about the restrictions as a lot of arguments could be made for a lot of different abilities trivializing different content.
Reflects for example. Pulls/knockbacks being another tool that can really make things easy. Stealth is another. And I see mention of FGS/Icebow but don’t forget Norn Elites.
I hate FGS as much as anyone, but I can’t help but feel that banning that opens up the discussion for other banned abilities and what not.
Also, if it were a full tour, wouild you be counting the time between paths? Potty breaks on a timer?
Speed clears for individual common paths without warriors, thieves and eles. Restricted ruleset. Dungeon tour would take too long imo.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot, actually.
I don’t necessarily think that doing a speed run is the appropriate approach. Why, you may ask? Because it pits a very, very small group of players against themselves… and frankly, it’s something that those guilds do themselves already. You, naturally, want the challenge to be competitive so that it is at some measure a show of skill, but you want to be inclusive of a greater number of participants.
Another issue is the way you ‘prove’ it. Whatever you ask people to do, they have to prove that it was done somehow. Well, there isn’t a dedicated stream for this sort of thing, and there isn’t any spectator mode for PvE so an observing ‘shoutcaster’-like entity can’t watch your run and record it for you. Asking players to record things automatically cuts out a huge number of participants because you need a beast of a machine to simultaneously record a run and play with good FPS. This level of overhead also discourages participation because it’s more stuff they have to figure out beyond GW2 things. The optimal competition asks the competitors to do nothing beyond simply play the game.
Lastly, the biggest challenge is how do you drum up excitement for this? Spectator mode and big-time streams are great for getting views and getting some good GW2 visibility. How could we do that with dungeons? Note that the most important thing isn’t that it be streamed, it’s that it be streamed in a centralized location.
So these are some challenges to think about. Rewards are tough, but at least feasible. Award a legendary to the winning team. Maybe we can even coordinate with ANet to get those rewards provided if we can build a solid enough competition (this was how the ToL rewards were initiated).
(Message exceeded 5000 characters so see my second post below)
I’ve been thinking about this a lot, so here are my precursor thoughts:
Beyond that, I suggest a more hardcore style challenge. Let’s get normal timed speed clears out of our minds here, consider the following:
I think this would be cool because it means everyone does the same thing, but it forces everyone to think differently than they’re used to. It also encourages tankier builds because while berserker is faster, it isn’t the safest and doesn’t allow for messups. Keep in mind, though, that if both teams play effectively and win with everyone alive, the fastest team wins! In this regard, it isn’t good to be slow and steady unless you can keep the whole team alive because you may still lose. This dynamic encourages mixed strategies and would hopefully create some interesting plays. I also think having only four players changes things up a bit and adds that extra layer of difficulty that some people crave.
Thoughts?

I do really like it, but a few questions.
What if the “spectator” guy screws something up? Agroes something early, falls behind, whatever?
And, how do you really prove any of the skill changes and what not? I could easily swap traits around and no one would ever know.
And you mention having to do Kohler, what about Cave Troll, that’s random locations and sometimes not even something that spawns, how do you deal with that?
There will be no speedrun record. Two competing teams will have to stream live. Both starts at the same time. Who finishes the path first will win. There will be an Announcer/Referee present at both team’s voice comm.
The preliminary round requires competing in 3 short paths drawn from a pool of dungeons like SE/TA/CM/COF. The semi-final round tests your endurance in 2 medium-long paths (COE, Arah, HotW) back to back. The final round will be one epic long path (preferably Arah p4).
The team comp is not allowed to change during the competing round and no more than one man of a single profession. No substitute player during the fight. FGS rush is allowed. Stealth or portal skip is allowed. Full wipe means ‘Defeated’ in that match – You can still revived down/dead teammates, just have to avoid a full wipe.
No gemstore products nor utility consumables nor jumping puzzle.

I think RNG related events would be skippable. So the troll would not have to be killed if it spawned in AC. Fortunately there aren’t many RNG-related events, so this shouldn’t be a big thing.
As for verifying the load-out, well, there really is no way to prove it. Perhaps we should allow everything there because bad enforcement is no good.
Ideally, the spectator would be someone trustworthy from the community who you could trust to do things right (I’m thinking [DnT] streamers, [rT] streamers, [SC] streamers, so forth). They would have to stay far enough behind. The only sticky situation is that for bosses they have to die to the boss first and let it reset, so in some cases if they’re slow they may lower the time. I could see judges adjusting the times of the run based on that though, to balance it out.

I’d recommend they play Thieves in high stealth builds. Soldier’s gear may be ideal as well.
Forcing a team composition would be interesting, but while not in specific classes it would be in specific roles and builds.
E.g. 1 tank, 1 healer, 1 condition damage build and only 2 direct damage builds.
Sort of bringing the classic MMORPG flavor to GW2 for the length of the tournament.
As far as the competition I suppose we could change it up as well, as speedclearing is everyday stuff for some of us and breaking away from the routine could be fun.
I’ve seen some ‘non skipping’ suggestions and to enforce that I guess we could make use of the god forsaken aetherpath.
None will beat rT in Aetherpath. There will be no challenge.

LOL Thats awesome!
Of course, being a brainstorming session (in essence) I’m just throwing out ideas. Several of the ideas presented are certainly more thought out and more detailed, but that doesn’t make mine terribad :P
Some time ago, when Sandy and I were brainstorming for the ascension project we came up with a cool idea that could fit your concept:
Have two guilds join into competition where they would both enter a dungeon at the same time with a team of their choice. Have both teams stream the whole process, use some clever streaming technology to “split screen” the event. Once both team are in the dungeon (restriced rules) and ready, a timer starts and a third party organiser announces a surprise restriction/challenge. Both teams get a set amount of time to think about how to overcome this constraint, after which they may start completing the dungeon. The first team to finish wins.
The idea is to promote both skillful play but also on-the-spot creativity (finding ways around the surprise challenge) while entertaining the community.
I’m pretty sure we could set this up! I think people from SC would be very happy to compete with my fellow rT guildmates, and needless to say this would be a tough competition The only issue is with the streaming technology. I have some friends that could help with that though, so things may go very smoothly.
I guess we should have qualifiers too though. So we could have 3 rT teams, 2 DnT, an SC, another dungeon guild team, and an underdog team (like team RP) and have them do it as a match. It would be fun !

In the long term that would indeed be the goal, but we may have to size down our fantasies if we ever want to achieve anything Let’s start with a “test” run comprising 2 teams and then we’ll see how much attention this attracts.
Now what would go into organizing this? If it’s in our hands, what can feasibly be offered as prizes? We obviously can’t offer legendaries. Or precursors. But I know I would donate little minis and gem shop things similar to how anet does it. But I don’t know how to make it into something big that I’m not controlling (my fashion challenges don’t really attract the kind of crowd this kind of thing deserves). Any ideas on that?

Of course a test is required. But I’m talking about if it succeeds. It would be nice to attract anet and have them actually pay some sort of attention.
Let’s start with an Invitational tournament, with two volunteering teams. The winning team will be forever known as the Favorite Champions of the Dungeon Sub-forum Tournaments and will be able to skip the prelim. round of the future Tournaments.
If this Invitational Tournament is a roaring success, we can start pooling donation to hold the official one
^^ I like it. How do we decide which dungeon?
Chop the head of a chicken on a board with squares each square a dungeon name, wherever it stops, Voila.
Not only is it real RNG, it’s probably even more interesting to watch than a dungeon based tournament, now i’m not saying Tpvp is fun to watch, but then again im just a cynical kitten.

random thoughts….
The idea of a Tournament would be so very fun and cool. The exact method of enacting it might be a little tricky… However. with what i have seen now vs when i noticed this thread earlier today….
Idea.
Dungeon Madness!!!! (think march madness for NCAA basketball)
Using split screen tech to be able to broadcast 2 teams starting in the same dungeon path. Using GWSCR restricted rule-set. and yes once the teams are in place a “gambit” is thrown in. You will have a set amount of time to adjust strategy as needed and then the timer starts. First Team to complete the run wins the match.
Entry is open to any and all participants with the only caveat being that someone on the team needs to have the stream running.
tournament format will be a Double elimination styled tourney. Winning your match will advance you to the next round. losing will move you to the secondary bracket. Losing your match a second time eliminates you from the tournament.
Opening round is Ascalonian catacombs path 1. (its the one with the least time gate i think)
round 2 is a path in caudecus manor. ( path is up for debate)
round 3 twilight Arbor Forward path.
Round 4 Sorrows Embrace Path 3.
Round 5 Honor of the waves Path 1.
Round 6 Citadel of Flame Path 3
round 7 Crucible of Eternity path 3
Round 8 Arah Path 3
Final round for the championship should be Arah 4
this format can allow for a fair number of teams and if we need more room we can add more paths. or less if there is not enough teams. ( at least if we wanted to function it as a double elim kind of thing )
Gambits can include any number of things.
“no Conjures.”
" “x” class not allowed. "
“no two handed weapons”
“ONLY two handed weapons”
“only ranged weapons.”
“no elite skills”
I am sure we could come up with some pretty strange stuff.
the nice thing about a format like this would be that you are only against the team across your screen. and they have the same restrictions etc. So even if team number 1 gets a slower time than team number 8 it would not matter. you only have to compete against the team across from you.
specifics i am sure we could play around with. And in truth I am hard pressed to say that Arena Net will officially endorse this any time soon. That being said. it should not stop us from perhaps pooling our resources and making it happen on our own. The hard part would be getting the word out to everyone. Not just the dungeon forum regulars. or even the forum as a whole regulars. But I would highly suggest and endorse getting it out to the game as a whole.
random thoughts are random.
Random thoughts are … copy paste of what I wrote just a few messages earlier
I don’t see how blowing of your legs by restrictions makes the run any more “challenging”. If it’s about speed, why would you try to set up semi records that any party not suffering under those conditions can easily break?
It would probably grant us some more viewers, though.
But I must also say that I’m realistic. Priorities of anet are ‘esports’, giving legendaries to pvp’ers, giving precursors to spectators and ignoring dungeons. I believe all those things together make it rather clear how their opinion about so called ‘pve endgame’ is. They want challenge to stay in pvp, in a pve game.

It’s not about setting up records, it’s about competing against an other team under unexpected circumstances

Great minds think alike!

I personally think that is kind of what this should be all about.
rather than compare it to say…. a martial arts tourney. ( which would be more akin to PvP )
compare it to… a track race.
But when you get to the starting line with your opponent, they change your car.
:)
When you think about it, since it would be Anet putting it on , what if they made something new to challenge the contestants.
They could make an arena where Teams would face challenges and foes of ever increasing difficulty. The winner is the team that gets the farthest the fastest, and no revives from defeated. They could tool the enounters so it isn’t a straight kill all the enemies slog.
Alternatively it could be their way of introducing Hardmode dungeons and make the challenge, see how many dungeons can you complete without wiping.
You guys have high hopes, I don’t think Anet would ever participate in something like this, let alone make new content just for it.
1. not ESPORTS
2. requires new content/effort
3. dungeon related
??
I didn’t think we were asking for new content… just a dev post in a thread.

I mean when we do the full tournament. Like when we blow it’s popularity up and out of proportion. Lol
Let’s win reddit for it!
Just got to rename it, dungeon should be replaced with quaggan.
Haha. Reddit hates me. And my contest. And my asking for more attention to the dungeons. Apparently according to one dumb kitty we get tons of attention. I called them names and explained why they’re wrong. So there goes all my points. Down down down.
Would be easy and fun to design a tournement.
You’ve to subscribe a non convertible team in which it isn’t allowed to switch the classes during the tournement. So if you start with 5 Elementelists you have to run this setup during the whole tournement.
In every chapter (semi finals , finals) every group have to run the same 3 different dungeon pathes. The fastest group will qualify for the next turn.
On the other hand, it seems much more boring than ToL. This PvP-tournement was just awesome – Really skilled Players, Shoutcasters – a stream with more than 1000 live viewers….I just don’t think that it’ll be possible to realize a Pve-tournement which is that awesome with so many viewers etc.
There are just to less people who interest oneself in PvE records
But I like the idea,though

There’s your problem. You’re not thinking outside the box enough. We are not going to have it be cookie cutter like you recommend. Read the thread and get educated.
I read every single post. What’s your problem that I gave my thoughts to it?
I announced my idea to realize a tournement like ToL in PvE style and elucidated my concerns about it. If you’ll reach anet with that idea it needs something sepcial to get the courtesy – lot of viewers – shoutcasters etc. And that’s my worry I sated out. That it’ll be to less interesting

You didn’t read the part that discussed adding surprise restrictions and having the teams deal with them on the fly. It’s about more than just speed. It’s versatility and skill and communication. You do not know what we are trying to figure out here. You offered the basic suggestion “who is faster at x dungeon” without adding anything and said that the idea wasn’t good because ToL is this and that." Just please go away I’m fed up with all of you kitties not understanding words.
Taking what some others have said.
Dungeon tour, once dead, you’re dead. Team that gets the furthest wins, faster wins if multiple teams get through everything.
That means if you start with AC, and decide to corner the SQ and you eat an AE, you’re done for the rest of the tour!
GW2 hardcore mode
That’s a good idea Jerus. Could also be… if anyone dies it’s over. So you would have to pay attention to your team and have an insane amount of coordination.
