They don’t specifically say “new dungeons”, but at 5:45 in the video he can summarized as saying “Dungeons are what they are, and they won’t change anytime soon. Outside of small quality of life improvements, we’re leaving dungeons alone.”

Indeed, and from my point of view that simply states that they won’t do anything to the EXISTING dungeons. Most likely due to the fact that they spend loads of time and resources on the Aetherpath which people more or less doesn’t bother doing.

The point still remains that they never actually mentioned anything at all about new dungeons, and as such it is rather silly that people are claiming that they did say that.

I’d say that given the “attention” dungeons have gotten since launch, combined with the statements in that video, it’d be pretty silly to think that they’ve got anything planned.

If you’re just being optimistic/playing devil’s advocate, by all means hold on to your hope if you want to. If you know something that we don’t, tell your ANet contact that they really need to open up and give us a reason to stay.

ArcheAge looks fun, though I don’t expect much from the combat. Free beta keys for this weekend are at mmorpg.com.

Can someone please quote me the exact line that says that there will be no new dungeons?

5:45 has already been mentioned, so I just want to quote it here in case anyone’s not watching the video. “[W]hat you’ve seen from dungeons is … the place that they’re gonna be at for a while, but like I said, … we’re always looking for … smaller changes we can make, little tweaks that we can make to improve quality of life…”

The only part even the most optimistic dungeon runner could read anything into is “a while”—“Hey, maybe that means that after a while, we’ll get a new dungeon!” But imo that’s not just extremely optimistic, it’s delusional.

I agree that there is a good bit they have fallen short on with what they told us they intended during development, but they have also delivered a lot that I enjoy. I, like many other people here, just see so much potential in this game that isn’t being tapped or is being deliberately ignored for almost a sole focus of open world content. A primary focus of open world content is fine with a game like this, expected really, but they are only just now getting to changes in other areas that really should have been done a long time ago.

but they are only just now getting to changes in other areas that really should have been done a long time ago.

Yes, but I also think the bigger problem is that the other areas don’t need changes; they need additions. But they don’t have the resources to spend on those additions. And now, even though they’re finally trying to add new, permanent content, they’re insisting on it all being living world stuff.

Every single dungeon/raid designed in any MMORPG can be speedrun, it’s the natural evolution of content when available to a player base for a long time. People simply become better at it and find ways to get their rewards quicker, it was a thing in GW1 and it is a thing in GW2 and in every freaking MMORPG to ever exist.
Concerning the popularity of dungeons, I see a lot more activity in LFG’s dungeon category as of now than 3 months ago so I’d say dungeons are definitely gaining popularity among the general community.
The fact that they blatantly came out and said ‘Okay, we have no plans to develop anything related to dungeons, perhaps a new fractal of 2 because that’s much easier to design but that’s it’ simply means they’re following the money.
If you want to get some sort of protest going we’ll have to boycott gem sales, good luck thinking of a way to convince a large enough chunk of the casuals to stop buying gems to get their new mini pet everytime a new one is released though

It saddens me deeply to see this brilliant combat system gone to waste due to poor management and development, just let go of the eSports fantasy already community organized PvE events have garnered more attention than the freaking PvP events even when it was merely a Fiery Rush parade after September 9th it will be so much more interesting to watch that I can see the popularity going up once again.

Slightly misleading op. But you can tell that they have no plans for anything anytime soon. They said dungeons will be left as they are for a while. So its fairly safe to assume they wont be adding new dungeons even if a Mordrem dungeon would of been the perfect vessel to add one.

But yeah, I think it’s a bad decision to completely forget dungeons. I never really expected new paths/dungeons but improving and reworking current encounters wouldn’t take much work. Honestly I think it would take me max 1 month to improve/rework all dungeon encounters.

Does it mean crucial fights in the story will become a 5 man ‘dungeon’ like Missions in Gw1? Maybe they will leave the classic dungeons the way they are then..

I don’t think so. We had that in LS S1 and if I remember correctly they were not that popular with the LS target clientele.
There were a lot of complaints about them being too hard.
Although that might have been due to the fact that they were temporary content only and included the Molten Duo and Mai Trin, which broke the back of many pugs.

But since we geht the too hard complaints about the final fights in The Dragon’s Reach, part 1 and 2 as well, I would expect the complaints to rise even more because now you cannot do it alone anymore.
Or something like that. Just look how many complaints are out there that they dared to put the final personal story chapter in a dungeon. (Which frankly put only shows that people forget they play an MMO and not a single player game.)

So I wouldn’t expect that.

If you happen to stumble across any typos,
you may keep them to rear new and interesting variants in your basement.

Can someone please quote me the exact line that says that there will be no new dungeons?
Based on what I heard (and understood) they talk about changing stuffs on EXISTING dungeons. But as far as I heard there is not even a mentioning of NEW dungeons. So would love for someone to quote the exact line.

Exact Quote (minus a few ‘ums" and “uhs”):
“So Hardmode is definitely something we’re going to stay away from at this point. That being said, we’ve tossed around a lot of ideas for ways that we can improve the longevity of dungeons without doing major works like, the Twilight Arbor rework was a pretty serious amount of work, and that’s not something we necessarily want to commit to at this point for other dungeons. But that being said, Fractals are a really flexible system that allows us to hopefully add kind of smaller chunks of content without the entire amount of work it takes to redo a dungeon.

Hardmode, like I said, is not really something that we’re interested in, but at the same time you can look at some of the things that we’ve done with the Living World achievements in Season 2 where we have these kind of like ‘hey, do this crazy thing.’ That’s an avenue that’s at least open, I wouldn’t say that we’re currently building anything like that but we have that framework in place and it’s something that’s easy to understand.

Dungeons are an area that we’re always kind of… we feel like we want to make smaller changes to dungeons rather than larger ones, it’s an area that has a very kind of dedicated play group, but at the same time we’re looking at extending the life of all the areas of the game so it’s… we can only focus on so many things at once.

Right now, you know, what you’ve seen from dungeons is kind of the place that they’re gonna be at for a while, but like I said, there’s always… We’re always looking for kind of smaller changes that we can make, little tweaks that we can make to improve quality of life and that kind of thing in dungeons, so you may see some changes of that sort coming out in the near future as well."

It is also worth mentioning (even though the interviewer can’t be bothered to ask) that this interview is with Matt Wuerffel (head of the End Game Systems team, on the right) and Devon Carver (head of World versus World design team, on the left). Obviously we don’t know the exact organization of ArenaNet, but it stands to reason that the “WvW guy” wouldn’t be the person to ask about dungeons in the same way the screenwriter wouldn’t be the guy to ask about a film’s editing or photography. I can’t say what exact role Mr. Wuerffel has, obviously, but since he doesn’t provide any input he either doesn’t know or doesn’t wish to say.

Entirely disappointing.

A few thoughts:

1. Let’s examine the monetization aspect. The argument runs something like this: if dungeons don’t make ANET money, they won’t spend time developing them.

It’s a pretty good argument, and it seems the living world casuals who like to spam talk with 100 people at a party three times/character buy enough crap from the gem store to keep that content at the forefront.

What I don’t understand is the PvP focus though. I mean, besides some finishers, what content are the PvPers buying that makes that game mode worth $150k tournaments? I mean the dungeon tournament DnT held had more viewership than many of the PvP tournaments.

Lastly, I had really hoped GW2 was going to go the expansion route, and that this new map couldn’t possibly be the only thing the team was seriously working on. Again though, the GW1 model must not have been as profitable as the gem store model. It’s a shame really. At least from a pure numbers game, I’ve purchased the box and maybe $10 in gems (can’t remember if I bought my riding broom with real money or with gold) since launch. In the first two years of GW1 I had bought what, the original game and all three expansions? So nearly 4x the amount of money that I’ve spent on this game. I think it’s a shame that my play style, and presumable OUR play style, is in the minority.

2. Dungeon content is better because it makes me actually think, at least relative to living world or open world content. The zerg event focus of open world is mind numbingly boring. The open world farming meta of spam staff guardian 1 is mind numbingly boring. The living world content is interesting MAYBE the first time through but has little replayability in my eyes. The reason I prefer dungeons is that each player matters, and it requires an effort of coordination amongst group members to complete. Hard coordination? No, definitely not. But some is required to make things run smoothly, and that something is better than none. The great jungle wurms and Teq are probably the open world exceptions to this rule, and I think they’d make great instanced content, but what makes them a drag in my mind is the huge ramp up of AFK time necessary to get into a decent map. Who wants to AFK for longer than the duration of the fight just to participate?

3. Given the above, I am going to enter my second hiatus. Not that anyone cares, but I simply don’t have a desire to play right now, and I won’t be back until something else piques my interest. To those of you I’ve pugged and grouped with over the last few years, thanks for the fun and I hope I see you in game somewhere down the road. For now, adieu.

P.S I will probably still forum lurk, because I enjoy seeing all of your shenanigans.

This is simply put, a huge shame. Living Story is nice, but honestly, it’s inferior to things like new zones and such. Living Story has fairly little replay value, but an entire new dungeon? That’s something that’d see the light of day way more often. Plus, with Maguuma being delved into, it’s the PERFECT time to put a new dungeon into the game.

(On another note, I don’t play the game for LS, and would honestly not mind it getting scrapped after season 2 for more dungeons/SAB at all.)

Yes, totally forgot how much viewers we got for the tournament, almost 2k at peak, now tell me that ArenaNet don’t want to invest in a mode that doesn’t attract people. If we got 2k viewers for an unofficial tournament, the dungeon crowd is definitely there. The only reason we won’t get anything is because it doesn’t create any income for them.

Something that baffles me is that they refuse to acknowledge the issues that made TA Aetherpath so infrequently run. They don’t acknowledge the slime and fire part as being supremely irritating – especially when the majority of skills cleave/bounce/arc/pierce. They don’t acknowledge that it’s now completely out of place. They don’t acknowledge that it takes too much time and effort versus the reward you get and they don’t acknowledge that the achievements just don’t reward enough points for it to be worth doing them.

I would much rather have them revamp the way champion combat works and then add additional achievements to encourage replay, e.g. a daily achievement to speed-run a dungeon, a monthly achievement to do a boss in x way, adding a gambit system, etc. Make them worth more APs and let the community have at ‘em. They could also add weapon skin recolours for doing the meta per character. I don’t think we need new dungeons really – it only spreads the community further apart.

Anet made me hate everything that i love in a MMO:

  • Farming achievements
  • Doing hard content(which is almost non-existent here)
  • PvP
  • Farming materials
  • Crafting
  • the only good thing in this game is WvW but the updates are so rare that it just lame

Now i’m looking for something else.I may try Rift or Wildstar. Both have good reviews on the dificulty curve.

“Twilight Arbor rework was a pretty serious amount of work” , really? All previously designed assets, the engine they are using, which supports fly through camera shots, voice overs, animations. I don’t even remember if there are custom made animation between characters (each other) and the environments in Aetherpath. But even so, that should not justify the amount of work to be “serious”. Considering that every living story release has had more than one cutscene worked on per release. Okay, so you say, they spent time balancing, and fixing mechanics? No, there’s no new mechanics in Aetherpath. Most of the tricks we’ve seen and exist in the parts of the world and is just put together differently.

You can argue that LS is the “thing” now a days and people wants to play LS. But what else is there to do other than LS in this game? right, there’s nothing. The players got no choice at this point to either play LS, or farm farm farm.

I do agree with one of the earlier thread post. We as a community, need to do something about the lack of dungeon features.

on the same note, [DnT] hosting these dungeon competitions also will help. Every sucessful event we have will force dungeon into the spotlight. This will be a great topic for commentators to discuss during commentating downtime for the tourney.

I know these 2 guys probably weren’t in the best place to answer, but the fact that they didn’t even bother saying “it’s definitely something we talk about” tells us that dungeons aren’t and will not be something Anet care about.

We, as a community, better do something, I don’t know what, I don’t know how but something must be done. Over the past 2 days we have seen Dev/Community manager post everywhere on the forum, except the dungeon subforum

We might not represent the biggest part of GW2, but I’m pretty sure it’s due to Anet ignoring this aspect of the game rather than the player’s interest. For casual players, farming open world event is more rewarding than dungeons, so they might run them once and never set a foot in there again because it wouldn’t be worth it.

Dungeon have their place in MMO and ignoring that is a big mistake, for many of us dungeon has been the competitive scene in MMO, pvp is fun and everything but was first introduce in MMO as a side game for fun. I wish I could feel the thrill of getting a world raid first like in world of warcraft, nothing come close to it in gw2. If it wasn’t for the fluid combat system I’m pretty sure most of us, “elitist” would have left a while ago.

The only way for us to be heard by the devs is by switching off and playing other games. They won’t listen to anything else, as with us still logging in, the game is still running successfully.

Nothing about new dungeons was mentioned. He types precisely what I took away from the interview, in it’s context (which I feel is being largely ignored), that building a new path in an existing dungeon takes more work. Whereas in Fractals, you can just build whatever you want. This was a neat way to dodge and dance around mentioning new dungeons.

In summation, it sounds like they’ll create new dungeons that won’t be approached in the same manner as existing dungeons.

Just put a kitten team on dungeon development. 2 years without any dungeons, this is nonsense. All we had is a replacement for TA F/U, which is fact not even a replacement because at least TA F/U was profitable compared to this aetherpath time gated madness.

I’m sick of their bullkitten. I’m sick of them.
I really hope I’ll soon find another mmo.
Biggest disappointment in all these years of playing videogames.

I’m pretty sure the DnT tournament peaked at 1.4k viewers.

Well… time to not just “not-log-in-anymore”, but uninstall the game.

I’ve had the feeling that anet isn’t really caring about the dungeon community and actually trying to get rid of them, this is just another example of their hatred towards us.

Fractal reset, tafu, simin, zerker nerfs, trait nerfs, reflection nerfs, odd balance patches, nerfing around issues, the list goes on.

Many of us put up with these blatant flaws, but finally the glimmer of hope, that anet would eventually change their attitude towards the game, admit that not everything is allright, start adding more frequent and major patches, was extinct with this interview.

We can finally move on, towards better games, because this game is doomed to have “quality of life fixes” without any major adjustments to pve or pvp alike. No regrets.

Towards the people I’ve played with: Thank you for the fun we’ve had. It was a pleasure being in rT, aswell as playing with other highly skilled people. I may’ve been able to bridge gaps in between the releases of new content by setting up challenges for myself, but I can’t bridge a gap with no end. This was my last post in this forum too, Agony out

RIP game 2012-2014

If they’re really not going to bother with dungeon content then they should atleast up the rewards. Same goes for fractals.

Nooo, then there would be INFLATION, you know? The evil elitists would get more money and would be able to bully the pure little casuals and the sweet new players that need to be protected and nurtured and encouraged!
Aren’t you selfish, man. Why don’t you want an even playing field for everyone? They might get confused if they increase rewards! And we don’t want those sweethearts to pay more for t6 because of you inflating the economy with the gold you got exploiting dungeons, right?
Right?

My Archeage IGN is “Purplemiku,” Nova. I didn’t think to check twitch inbox but check it again.

I’m also on the server Aranzeb. It’s super high population though ;_; do you know if you’re able to transfer a character to another server?

I think you can, Jeremy transferred to my server, I’ll ask him how he did it.

Oh and it’s open world PvP, there are no special PvP zones, anyone from another faction can attack you at any time (except in special safe zones around respawn points and some other locations).

I’d like to clarify a few points.

The Competitive Team is responsible for all more-advanced content in the game. This includes: PvP, WvW, and profession skill balance/game balance in general. This is a pretty big group of areas of responsibility, as you can see. The team’s resources are spoken for in areas that will have impact on the most amount of players, or on changes that are less of impact to them, resource-wise (smaller projects/changes). As such, we have no immediate plans to revamp dungeons due to this resource constraint. That’s not to say that the team will never have time, in the future, to do large projects like the TA Aetherpath or similar with other dungeons. As Mike O’Brien said in his recent post, if we ever permanently stop working on a particular area of the game, we will tell you all.

Your feedback from this sub-forum has been reaching the team. As you recall, CC Danicia was active here in the past and delivered that feedback to developers. We will continue monitoring your feedback here and responding as we can.

Something that would help is if you could gather a thread for each dungeon (perhaps you’ve all already created one per dungeon?), and list out the major changes that you feel the dungeons would need to make them better, in concise bullet points. That way it’s easier for us to provide them to the development team.

What are we working on right now? Feature Pack 2 (in ~two more weeks), Season 2 of the Living World (coming back this fall), the WvW Fall Tournament, and the World Tournament Series PvP global tournament are just some of the things we are currently working on that we can tell you about right now.

Thanks for posting.

Here’s the reality for most people in these forums.

This game, over the last 2 years, has not made PvE group content a priority.

You’ve added a TA path, removed a TA path, and added fractals. For better or worse, that’s the reality. You ignored this forum for the better part of last year, your dungeon team was booted (RIP Robert) and your focus has been on other aspects of the game.

That’s fine, it’s just some of us were hoping that the pendulum would eventually swing back our way. When it did, the result was the Fractured patch.

I came from GW1, and over 2 years in that game every single map, dungeon, mission was group oriented. I was hoping for more of that. I understand GW2 is a different game, and open world/living story solo content has become your focus. Again, that’s fine, but it’s just not what I’m looking for in a game. I appreciate the honesty those two developers in the YouTube video provided.

If and when your company decides to focus on organized group content, I will be back in a heartbeat. As I said, I’ll keep checking in for updates.

Edit: And before I get the “TEQ AND WURM!!!” response, let me say that those are wonderfully designed encounters that were ruined by having to AFK for long periods to get into an open map. Instances are advantageous for organized group content, because they avoid the chaos and disorganization that arises when you play with tons of people who you don’t know, who you can’t communicate effectively with, and who may not share the same objectives/goals that you have.

Sorry, but my hope is gone.

I see a lot of PR in there, as always, and more tasks to keep us occupied, as to make us think that they’re interested in making changes. I’ll let the deluded, optimistic people do it.
In the meantime, I’ll contemplate my intense disappointment…. I’ve been a loyalist of the gw franchise for over 8 years. My faith has been unfaltering ’til one year ago.
Owell.
I can still rerun the same, boring dungeons for a few months before I get completely burnt out. Just for the sake of friends.
